i have a problem with th home folder button. When I click the button from the drop down ''PLACES'' menu i get this "Error File not found'' but if i go to places>computer>home folder, then it opens. If i type in ''CWD" i get this "/home/piepie''.so the home folder does exist, and if i type /home/piepie is a directory.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSuddenly, my "Places --> Desktop" folder is identical to my "Places --> Home Folder". This happened by accident somehow, and the folders and files in my Home Folder "/home/rj" are displayed on my desktop, and I don't want them to be.
When I click on "Places --> Desktop" it's as if I've clicked on "Places --> Home Folder" (the "File Browser" directory opens, the location is set at "/home/rj", and the title at the top is "File Browser").
Elementary stuff for a lot of you, I'm sure, but I'm blanking on how the Desktop folder can be restored to what I'd like it to be (basically empty, except for a "Downloads" folder), and my folders and files kept off the actual desktop (except for the "Downloads" folder).
I am having this odd problem since I did a clean install of Maverick. I installed Exaile music player but after that when I click on 'Home folder' (or any subfolder in it) under 'Places' menu Exaile pops up instead.I uninstalled exaile for a while and everything worked fine but reinstalling it caused the same problem again.

I liked having it there- I can access that folder through "home folder" but it was nice having it where I could get to it with just one click. How can I get it back? (There is no option to edit the places menu in the "edit menus" thingie)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm keeping my documents, music, and videos etc. on a separate partition from my home directory, formatted with encrypted fat32 so that I can access it from both my windows and my ubuntu installation. So I've made the folders, transferred the files, and I selected custom icons (by right-click, properties, click on custom icon, then select the file from /usr/share/icons/Humanity/places/4.
So far so good. The problem is that the custom icons don't appear in the Places sidebar in Nautilus or the main Places menu in gnome. It just comes up as a regular folder.

Does anyone have an idea/workaround so that I can use my custom icons in the Places menu as well? I have tried it with scalable icons, with no difference. I've also tried looking for a configuration file which might have the details in, but I haven't found it - I suppose this probably has something to do with how the Places menu is automatically generated.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala with Gnome.
So this morning I went to the places menu to open my home folder and it launched the movie maker...
It does that for all of the folders I have listed under places. If I open a mounted partition from my desktop it works fine and launched the file manager.
I was trying to view a dvd on ubuntu (which works on windows) so I downloaded a few progams from the synapatic manager and software center - nothing made the dvd work but now when I go to "places" and "home folder" movie player opens and has a error message window that is at least 10 deep that says "could not open location; you might not have permission to open file." I can't get to home folder at all!Did I totally ruin Ubuntu? Is this fixable? I rebooted and that didn't help

I can open Computer, partitions and devices, just not the first 7 folders which i think are bookmarks.

Ok, I eventually solved it. Appears I had inadvertently selected another program as default folder openenr. Just opening any folder with right click - open with - folder openenr reassigned nautilus and opens Places folders ok.
I recently preformed a full update to my openSuSe 11.3 x64 + gnome install. Everything was running fine before the update however post a number of features have stopped working or have changed. I used the command zypper up to update everything. The errors I've been recieving are as follows, Wastebasket
Won't open on via Desktop or Places menu. Gives the following error "Could not display "trash:" File Is Of An Unknown Type". If I drop things on the Wastebasket the files do go to /home/USERNAME/.local/share/Trash/files but I can't Empty Wastebasket upon right click as the option is highlighted out.
Computer Icon If I try to open it from link in Places menu I get the error Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations.. The link to it has also disappeared from the left hand panel if I have a Nautilus window open.
Mounted Icons Previously I used to have 4 drives mounted;
1 network (NFS),
1 encrypted (TrueMount),
2 Windows (partitions of main machine)
Out of these only the encrypted and network drive showed on the Desktop and two Windows drives would stay mounted under /windows but have no icon on the Desktop. After the update, all these drives are on the desktop and but the only way to not have them appear on Desktop is to set Gnome config not to show any of the icons on Desktop. Although these are independent errors, they are all related to folders (at least indirectly) so I felt it was better to group them together to give a better picture of the issue.
When I click "Places" in the top gnome panel of Maverick, then click any link such as "Home" or "Desktop" (or any bookmark) Movie Player opens (instead of Nautilus)! This started today. I have rebooted twice, but that didn't help (no surprise--this isn't Windows).

I had to reformat my hard drive because I was trying to run windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 on the same drive which caused many problems. After re-installing ubuntu 10.10 alone I noticed that I no longer had access to any of the "Places" sub menus, Home folder through Ubuntu one.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor about a week or two when I try to open a folder from the menu "Places" of Gnome 2.32.0 (with Fedora 14 OS) the program Rythmbox starts instead. This happens even when I try to access a connected harddrive which requires entry of a code. After entering the code again Rythmbox opens! This doesn't happen only with "Computer", "Network" and "Connect to Server" of "Places". I can't think of anything that I did (apart from using Rythmbox quite often recently) that could have caused this, so I assume that it is a bug of Gnome. Have other people encountered this problem? Unmounted the icons were just silver-grey and when mounted they turned white.Strangely however, I don't see this with Lucid Lynx and Gnome 2.30.2! What is wrong here?

However the gnome menu "Places" home folder. home .documents, music, pictures and videos does not open up Nautilus. I get the error "Could not open location 'file:///home/tom'" This should be an easy fix but I am lost. I also am having an issue with Alt-F2 not opening up the run command. On the top main menu bar, "Applications, Places, & system"..For some reason, "Places" is not working properly. I get the full drop down menu & I can click on any option there, but nothing happens.....Applications & System are both fine & working properly, it's just the Places tab that is an issue.My OS is Lucid 10.04 64bit.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor a few days now every time I click on Places in the TopMenu, a Brasero screen opens up instead with the heading Brasero - New Data Disc Project and has a small popup screen over it asking whether files should be fully windows compatible. The defaulted image file shown at the bottom of the Brasero screen for burning is /home/thane/brasero.iso , which failed and needed to be aborted a few days ago. Things I've tried so far: -Completely remove brasero (about 4 times so far) and restart computer. -Scour the computer for any files I could find with brasero in the filename. -Attempt to remove the brasero.iso from the brasero screen -- it won't let me - I've tried but I don't see any log files for brasero, although I've no idea, what they would be called. Nothing obvious to me in /var/logs. -I can successfully use brasero to copy another disc, but as soon as I click on Places afterwards, up comes brasero again instead. -If I remove brasero (using synaptic), I can then access my directories fine, after clicking on Places in the TopMenu. But as soon as I reinstall brasero, the default disc burning software, which came with 10.10, I'm right back with problems.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).
I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.
I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.
