I can't access the home-folder. There is a problem with ecryptfs

After installing Fedora next to Ubuntu with a common home-folder, I've had troubles with many different things. When I finally fixed grub2 so I could display all the OSs available, I tried to boot Ubuntu. Then I got three messages, one telling me .ICEauthority wasn't able to upgrade. I've now realized it was because my user in Ubuntu didn't own the home-folder. I typed "sudo chown -R jp:jp /home/jp/" in a shell, and it worked. But when I then logged into fedora, I got the same error messages, so I had to type "su -c chown -R jp:jp /home/jp". Apparently, jp in Fedora isn't the same user as jp in Ubuntu.
How do I make my home folder owned by both?
I can't access the home folder. sudo nautilus in Terminal returned this message:

I had issues on my last install , I couldn't boot into it cause I accidentally uninstalled python 2.6 and everything it was attached to. I have Ubuntu 10.10, and everytime I click on Places on the top bar, and then one of my home folders it opens up a terminal, for every folder. The only way I can access my home folders and such is to open a terminal and type nautilus, I have tried everything, what is going on??
View 3 Replies View RelatedUbuntu and am using the 64bit version of Ubuntu 10.04.Now I can access the folders in my home folder through the places GUI, but I can't access them in the terminal. When I begin typing in the terminal and press tab it does not autocomplete, and typing the directory manually says that there is no such file or directory, even though when I type dir or ls they are clearly there.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm still running 9.10, but now would like to install 10.10. Now I'm wondering about how to keep access to my encrypted home folder.
Usually, I don't do an 'upgrade', but a fresh re-install. I have a separate /home partition, so normally this works just fine. However, my home directory is encrypted (a feature that was introduced with 9.10, I believe).
So, if I whack the system partition and do a fresh reinstall there, will the new install still be able to read my home directory? Or do I need to save a key file from somewhere?
I've done something a bit stupid. I've already encrypted my home folder and just set it to log in without requesting my password. When i do log in now, no startup sound plays, several error messages appear but no desktop. I think it's because I now don't have an opportunity to enter my home folder password, and it doesn't work at all. Is there any way to edit account settings from 'root' or anything because this really has crippled my computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't access any of the sub-folders or files in my home folder on Ubuntu. I've checked the folder associations, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I've also opened the mimeapps.list file and the inode/directory association seems fine - inode/directory=nautilus-folder-handler.desktop;
I'm running Intrepid (8.10) (please don't ask me to upgrade! ) and the issue started after using Qtpfsgui 1.9.3 a couple of time to create HDR images. I guess Qtpfsgui broke an association somewhere, but where? I can access other folders, on Computer and Filesystem, but not on my home folder.
I can't access my home folder using nautilus ( and everything that using gui), but I easily can access to subfolders e.g. "Music", "Downloads" and others. What can cause this trouble?
Also I can retrieve directory listing using terminal.

I have my system upgraded from Karmic 9.04 (automatic distro upgraded), but I have too many problems with this upgrade, (nvidia video card not working properly, I can't mount my mp3 player (sansa), and another issues with sounds, etc.) Since I have a separate /home partition, and separate / partition, I would like to do a fresh install of lucid on my first partition (/dev/sda1), thinking of maybe it will fix all my problems with a fresh install from a Lucid CD,
My questions are:
1. If I do a fresh install on /, will I be able to access my home folder on the extended partition?.
2. If I do a fresh install on /, the Lucid installer will recognise my /home partition, or will install everything again?. (meaning another home folder), I don't want 2 home folder,
3. Am I going to have a permission problems between the fresh install and all my stuff in /home partition?
I logged in to Recover Mode ("Drop to root shell prompt") this morning to do something. Naturally, I wanted access to my encrypted home folder.
The README file says to run ecryptfs-mount-private. However, that command returns an error:
"ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly."
This cannot be correct, because if I log in normally, I get my home folder without any problem.
How can I access my encrypted home folder when I boot via Recover Mode?
i installed my desktop environment from synaptic manager! so when i restarted my computer i couldn't log into the desktop environment. How can i recover from this? Also,how can i access my home folder from a live cd?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 a couple of days ago. This is my secondary operating system. The main one is Mint 8 and in order to have the same documents in both OSs I have a separate /home partition, but for some reason I don't see any of my Documents. In the installation I told fedora that I already had a /home partition and to use it. Also if I mount Mint's disk, while I can browse the folders, I can't see any document .
Finally I can access my Mint's home folder and files but since my username in fedora has a capital A it created another home folder. How can I change my home folder path so it point to the other home folder?
I'm setting up a Linux machine thet'll be shared by several users, some of whom will be admins. Is there a way to restrict access to a user's home folder (encrypt or block completely) for other regular/admin users?

View 3 Replies View RelatedInstead of doing this by actually changing the apache directory, I simply put in a symlink from the WWW directory.This worked many times, but today, under Maverick, I got the following error : "Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server."I spent a LOT of time on the web trying to solve this error and in the end, it got solved simply by enabling permissions "access" to "others" direclty on my home folder (because my Dropbox folder is, of course, within my home folder).However, I have no idea if this is a good idea. Does this mean that simply anyone could access any file on my computer ??Alternatively, does anyone know how I could proceed to make this LAMP server work WITHOUT having to change my Home directy permissions this way ?

When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

I have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

I hunted down my files from Windows that I need for school (old papers, research, etc.) and found it under "file system" --> "host" --> "users" --> "zbollman". I can access all of my files and I'm happy now that I don't have to boot between the two constantly to get what I need. However, I tried to copy the file to my home folder, but it said I do not have enough room. I'm about 5GB short. How do I go about allocating more space so that I can copy this folder so that all of my information is easily accessible?

I'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)
Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

Installed Ubuntu along with Debian on my Notebook and use Grub Manager to choose between them on startup. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.

Having been converted to using "Linux" about 8 months ago, and gaining confidence to try different distros, and figuring out how to 'keep' my Home folder, I've had great fun trying them out and learning as I go. The latest distro I'm trying is Kubuntu, which I really like and will keep for a while. However, when I was partitioning in the set-up, I omitted to create my home folder. Instead I now have is a partition the size of my "old" home folder, and to which I have to sign into to gain access. The files are all there so that is no problem.
1. What i would like to know is if this set-up is OK, or should I change it so that it is actually in the home folder (if so how?( a re-install?))
2. If I should decide to try out another distro in the future will this be safe to change to "home"?.
