Ubuntu :: Migrating Home Dir With Desktop And Firefox Customize Configs?

Jul 11, 2010

I installed a new, larger hard drive and installed 10.04 with home directory encryption. Then I mounted my old hard drive's home partition to a folder and copied the entire home directory off of it onto my new hard drive like so:

Code:
chaz@brutus:~$ cp -ravv ../mnt/chaz/* ./
This seems to have worked and it looks like all my files are here on my new hard drive. However when I rebooted I expected my old desktop settings to apply, and my firefox to have my bookmarks, history, and add-ons. Apparently it doesn't work like that.

In the past when I reinstalled Ubuntu and kept my old home partition, all my program configs were saved and worked in the new installation, even if I had to install the program first. How can I duplicate that behavior in copying my old home partition to the new hard drive?

Ubuntu :: Migrating Home Folder To Another Distro

Jan 2, 2010

I am currently Running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala on my laptop, i am considering a change and want to move to Fedora 12 for a while(ill be back, i promise). Will i be able to migrate most of my settings over to Fedora 12 without trouble? What will be compatible and what wont? Also, for anyone running fedora already how does RPM package manager compare to debian's advanced packaging tool? I have heard, in older versions at least, dependencies were a headache, is this still the case?

OpenSUSE Install :: Migrating The Encrypted Home-directory?

Oct 5, 2010

I am trying to open an encrypted home directory from opensuse 11.2 with opensuse 11.3. This means i have a user.img and a user.key So far i have done:

losetup /dev/loop3 user.img
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/loop3 home
Enter passphrase for /dev/loop3:

No key available with this passphrase. At this point it will not accept my passphrase.

A luksDump reveals:

cryptsetup luksDump /dev/loop3
LUKS header information for /dev/loop3

[code]....

When i try to use the key file, i get:

cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/loop3 home --key-file home.key No key available with this passphrase.

Ubuntu :: Migrating Firefox / Thunderbird Profiles From Windows

Apr 28, 2011

I am trying to do as the title states, I am however having problems. I have tried deleting the profile and profile.ini in kubuntu and copying over the windows profile to home/user/.mozilla/firefox for example with firefox, this didn't work. I tried copying it there with the existing profile and changing the path of the ini file, to the windows profile name, this didn't work either. The only thing that I can think is that I am using 64 bit windows and 32 bit kubuntu.I have tried using firefox sync, this didn't work either.

OpenSUSE :: Failure Migrating Firefox And Thunderbird From 11.2 To 11.3

Sep 9, 2010

get my system from 11.2 to 11.3, I made a clean, new install instead of an upgrade. (I also used the opportunity to change to a new, bigger harddrive.) I installed Mozilla Thunderbird from the repositories and (using the root account) tried to replace the automatic entry in .thunderbird with my own cryptic-named folder which I copied in from external storage. I changed the target name in the profiles.ini to my folder's name. (I also made sure that although "root" did the copying, my main user is still the owner of all folders and files.)Same procedure for Firefox (except for the installation part).

I made the same kind of copying for the OpenOffice "user"-folder and Office came up with all my individual settings. But both Firefox and Thunderbird gave a failure notice, telling that "the program is already running, but does not react. In order to open a new window, you need to shutdown the existing process or restart your computer."(Original German: "Thunderbird wird bereits ausgefhrt, reagiert aber nicht. Um ein neues Fenster ffnen zu knnen, mssen Sie zuerst den bestehenden Thunderbird-Prozess beenden oder ihren Computer neu starten.")

I restarted the computer several times, but to no avail. (A similar (or the same) bug was reported two years ago, but it seems that no solution was reached [see ]Thunderbird lt sich nicht mehr starten - linuxforen.de -- User helfen Usern.)

Ubuntu :: Desktop Doesn't Correspond To /home/user/Desktop?

Sep 25, 2010

While I was trying to drag the Desktop icon to the places sidepane in nautilus file browser so that I can have it above Documents icon, I accidentally dropped it in Documents icon. I immediately deleted the "Desktop" shortcut that was created in "/home/user/Documents" but it was too late already and the damage has been done. When I try to create a new document on my desktop, it says "Error while coying to Desktop There was an error getting information about the destination. Show more details Error stating file '/home/user/Documents/' Desktop':No such file or directory" Now, I know that my desktop now is pointing me to a location in Documents folder which doesn't exist at all. I tried looking for any available settings/options in gconf-editor, but only in vain.

I'm using wpa2 with my wireless router.

The reason I need this is because I'm planning on installing ubuntu server edition and there's no GUI for wireless setup.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Eth0 And Eth1 Will Not Go Away And Their Configs Conflict With Eth3

The problem is no matter what I do, eth0 and eth1 will not go away and their configs conflict with eth3. I removed Network Manager via yum. I deleted the ifcfg-eth0/1 files from /etc/ sysconfig/network-scripts and /etc/sysconfig/networking/default and profiles. In all of these locations the ifcfg-eth0/1 files keep reappearing after a reboot. I am at a loss at this point how to get rid of these non-existant NICs.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Won't Work After Putting Home Folder On New Partition?

Jan 9, 2010

I have just finished transferring my home folder to a new partition. I did so by carefully following instructions on this link [URL] I had firefox open and was copying instructions one by one into an open terminal window.

When I tried to reboot ubuntu I first had a problem with ICEauthority which I think is now fixed and ubuntu then started as normal but when I tried to run Firefox I got a message saying that it was already open.

As I had Firefox open when I was copying files to the new partition I assume that some setting was copied saying that Firefox was open?

Is it possible to simply adjust this setting or do I have to undo the transfer and repeat the process with firefox closed.

I have not deleted my copy of the old home folder yet.
