my dads decided to try out ubuntu on his pc, so far everythings up and running smoothly. i am trying to get the video capture card working with tvtime. I have ran "lspci" in the terminal which has detected the following.
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82875P/E7210 Memory Controller Hub (rev 02)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82875P Processor to AGP Controller (rev 02)

I get as far as "make KDIR=/path/to/kernel/source/tree" and got lost, i am running ubuntu 9.10. What do i put where =KDIR is?

I am not sure which thread this fits in, I am facing a strange problem. There is a code tarball that I cross-compile on a Fedora Core 9 machine and it builds fine. But when I do the same thing on a (heavily used) Fedora Core 7 machine, the build keeps failing in the gnuapp folders grep, coreutils etc. I have tried 'make distclean', and clearing the config.cache but no impact.
Note: I export the PATH variable (to the local cross-compiler) before starting the build. The cross compilation is for the MIPS processor and GNU makefiles are used.

I have used the NVidia proprietary drivers for awhile. Yes, I know about nv and I even know about the prepackaged ones, but I've never minded getting the latest from NVidia, dropping out of X, and running the install which automatically rebuilds everything.
I recently took the synaptic update to 2.6.32-24. It worked fine and -- I guess -- migrated my driver. I didn't think about it. For no particular reason today I tried to build the latest NVIDIA driver (256.53 -- had been on an earlier 256 series). The build failed with some conftest failures. Even trying to rebuild the working driver failed. Reverting to 2.6.32-23 allowed both to be built and they work. So something the NVIDIA installer is expecting headerwise must be different between 2.6.32-23 and -24.

I am running fully updated Stretch. I am tring to complie a driver for Ralink 5370 USB WiFi dongle. When I do make I get the following error:

I had no problems up to the newest kernel version. But for 2.6.40-4 akmods fails to build the kmod with the following error:

I'm new to linux and recently installed openSUSE 11.1 on my Lenovo Thinkpad SL500. So far it's great... only problem is the hotkeys and brightness control don't work. Digging around online I found this "experimental" driver that purportedly works fine, but I have no idea how to compile, install, or otherwise use it. Here... tetromino's lenovo-sl-laptop at master - GitHub I'm not sure what to do with the makefile and C file provided. For example, what do I do with this instruction...
"To enable the brightness control, load the module with the "control_backlight=1" module parameter (i.e. insmod lenovo-sl-laptop.ko control_backlight=1 )" I know someone on here will be able to explain how to do this in a "computer engineering for chemists" language! I'm comfortable enough working in the terminal with commands, but have found no real straightforward explanation of how to do so (only "programming" experience is MATLAB m file writing).

I am having a terrible time getting any networking to work with a new RedHat Enterprise 6 64 bit install. I have an init script running as a special build user which performs an automated build that fails with (Too many open files).I updated /etc/security/limits to allow the special user more open files, but that didn't work - the init script still isn't allowed more open files.Here's a demonstration of the problem;

I'm in love with my Opensuse 11.2. Love my KDE 4.4. The only thing I miss from my Ubuntu installation, is the ability to use Boxee. I would be more than willing to compile Boxee from source. I only have 2 problems with that:
1) I don't know where I can find all the build-deps or what they are for that matter to build Boxee.
2) I'm running on a Netbook. Yes, my measly Intel Atom is no fun for compiling and building.
What are my options/what can I do to get Boxee up and running on 11.2? I've tried searching on build service for an RPM, but I think due to legal restrictions, Boxee can't be on there.

as I'm advancing in building some nice rpm I finally wanted to install on of my gems also the build was successful the actual install fails with missing dependencies.

I have a large tarball which is bz2 compressed, and I would like to get a md5 sum of the files contained in it, as I have a separate directory on another server containing what I think are the same files. I want to check to see if the tarballs files are the same as the uncompressed files on the remote server. The files are big 10gb+ so I was wondering if there was a quick way without having to uncompress them all and then md5 them.

My goal is to install the i386 build on one partition and the 64-bit build on another. I have been away from Linux for a while and am sick to death of Win7, want to come home. :-}
Booted on i386 side of DVD, system freezes after a couple of lines that start with ATA2. Does not respond to 3 finger salute, ctrl-c, nothing. Have to press reset. I have tried both huge.s and hugesmp.s kernels
Booted on 64-bit side, comes up fine. I performed the install, selected for automatic lilo install. Lilo install hung but I was able to reboot. I booted off the 64-bit side again, entered the following: huge.s root=/dev/sde3 rdinit= ro It booted fully to the login prompt but the keyboard does not work, no input.

I've been trying to back up my system to a tarball for quite a while now. I recently bought a tape drive, and it works. But I'm having a little bit of trouble getting tar to work--whenever I try to copy the files (either directly to the drive at /dev/st0 or to a tarball), I end up with a "file changed as we read it" error, and tar quits before the archive is done. Is there some way I can either prevent this from happening and/or tell tar to just skip that file and keep the job going?

I've read a few other threads about installing tarballs and just about all of them mention running the ./configure script. BTW, I'm working on a machine without internet connection and I'm using karmic. I successfully extracted the contents of the tarball and a directory of those contents was created. I navigated into that directory and tried "sudo ./configure" as per some instructions I found on the net, but the result was "bash:./configure: no such file or directory".
I get this same error message when I try "./configure --help | less" Is "./configure" something that is meant to come as part of the OS or do I need to install that separately too!?! when I try to create a keyboard short cut for opening a terminal by using the "keyboard shortcuts" option in system > preferences the setting lists it as "disabled". Is there some way for enabling? I know how to get to a complete screen terminal by using ctrl+alt+f2 but I also want a shortcut for other terminal box which is accessible via the applications area.

I have a script - called 'backit' - to back up files to a tarball - listed below (<backup.lst> contains files I want backed up)

Typing 'Backit' in the shell works very well producing a backup file, <backup.tar.gz>, of 2 298 953 bytes and contains all the correct files. So far, so good! I put a line in crontab - /home/alan/bin/backit
The program runs every hour on the hour and produces the <backup.tar.gz> file. However, this file contains only some of the files and has a size of 76 762 bytes. Using "tar tvf backup.tar.gz" lists some of the files and ends with an error indicating an EOF encountered before the end of file. If the script executes correctly when typed into the shell, why does it not run to completion correctly when run by cron?

Got PGP 6.5.8 for Linux working with Ubuntu 10.10. It involved converting two .rpm files to .deb with the alien utility and then installing by simply double clicking on the .deb files in the file browser invoking the Ubuntu Software Manager. I put the two .deb files in a tarball (tar.gz) and would like suggestions as to how to make the tarball available for other Ubuntu users to download.

I want to build my own GNOME. The problem I have is that I cannot find the tarball for the GNOME source code. Another thing I've read on their website is that the way to build it is not the conventional './configure, make, make install', and that it has to be done using a multi-phase process. I have an upstream source tarball which, by coincidence, already contains a directory named "debian", but which has nothing to do with the "debian" directory for packaging. Assume also that renaming this directory would be difficult, for example because many other parts of the code would need to be modified. On an rpm based system, this poses no problem to the packager, since the rpm build process is driven by an external spec file and never has to modify the original source. What would be the best way to package this on a debian system? Is it absolutely necessary to rename the original "debian" directory? Or can I make the dpkg build tools operate out of a different directory?

I am trying to install Homebank, a money manager. No problems untarring it. But I'm stuck on ./configure. When I run that command, I get this output:
