My friend has Ubuntu on his computer and he told me that one day when he turned It on all the text and Images on his computer are small. This even happens when he opens the Internet, not just on his desktop. Could this be an Ubuntu problem or could there be a setting that was accidentally switched?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using Crunchbang for a little while, and I've started to notice that I'm actually having to squint to see the text on every site (as well as the text used in the menus). What's weird is that these same sites look great in Ubuntu (I can actually see them and what not), but for whatever reason all of the text is blurry in crunchbang.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new laptop with 1920x1080 resolution. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 via "wubi" just now, however everything in ubuntu is too small to keep my eye comfortable. I searched the web and forum and tried to enlarge those, but the solution was about Ubuntu front and folder icon only (change in "appreance", and "edit->preference"). The front and icon are still small in other applications, such as Google chrome, firefox. Note: the change of front size in chrome and firefox only changes those on the page, but not page background, not the size in tab and anything else.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am looking for an editor to fill a specific request for a mostly non-computer person. He uses a computer to write manuals and other books for classes he teaches. He has come to ubuntu so he can more easily access updates, gimp, etc. than he felt he could in Windows.
1) I need a text editor that can be kept open without bogging things down, or can be loaded fast enough to make him think it is "TSR" (made usable in either case by a keypress on his MS internet antique keyboard)
2) Spell check as you type with editable dictionary (he can add words that will no longer show as incorrect). Ability to select spelling suggestions easily (left click a misspelled word is his current method).
3) Ability to highlight words that most of us would call syntax highlighting but for words having NOTHING to do with a programming language etc. I would call it ability to edit the keyword file(s) to make his own languages to be highlighted.
Already rejected:
* anything with millions of complex keys to @#%$^%#$ remember that don't make sense
* gedit
* geany
* kate
* openoffice
* treeline (though he does use it for other things)
* tomboy (the cuss words there are an art form)
* anything emacs/vi or similar (see #1 reject reason at top)

I'm looking for a programmable way to open an editor with a small window size. For example 60 columns and 3 lines. So I need an editor that can take its initial window size from command line args or environment variables, or possibly from an initial command that can be given on the command line.I've looked at documentation and experimented with gedit, gvim (and vi & vim), and nano and I don't think any of them can be controlled this way. Vi and its friends have a "window" option and also a "resize" command, both of which are described as setting the number of rows, but they don't change the graphical window size they just change the number of rows displayed in the window.

Is there simple way to change to 25x80 or something with greater letters. I don't have GDI.Someone sad to me to do:sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setupand it's does the job but when I restart system it's gone.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using a 17" VGA monitor with 1024x768 resolution. With some tweaking, I'm pretty satisfied with GNOME Shell and its look. The only exception is the font of the text below the icons in Activities. On my monitor with this resolution, the text is just too small. As far as I know, it's the smallest text anywhere in the GUI. This is kind of an accessibility issue for me, since I do have a sight problem
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Suse 11.2 on my computer... i have 42" screen threw my HDMI output at 1360x768. now.. when i booted it up the first time.. .the text on everything was so small i could hardly read it... so i went and adjusted it threw my System settings by clicking on "Configure Desktop" changed everything to "Sans Serif 15"... BUT.... everything in YAST all the text is NOT readable... ANY ONE KNOW how to fix that..everything BUT yast is just fine...

I am running at a humble 1024x768 resolution, but I can barely read the text in many applications and on the desktop itself. Some programs are better than others, but for example, Icedove/Tbird's text is extremely small.

I'm sure this topic has been covered plenty of times, but I'm new to setting up X/Window Manager/Desktop on Debian, and am not sure how to proceed. I've been using Linux for a couple of years but am relatively new to Debian (I started on Ubuntu - hence the being stumped by something like this).
I'm trying to setup MythTV, but whenever I do so, I get no text on the X window setup screen. The language selection takes a very long time (input is super delayed) and I don't see anything on the screen. This last time I ran it it went the farthest it has gone before, but it always hangs at the theme file selection, as shown by this Terminal output.

THIS NEVER HAPPENED WHILE RUNNING WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS XP. First icons will disapear and text will not work, images wont be there, system dock and explorer will just not work, the start menu will have nothing in it, and when i restart it, (manual) it will boot and show me specs and say "NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND" and when i go into BIOS it says IDE0:_______ not the hard drive name and size like it usually does.
What I want to do is have two different networks connected with my switch. I want one computer to be the server and run dhcp with the ip address 10.3.2.1 and I want the other client machine to be 10.1.X.X. I want the X.X to be assigned automatically from DHCP running on the server. The subnet mask I believe should 255.255.255.0 for both networks. How can I get these two different networks to talk to each other when they are on completely different networks??

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.
After installing ubuntu 64 bit, I installed all my updates and installed the current nvidia driver for my 9800 GTX+ from the additional drivers page. After restarting my computer, ubuntu boots into text mode. I used google and found out a couple of commands like:
After i hit control+alt+f7 it hangs on checking battery state with NO ok to the right of it. after running sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia -current and restarting the computer, the boot hangs on the ubuntu screen everytime.

4 GB of ram

I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:
convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.
I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others.And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist?It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI used Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and built a Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit VM using VMWare player.It's great, except it keeps reverting to a USA keyboard after each reboot.The host OS doesn't do this.The host was installed normally, but the guest was installed via the VMWare easy install thing which does everything for you.I've already set the location back to London, and I've added a UK keyboard to it, but still this odd reversion.I've googled and found other people reporting it but don't see any resolution.
View 2 Replies View RelatedNo matter what I try, notifications do not appear. The notify-osd program is running (if I check ps) and nothing ever reports an error. I just don't see it, or hear it (does it make a sound?)
I think this might be because of my dual screen setup. I have two screens set up, with the screen on the right lower than the screen on the left so that they match up in real life.
This leaves a dead space above the right hand screen, perhaps its appearing in there? But I have already used notification-preferences to move it to the left (does that even work?) and still nothing. What's up? I rely on notifications to tell me that something's up, since the new "notification area" plugin does not flash and is thus utterly useless on this large screen display (design failure)
This issue has plagued ubuntu 10.04 on all my installations, PC and laptop, and is an infrequent annoyance that needs to be resolved. Basically, after boot up, i'll bring up a gnome window and the title bar will not be there. This means I can't click and drag windows easily, and do other things the title bar lets you do. Is there an easy fix to this that i'm not locating? Also i've tried restarting my X session, by logging out, and the problem persists until I restart the system. And even then the title bar may not load.

I've also run rpcinfo on the ASUS system but with the IP address of Compaq, getting the same results. Which is good right?
I can ping back and forth. I've successfully run SSH on the ASUS machine from the Compaq machine. I'm not sure what to do now. Could this be a permissions issue? I'm using the fist user on each system.
