Fedora :: Remove The Computer, Trash, And Home Folder From The Desktop And Have Them Just In The Panel?
Jan 20, 2011
Is there a way to remove the Computer, Trash, and Home folder from the desktop and have them just in the panel? I like a clean desktop with no icons, and would like to use the top panel as a "dock" of sorts.

A long time ago I was trying to find a way to have the computer icon, the home icon, and the trash icon on my desktop in Ubuntu (like in windows), I got them on fine. When I put them on I used some program that was already on Ubuntu, the guide I used told me it was the equivalent of the registry editor in windows. Now I want to get on this program again to see what I can do?

I am going through some old baby pictures of my daughter over 15,000+ and she is only 3 years old.....
Here is my problem. I am moving and sorting all of these and tossing some. I have several times right clicked on the trash and by mistake clicked remove from panel. Is there anyway to hide that option for the trash? I know I have done this several times before and now its happening alto with the project I am working on. It would be nice if I could disable that option.

I have an old hard drive w/XandrOS that I decided to make external storage. I didn't bother wiping it. I figured I could just replace files on it like .mozilla folder.I currently have OSS 11.3 where I chose to copy and paste .mozilla from OSS to external HD. I was denied access to copy over certain files. Then I made the bonehead maneuver of trashing .mozilla from the external HD. Now, my trash can says that my access is denied to "cookperm.txt" and other files. I attempted to restore it, but it can't because the new .mozilla file is the external HD.Wow, did I corner myself. I could really use some help. Just want to eliminate that old

After removing GDM, XFCE4, and the crap-load of dependencies that came with it, something must have gone wrong. I can not place items nor delete items any more. How do I fix this problem of mine? I'm using KDE at the moment.
Code:
Could not make folder /home/theif519/.local/share/Trash
Deletion of files is necessary. I have installed libtrash hoping it'd work, but it didn't, I even did chmod 755 like it suggested I do. What do I do?

I'm using Fedora 15 in fallback mode.
Is it possible to remove the desktop switcher applet from the bottom panel? Or autohide or even delete a panel? That is, is there software I can install to do these things in Gnome 3?

I was recently learning to compile software from source code(tar.gz) files,he instructions told me to extract the files to the desktop. After I did this, I now see the folder on the desktop with the files in it, and I am unable to delete the folder. The error message says "there was an error deleting copying". Error removing file:Permission denied. Has anyone ever experienced this? I've run out of ideas as to how to get rid of it

Does anyone know how to add a fully working (icon changes) Trashcan to the Desktop Folder View?I don't want the plasmoid/widget on the Desktop or on the Task Manager Panel.I can right click -> Create New -> Link to Location(URL), but the icon doesn't change. If the Desktop Folder View is a plasmoid, I guess I'm asking can a plasmoid (trash can) run inside another plasmoid (desktop view) %-)

I've just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. When I right-click a panel and choose "New Panel", the panel is made, but is not visible. The panel is placed on the left side of the screen, and icons on the desktop is moved to the right. Also windows does not use the full width of the screen when maximized. I've tried to remove the panel configuration in my home directory, logout and login, installing ATI drivers and running a gnome-panel command (from another post on ubuntu forums), but nothing works.

I wanted to create another panel on my computer. I created one, which formed directly above one that I already had (at the bottom of one of my two screens). Just out of curiosity I asked it to autohide. That was a big mistake. Now, I am unable to right click to remove or change the panel (the right click menu doesn't appear). This is true for all my panels. I thought logging out might fix it. No luck. Restart. No luck. Now my "top level" panel won't load, which means I don't have access to any of the main menus at all. Basically, the only think I can access at this point is what is on my desktop.

I have just created an 11.3 64 bit image using susestudio. All seems well but would like to customize the desktop via my script that I have added. My question is how do I remove the home directory and the trash icon from the desktop? Or better said what is the path to removing the symbolic link, I cannot find the symbolic links in the desktop directory. It is empty, I do not see any symbolic links under /home/test/Desktop?

I switched from OpenSUSE to Fedora and I moved a folder full of coursework and a backup of that folder (which was pretty outdated) onto a usb. Once I had installed Fedora, I first deleted the outdated backup, intending to make another fresh one but then I realised that somehow the original files hadn't copied from OpenSUSE onto the USB.
The situation I'm in now is that I only have the outdated backup in the trash can so I need that back but I get the following error message when I try and recover it:
Quote:
Error while copying to "desktop". There was an error getting information about the destination.
And then when I select the "Show more details" drop-down:
Quote:
Error stating file '/media/5E7A-32A1/desktop': No such file or directory

My desktop is set to my home folder and I can't seem to get it to change. It happened because accidently dragged Desktop icon into a hidden folder. Then when I copied it back it's set to the home folder. Even changing it back in gconf-editor does nothing. how to get it back to normal. I hate having my home folder as the desktop.
