I am using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, I am big on desktop customization, but the only things I can find online about customizing the theme is using the Ubuntu Themes Manager. I want to create my own theme. When I used IceWM I LOVED theming my windows and taskbar, but the window manager had little capability as far as functionality went.Does anyone know how to customize the desktop theme with a little more than just the themes manager or can someone refer me to a good resource for doing so?

I've just installed Ubuntu v11.04 and Orta theme. The problem is that when I make changes in Orta Settings Manager they have no effect at all, even after I save them and unselect and select Orta Theme in Appearance Preferences. For instance, I never get the dark panel, but only the light one.

How do I rearrange or otherwise customize the desktop menus and icons in the Netbook Remix? For example, I wish to combine the System Tools and System menus, and I want to rearrange the icons in the Favourites menu. There is no Control Panel (that I can find) which will let me do this.

I just upgraded to 11.4 and was surprised to find my desktop completely changed. The main reason I use Ubuntu is because I could customize the desktop environment how I wanted. Now I can't seem to move or adjust anything. Does anyone know how to move the menu and launch bars? The biggest thing I want to do is move the launch bar to the bottom of the screen.

I installed a new, larger hard drive and installed 10.04 with home directory encryption. Then I mounted my old hard drive's home partition to a folder and copied the entire home directory off of it onto my new hard drive like so:
Code:
chaz@brutus:~$ cp -ravv ../mnt/chaz/* ./
This seems to have worked and it looks like all my files are here on my new hard drive. However when I rebooted I expected my old desktop settings to apply, and my firefox to have my bookmarks, history, and add-ons. Apparently it doesn't work like that.
In the past when I reinstalled Ubuntu and kept my old home partition, all my program configs were saved and worked in the new installation, even if I had to install the program first. How can I duplicate that behavior in copying my old home partition to the new hard drive?

Is it possible to install a different theme on each of the multiple virtual desktops? For example, I thought it would be interesting to have the default Ubuntu theme installed on the primary desktop, on the secondary desktop have a Windows 7 theme, on the third desktop have a Mac OSX theme, and perhaps another theme on the fourth.
After looking at sites like these I am interested in finding out if this is possible:

I realize switching between themes may be a tough thing for a computer to do quickly, but if it is possible I'd at least like to try it on my desktop, which has enough processing power to at least make the transition time bearable. Does anyone know if/how I can set virtual desktop specific themes?

I am running 11.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1500 series laptop. I updated my computer yesterday, and now my desktop theme is different. In 10.04, changing the theme was easy, just go to appearance settings and choose. For some reason, when I go to appearance and select a theme now, the only options I get are customize and install, neither of which do anything to help me change my theme. The install button takes me to my home directory...presumably to pick a theme file. But I can't find any themes in my home directory.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Dell XPS Studio 8000 - I find that on occasion the desktop theme seems to change itself. I have selected Clearlooks. The desktop generally looks correct as shown in the first attachment. Then for some unknown reason the desktop changes - most obvious are the buttons which are now square cornered rather than round cornered. See the second attachment. Appearance Preferences usually still shows the Theme as Clearlooks although I have had it change to "Custom" a time or two. Logout/login does not fix the problem. A reboot will fix the problem and return to the correct Clearlooks Theme

Is it possible to build a MacOS X compatible pc using of-the-shelf compoments?
For example, what motherboards are considered compatible (i presume they must have EFI, lol), what sound cards, wifi cards, video cards etc.
Also, why not a start an OS X compatibility topic/list?
It would be very nice, as many people would be able to simply print the list and go shopping (no need to search a billion other sites with ambiguous info) and it would allow many people to get a mac for the price of a pc
PS: Don't start recommending the OSx86 operating system. It's a heavily kluged up OS I do not want. I want the real OS X.

Mac OS X as guest on VirtualBox with Ubuntu Host?
Note: This differs from previous Mac-on-linux/windows questions because:
I don't mind buying the software if I can install it somehow, I'm asking about virtualization, not emulation.
Is there any way to run OSX programs on my linux machine? I'm thinking something like running virtualbox with an OSX install on it, which works great for Windows programs.
If it's not possible, why not? (Perhaps virtualbox can't pretend to be the Mac hardware, or there is some kind of licence violation).

The pthreads library on macos does not have barrier functions (pthread_barrier_t ....). Is there a way to get around this? I know I can do :
#ifdef __APPLE__
pthread_barrier_t ...
#else
my_barrier ...
#endif
But I would like to avoid this approach as there are a lot of places in my program where I would have to make this change. Can I perhaps rebuild the pthreads library on macos without affecting other apps ?

I have assembled an "old" PC I want to attach to my 32" Sony TV. Mainly for browsing, watching videos, playing casual games. Is there a special Desktop theme suited for big screen ? In other words: Big icons, big text? Not sure if Unity helps out here. I would be willing to install another desktop manager (e.g. XFCE, KDE) than Gnome if it provides such features. Firefox for examples supports increased font size for browsing. For shell I've played around with guake and font sizes around 20 pix. It just would be nice to have "enlarged" menu entries.
