I've been searching and searching, trying to find a way to remove the little arrow next to the gnome main menu icon.Found a way by editing gnome-panel/panel-menu-button.c <--- however I cannot locate this in Fedora 12... help me out here, this has been nagging me for quite some time now.
View 7 RepliesI've just read this thread: [URL] and the information it seems is a bit out of date and a risk to use. I felt more comfortable with the .gtkrc-2.0 file suggested a few posts in, but it doesn't work, in that it turns the panel to the Raleigh-themed one which we always get when there's some kind of error in a gtkrc file, as those of us that have dabbled in theming will know.
It's comical that this minor but unnecessary eyesore goes back so far and hasn't been dealt with, but is there any new info about this, a new method, for 10.10? I don't want to be doing compiling or to risk messing things up, as has been caused by the directions in the other thread, because I've been experimenting with different distros for two years, just bought a new hard drive, and have settled now.
Maybe someone here knows why the .gtkrc-2.0 file hasn't worked for me? I twigged that the panel (though not the rest of the theme, i.e. in program windows) had turned to Raleigh because of those ugly handles pertaining to the Window List panel applet and the one to the left of the notification area. I used the exact file in that other thread, I tried logging out and in and then rebooting, and I even tried pasting the file's contents into the gtkrc file of the theme I use. If you need to know, I'm using the 'Lush' Metacity window border and the 'Redmond' engine.

I am using Fedora 15 Live CD and after I did Yum update there are 2 icons of google chrome showing in the applications menu and also there are few other icons I want to remove, is there a way to do that, I searched in system settings but there was nothing there?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter much Google-ing and headaches I finally found out how to change the Gnome Menu Icon in F10. I love the Echo Icon theme, but I hate that Pac Man main menu icon. I had to get rid of it. Here's how to change that icon--and even to replace the standard "Infinity" icon with a much nicer version--or even switch that out for something totally different.
First, enable GUI root logon. This makes copying/pasting the icon to the protected icon folder much easier. Here's how [URL]When you have completed that, log out. When you get to the GDM login choose "Other" enter "root" in Username and then your root password. Now you're logged in as root.
Go to USR/Share/Pixmaps and there are a few nice Fedora icons. There's the "Infinity" logo but it's a much nicer, shinier version of the standard one. It's called "fedora-logo-sprite". But if you're feeling adventurous then try--as I did--"fedora-logo-small", which is the fedora name and a small "Infinity" logo (there's also the "Powered by Fedora" icon too). Copy one of those and paste it to Home or Desktop, or wherever you want. You just want to put it somewhere to stage. Now change the name to "start-here".
Now go to /USR/Share/Icons/(name of icon set using)/24x24/places/ and remove the "start-here" icon (send to Trash). Go to where you staged your replacement icon, copy it, go back to the /USR/Share/Icons/(icon set used)/24x24/places/ folder and paste it. Be sure to empty the Trash Can before you log off as Root User. Log off/ log back on as "you" and the icon should appear. I used the "Fedora (Infinity)" logo as Main Menu instead of the Menu Bar and it works great. The "Powered by Fedora" icon would look great too.

The Gnome desktop environment in Fedora permits a range of themes to be used, including icon sets. Some themes will include an icon for the Gnome Main Menu that you may or may not like including the default Fedora "infinity" Main Menu icon.Most launchers, whether on the desktop or on a Gnome panel, will permit you to change the individual icon. The Gnome Main Menu offers no such facility. Whereas there have been several challenging methods suggested to change that icon on a system-wide basis, there is an easy and straightforward way to do it on a user account basis.

I switched from 11.2 to 11.4 yesterday. I noticed that the Appearance dialog has only three tabs instead of four tabs. The last tab "Interfaces" does not exist, in where I can select "Show Icon in Context Menu". But I do not know, how to show icons in context menu.

I finally figured out that a .desktop file needed to be made in /usr/share/applications, but I can't get the icon to show up. For the "Icon" field in the .desktop file,tried giving an absolute path to an icon in my home folder, and I also tried putting the icon in all the folders under /usr/share/icons and just putting "eclipse" (the icon file name) as the valueI had copied this last from some of the existing .desktop files that worked, but still had no luck. Does anyone know how to do this?

My question is how do I remove the home directory and the trash icon from the desktop? Or better said what is the path to removing the symbolic link, I cannot find the symbolic links in the desktop directory. It is empty, I do not see any symbolic links under /home/test/Desktop?

I don't like the black arrow on the Main Menu so I followed the instructions to get rid of it posted hereI got to the part where I type "sudo make" However, I get the exact error posted hereI tried to follow the solution, I installed libpanel-applet2-dev using synaptic. I tried to edit the "Makefile" in the directory /var/cache/apt-build/build/gnome-panel-2.30.2. So I take the liberty to post this in a new thread: I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop in dual boot configuration (other OS is WinXP). grub starts and I can hit enter to boot Ubuntu. However as soon as I use an arrow key to move downwards in the menu, grub hangs. In this condition I cannot boot any other OS, not even the "safe" version of Ubuntu.
Any idea what is the cause of this? It is a fresh installation and I read in the other thread that reinstalling grub or re-running grub-update had no positive effect. Does anone know how I can install grub 0.97 ? Where do I find it?
has anyone tried to notice the small down arrow thats displayed below ? wonder if there is a way to make that arrow disappear

I am running Debian Lenny with Gnome and Metacity, and I've just installed the fglrx driver for my ATI card. I am running at a humble 1024x768 resolution, but I can barely read the text in many applications and on the desktop itself. Some programs are better than others, but for example, Icedove/Tbird's text is extremely small.

I'm sure this topic has been covered plenty of times, but I'm new to setting up X/Window Manager/Desktop on Debian, and am not sure how to proceed. I've been using Linux for a couple of years but am relatively new to Debian (I started on Ubuntu - hence the being stumped by something like this).
My problem is the links that are in the places menu in the gnome panal, all link to the appearances preferances. I'm running Fedora 14 with Gnome.

About my system - Opensuse 11.1 KDE 4.2
I just bought a new laptop with 1920x1080 resolution. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 via "wubi" just now, however everything in ubuntu is too small to keep my eye comfortable. I searched the web and forum and tried to enlarge those, but the solution was about Ubuntu front and folder icon only (change in "appreance", and "edit->preference"). The front and icon are still small in other applications, such as Google chrome, firefox. Note: the change of front size in chrome and firefox only changes those on the page, but not page background, not the size in tab and anything else.

The only exception is the font of the text below the icons in Activities. On my monitor with this resolution, the text is just too small. As far as I know, it's the smallest text anywhere in the GUI. This is kind of an accessibility issue for me, since I do have a sight problem

Some one had told me that it would be there on the following directory.
/usr/share/icons/balanzan/scalable/apps and select firefox.png.
But I couldn't find it there.
There was no balanzan folder inside icons. I could find scalable folder inside default.kde4 folder.
/usr/share/icons/default.kde4/scalable/apps/
But there no firefox.png.
Is anyone else seeing the default icon in GNOME Shell instead of the usual Firefox icon? I am talking about the default icon that looks like a purple diamond.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhile I can find my way around most things, terminals and desktop managers are different than I remember. One of the biggest problems that I am encountering today is that when running a gnome terminal (this is Suse 10.0 enterprise), I'm getting behavior in the window that I don't want. Specifically, when I type, my typing is underlined as if something is trying to spell check my window. Further, it seems as if when running vi or less, my keystrokes are only processed by these apps when I hit 'return'. I.e. if I'm running less and want to go back a page, I'll hit b, but nothing happens until I hit 'return'.
I seem to have tracked this down to the 'input method". Right clicking in the Gnome terminal allows me to set my input method to one of a dozen values. It seems that currently, it's set to "SCIM Input Method". If I then select 'default' or 'X Input Method', apps (i.e. things like less, vi, and even the bash shell) behave as I would expect.
a) what is this SCIM input method
b) how can I make it so that it is not the default?
I've poked around various configuration files in my home directory as well as in /etc, but I can't see to find how this is set.
