Ubuntu :: Using Udev To Mount USB Storage In Home?

Apr 1, 2010

I would like to have my USB stoage devices to be mounted under my $HOME automatically when I insert them. Those devices have been partitioned, formated with XFS and also given a UUID for this purpose. I think I should use udev's rules and have also done some attempts like this one:

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="c195a25a-c03e-4cd8-9d86-9b9219acfeb4", OWNER="uqbar", GROUP="uqbar", RUN+="/bin/mount /dev/%k /home/uqbar/work"

Of course it doesn't work. I'm running Kubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu 9.04 and would prefer a solution not tied to a specific desktop.

Ubuntu Servers :: Unable To Mount New Storage / Enable This?

Aug 24, 2011

My 11.04 installation is running beautifully in VM on ESXi. I'm trying to add storage so I added the disks, assigned them in vmware to the vm, then tried to mount them when I received the error code...

my setup:
HP Microserver, booting vmware from USB drive. Hardware RAID card (Adaptec RAID 2405), 2 x 250GB HDD in RAID1 (datastore1) with VM's, 2 x 2TB HDD in RAID1 (datastore2) - the storage I'm trying to add.

A search of the above errors yielded many results, all of them were different scenarios to mine.

Fedora Hardware :: USB Storage Devices Slow To Mount

Jun 22, 2011

Using Fedora 15 64 bit. The problem is when I put in a USB stick (directly into USB port front or back), or SD memory card via Card reader, they take a long time to auto mount. About 30 seconds. I've tried a few different USB sticks and memory cards. Once mounted they work fine. This is a new install, been running for a few weeks, but the problem only seems to have started in the last few days. Also, not sure if it's related, but now Shotwell takes about 30 seconds to start. The screen comes up, but the interface in non responsive for around 30 seconds. Both USB and Shotwell problems seem to have started at the same time.

Recently I upgraded from my long outdated Kubuntu 6.06 dapper installation to the new LTS, 8.04 hardy. Ever since everything has been working smoothly and going well, but there's one problem: I can't mount either my external USB HDD or my SD card in my USB card reader. When I try to mount either in Konqueror (Media:/) by right clicking on the device and clicking Mount I get this:Code:mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program, or other errorIn some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or soI also get this in the console:Code:mattmodica@Dothan:/media$ sudo mount sda1[mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstabmount: can't find sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtabmattmodica@Dothan:/media$The first method I tried (doing it in Konqueror) worked in dapper 6.06 just fine.If I run dmesg | tail in console I get this:

Debian Multimedia :: Mount Android Mass Storage Device In Thunar

Apr 12, 2016

Since I use openbox with some packages from Xfce4 (mainly for convenience) I get most stuff "for free" as it were when using openbox, but I can't figure out how to mount android devices in a simple way. I can either do it manually, or install some other file manager that has this capability. This leads me to my question, I've noticed that if I install Nautilus, which automatically mounts android devices OotB, I get this functionality in Thunar as well. This leads me to believe that there is clearly a dependency package of some kind installed when running apt-get install nautilus that enables it, It'd be great to get this functionality in Thunar without having all the nautilus packages just littering about for no good reason. the required package is gvfs-backends, which I should have realized when I was unable to browse smb:// addresses. You forget a lot when you only make a fresh install once every 2 years or so.

Ubuntu :: Migrating All FS To New Storage?

Aug 15, 2010

I'm in the process of duplicating all the data from my existing filesystems to a new storage solution. I know it is not recommended to do so but this will be a *lot* faster then having to reinstall and reconfiguring the system from scratch...I've synchronized the filesystems using rsync, used the following command line for that:

Code:
rsync --recursive --acls --xattrs --delete --force --one-file-system --links --perms --owner --group --stats --specials --devices --human-readable / /mnt/sde1
rsync --recursive --acls --xattrs --delete --force --one-file-system --links --perms --owner --group --stats --specials --devices --[code]....

To make sure all data is mirrored properly, the next step is to boot into a live system and rerun rsync to copy any previously locked/altered files to the new storage. After moving this, I know I have to edit /etc/fstab on the new storage to make it match the proper UID for the drives. I also have to update grub and install grub into MBR of the new storage.

Ubuntu :: NTFS For Data Storage?

Apr 13, 2010

I'm now having to access a lot of data on a portable hard drive on a regular basis. The drive needs to be used with three different Windows systems, three Ubuntu machines and two slackware units. The data is backed up once per week.

I have been using Ext2IFS to access the data (stored on Ext3) from Windows but keep having problems. Obviously Ubuntu and Slack have no trouble reading or writing to the drive. Additionally, some sensitive data will be put onto the drive shortly and I would like to encrypt it.

What is the best solution here? Is NTFS reliable enough and is data access and writing reliable enough from Linux? Can I encrypt NTFS and still leave it accessible by Linux? What is the best software to encrypt the drive with (if I can) that is accessible by both Windows and Linux?

Ubuntu One :: Can't Donwload Music From U1 Storage?

Jun 3, 2010

I am getting seriously pissed off and dissappointed at the way things are handled here i bought some music from rhythmbox and after a long journey in disconnections and reconnections i finally got the files in my U1 storage ( rhythmbox still says "Transfering to ur U1 storage" in mydownloads ) now how am i supposed to download all this files??? i can't download an entire folder in web browser ( i can only do one file at a time ) and i am not able to find another way through rhythmbox or anywhere else after reading one hour of irrelevant tutorials and faqs ( i have a headahe at this time, so even if there was a way i probably would not understand it :D )

is there a way or do i just have to suffer downloading all my files one by one ???? and btw: i had to do all this on a virtual machine becuz noscript got in the way of adding my pc to the account ( w/ allowing all the servers it still blocked something) and rhythmbox crashed somewhere in the process and after restarting my pc, it kept getting stock when pressed the check out button any way that's not important i actually prefer it this way to have one dedicated virtual machine for U1 music

Ubuntu :: New PC Won't Recognize Storage Devices?

Sep 30, 2010

My friend bought a new PC, and he's duel booting Ubuntu 10.04LTS and Windows 7 Ultimate. At first I tried partitioning the hardrive using fdisk in Ubuntu, but it couldn't find hda. After looking in /dev/, there wasn't hda, or any sd* devices. I looked in gparted and used the installer afterwards and both came up with nil. I installed Windows, updated the BIOS using the utility that came with the mobo, and tried seeing if Ubuntu could detect my hardrive and it couldn't. I even turned ACPI off when booting and that didn't work either.

The motherboard is a new Gigabit with 3 PCIe slots and a USB3.0.

Ubuntu :: Multiple Flash Drives For Storage?

Jan 4, 2010

I am running Karmic on a stripped laptop, and running it off a usb thumbdrive. Its purpose is mainly as a slide show/video show inset in a tableI did not really want to go out and buy a HDD, since it does not need to store that much. Then I went to aldi and they had 8gb flash drives for $5, so I got 6. The ultimate question comes down to the best way to make use of them. I ordered a 7 slot USB hum off ebay for cheap, and I was going to go from there. would it be easier/better to just plug them in and make links to them from the normal folders and just operate directly from there, or is there a better option. I guess a usb raid array could be neat

Ubuntu :: How To Destroy 1 Terabyte Worth Of Storage

I've been backing up a lot of my computer data for 2 years now and it has added up to a terabyte, so I went to bestbuy and bought a 1.5 terabyte external hard drive. I went home and I moved all my data on to it.Now it is starting to fail! As soon as I heard clicking noises I copied all the files over back to my original hard drive.

I had alot of personal information on the 1.5 TB hard drive that is failing(it is still working though), and incase when I try to take it back and they restore it, I do not want them looking through my stuff. I have tried the shred command but thats going to take forever just to overwrite one terabyte once. Will a format remove all my personal files from recovery? What are some other things I could try?

That is full so I then added a second drive 500GB, formatted, added to VG and then extended the LV "Storage" with the 500GB partition. Now the LV reads as ~2.2TB which is right. Everything is successful up to this point. Except now when I go to the mounted LV at /storage Ubuntu shows it as full and only as ~1.7TB. The 500GB were never added!
