So this morning I went to the places menu to open my home folder and it launched the movie maker...
It does that for all of the folders I have listed under places. If I open a mounted partition from my desktop it works fine and launched the file manager.
Which ever option I chosse in places desktop, downloads etc Movieplayer automatically launches.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to view a dvd on ubuntu (which works on windows) so I downloaded a few progams from the synapatic manager and software center - nothing made the dvd work but now when I go to "places" and "home folder" movie player opens and has a error message window that is at least 10 deep that says "could not open location; you might not have permission to open file." I can't get to home folder at all!Did I totally ruin Ubuntu? Is this fixable? I rebooted and that didn't help
View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't know how this happened, been using Ubuntu for a few years now (but I still consider myself a newbie): Using 10.10. In the "places" drop down menu, when I click on locations such as Home, Documents, Downloads, etc, the Totem Movie Players runs, and tries to "open" the files in the respective folders --- instead of a Nautilus file manager window opening up.
How could this have happened? I looked in both Nautilus and Movie Player "Preferences", but was unable to find any customizable options that could be related.
Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid), GNOME 2.30.2. After some time of correct operation, my dropdown menu from "Places" in the GNOME Panel has gone wrong.
If I click Places and then click on any of the dropdown shown, Home Folder, Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, before the horizontal line separator, Banshee launches. Those after the separator, Computer, Floppy and my Hard Drives, launch correctly.
I have tried restoring the Panel to its original setting with no luck.
My latest problem: (Ubuntu 10.04)My "pictures" folder is missing from the "Places" menu. It used to be there....I didn't do anything...but now it's gone. I liked having it there- I can access that folder through "home folder" but it was nice having it where I could get to it with just one click. How can I get it back? (There is no option to edit the places menu in the "edit menus" thingie)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm keeping my documents, music, and videos etc. on a separate partition from my home directory, formatted with encrypted fat32 so that I can access it from both my windows and my ubuntu installation. So I've made the folders, transferred the files, and I selected custom icons (by right-click, properties, click on custom icon, then select the file from /usr/share/icons/Humanity/places/4.
So far so good. The problem is that the custom icons don't appear in the Places sidebar in Nautilus or the main Places menu in gnome. It just comes up as a regular folder.

Does anyone have an idea/workaround so that I can use my custom icons in the Places menu as well? I have tried it with scalable icons, with no difference. I've also tried looking for a configuration file which might have the details in, but I haven't found it - I suppose this probably has something to do with how the Places menu is automatically generated.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala with Gnome.
How can I add Home Folder launcher available in the Places menu to the panel?

When I click the button from the drop down ''PLACES'' menu i get this "Error File not found'' but if i go to places>computer>home folder, then it opens. If i type in ''CWD" i get this "/home/piepie''.so the home folder does exist, and if i type /home/piepie is a directory.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently preformed a full update to my openSuSe 11.3 x64 + gnome install. Everything was running fine before the update however post a number of features have stopped working or have changed. I used the command zypper up to update everything. The errors I've been recieving are as follows, Wastebasket
Won't open on via Desktop or Places menu. Gives the following error "Could not display "trash:" File Is Of An Unknown Type". If I drop things on the Wastebasket the files do go to /home/USERNAME/.local/share/Trash/files but I can't Empty Wastebasket upon right click as the option is highlighted out.
Computer Icon If I try to open it from link in Places menu I get the error Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations.. The link to it has also disappeared from the left hand panel if I have a Nautilus window open.
Mounted Icons Previously I used to have 4 drives mounted;
1 network (NFS),
1 encrypted (TrueMount),
2 Windows (partitions of main machine)
Out of these only the encrypted and network drive showed on the Desktop and two Windows drives would stay mounted under /windows but have no icon on the Desktop. After the update, all these drives are on the desktop and but the only way to not have them appear on Desktop is to set Gnome config not to show any of the icons on Desktop. Although these are independent errors, they are all related to folders (at least indirectly) so I felt it was better to group them together to give a better picture of the issue.
when i try to watch a movie on movie player from the internet i get the requires a Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer plugin which is not installed. how do i install it?

View 6 Replies View RelatedFor about a week or two when I try to open a folder from the menu "Places" of Gnome 2.32.0 (with Fedora 14 OS) the program Rythmbox starts instead. This happens even when I try to access a connected harddrive which requires entry of a code. After entering the code again Rythmbox opens! This doesn't happen only with "Computer", "Network" and "Connect to Server" of "Places". I can't think of anything that I did (apart from using Rythmbox quite often recently) that could have caused this, so I assume that it is a bug of Gnome. Have other people encountered this problem? (I assume that it is not Fedora specific, but rather a general problem of Gnome) If so,

Now I want to rip this DVD but all the rippers I tried return a error at that point when they try to rip it. Rippers I tried:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. It is working well, but Movie Player does not work, and Dragon Player plays videos/movies but with no audio. VLC works fine. how to either remove Movie Player and Dragon Player or make them work. I tried apt-get remove mplayer but that doesn't work. If not that, I wonder if the default media player can be changed to VLC, e.g., when you click any video it will start to play using VLC?

Unmounted the icons were just silver-grey and when mounted they turned white.Strangely however, I don't see this with Lucid Lynx and Gnome 2.30.2! What is wrong here?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAnyone know what it's listed under?9.10 Karmic Koala..I'm customising all my preferred aps and use the amazing VLC for videos, I don't want 'Movie Player' there, but I can't find it in Synaptic to delete it and want it gone, not just the shortcut deleted.
Whilst discussing preferred aps, I can also highly recommend ditching Firefox and Evolution for Opera; more features, faster browsing, handles plugin videos better (no greying out), has a built in mail client so everything's in one place, etc. Tried just about every other browser, always go back to Opera.
I noticed after i fixed a problem with my skype microphone, that the speaker icon for the sound preferences has vanished. Also, there is no sound in my movie player and I cant turn the volume up or down. Its like the computer is set at one volume

View 7 Replies View RelatedThis is the first time I tried playing a VCD on my laptop and when I tried playing it on VLC, it indicated that an error, that it cannot read the file. I searched around the net for some solution and tried opening the VCD through the terminal to no avail. I tried switching to the Movie Player but it's the same. They play the initial 'Warning on illegal copying of the film, etc.' which lasts for about 15 seconds but after that, it won't play at all.
