Ubuntu Installation :: Gnome Menu "Places" Not Working In 10.04
May 2, 2010
I just upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04. Almost everything works great. However the gnome menu "Places" home folder. home .documents, music, pictures and videos does not open up Nautilus. I get the error "Could not open location 'file:///home/tom'" This should be an easy fix but I am lost. I also am having an issue with Alt-F2 not opening up the run command. I might be having an issue with key board layout.

There are measures to stop this in Windows even though there are still things you can't get rid of. Now on to my question, Why can't I edit the Places menu but I can edit the Applications and System menus. I really want to get rid of the Recent Documents menu header. I don't like things like that right up on front street. I am quite a stickler about privacy and one of the reasons I decided to try out linux is because I heard it was better in the sense of respecting privacy. But now I am seeing that you don't even have the ability to get rid of a tracking item such as Recent Documents. Quite disappointing.
I can understand tracking recent changes to the system but it is not necessary to track what you open or what you browse on the internet. Hence Firfox's ability to not store history and the clear cache, history, etc. on shutdown of Firefox. So Am I misinformed about the fact that linux does respect privacy? What kind of world are we coming to that it is necessary to track everything. Especially here in the U.S., I mean I'm thinking 1984 here lol. Anyway, how to remove these tracking features in Fedora. I mean in the sense of just stopping it. It sucks to have to go through and "clear" everything that tracks you every time you want to log off or shut down.

I'm having a strange problem in my gnome installation. I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.

When I click "Places" in the top gnome panel of Maverick, then click any link such as "Home" or "Desktop" (or any bookmark) Movie Player opens (instead of Nautilus)! This started today. I have rebooted twice, but that didn't help (no surprise--this isn't Windows).
Code:
$ cat /usr/share/applications/defaults.list
[Default Applications]
application/csv=openoffice.org-calc.desktop
application/excel=openoffice.org-calc.desktop

i have a problem with th home folder button. When I click the button from the drop down ''PLACES'' menu i get this "Error File not found'' but if i go to places>computer>home folder, then it opens. If i type in ''CWD" i get this "/home/piepie''.so the home folder does exist, and if i type /home/piepie is a directory.

My system (ubuntu studio 9.10, 32bit) was working just great. Then I installed dropbox via synaptic -- and it worked just great. Then I got some very strange behavior in how my tabs (firefox) worked, and the windows on the system would no longer respond.I restarted.... and the behavior got worse.. my menu would not show up, and when I opened dropbox -- the windows would not move, their menu(s) did not work, and I could not close them.
I tried to:
-- reinstall gnome
-- reinstall nautilus

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome as my desktop enviroment. I used Wubi to install from my laptop's default OS, Vista. I keep most of my media on the Windows partition, mostly for ease of use - such as streaming a movie through my xbox etc I would like to know if there is a way to edit the Gnome 'places' menu to have Music, Pictures etc direct to my /host/users equivalent.

For about a week or two when I try to open a folder from the menu "Places" of Gnome 2.32.0 (with Fedora 14 OS) the program Rythmbox starts instead. This happens even when I try to access a connected harddrive which requires entry of a code. After entering the code again Rythmbox opens! This doesn't happen only with "Computer", "Network" and "Connect to Server" of "Places". I can't think of anything that I did (apart from using Rythmbox quite often recently) that could have caused this, so I assume that it is a bug of Gnome. Have other people encountered this problem? (I assume that it is not Fedora specific, but rather a general problem of Gnome) If so,

I am getting ready to re-install my computer, with Fedora 14, and I was wondering if there is a way to backup the entries under "Places" because I have about 200 Mapped drives there, and I don't want to have to manually re-insert them.

On the top main menu bar, "Applications, Places, & system"..For some reason, "Places" is not working properly. I get the full drop down menu & I can click on any option there, but nothing happens.....Applications & System are both fine & working properly, it's just the Places tab that is an issue. My OS is Lucid 10.04 64bit.

I installed Ubuntu Gnome fresh yesterday. I quickly decided Unity wasn't to my taste, especially when I seemed to hose it by trying to customize my compiz settings with ccsm (don't mess with compiz if you use Unity in any way). Anywho, I retreated to standard Gnome and also installed KDE. Mostly OK, but I noticed neither of the menu editors are working properly. When I install an application from the repositories it creates a proper menu entry, but when I install a Wine application nothing appears in the menu. Attempting to edit, add, or delete menu entries with the Gnome menu editor doesn't work. Hitting the New or Properties buttons produces no effect. Using the KDE menu editor from the Classic (non-slab) menu is likewise unsatisfactory. I can add or modify entries and apparently save them but nothing appears in the menu and when I re-open the menu editor my entries are not there. I can manually create application shortcuts on the desktop or on the Gnome panel, but I can't add those to the KDE Quick Launch bar in the panel (I think that's what its called, I'm in Gnome now).

I cannot right click with my mouse on the gnome applications menu to get the properties/edit menu option. This is on F12 on 64bit.
Instead I get: "help, remove from panel, lock panel". I dont have this problem with anything else on the top bar.

I have two Xubuntu machines. On one I upgraded in place, no problem. But the other got messed up so I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 from scratch. I like the new Xubuntu, including changes they've made with this version, but...on the fresh install, the Places menu is missing (see attached).
Places is one really neat feature that my distro had the Windows doesn't; it makes/made life easier for me--I hate to see it just go away. Does anyone know how to bring it back? It doesn't seem to be available under Add New Items (to the panel).

Something very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.

I see this posted in several places in the past but no answers. If I use UUID in fstab to mount additional partitions I get duplicate entries for the partitions in the Places Menu. I can solve the problem by mounting the partitions by Label ( /dev/sdb2 /mountpoint ) but half of the time grub2 will not mount the drive correctly using this method and will change the volume ID (sdb2 becomes sdf2) .

Is it possible to edit the "Places" menu the way one can edit the "Applications" and "System" menus on gnome?
Right-clicking on the bar gives only Applications and System as editable menus. I would like to remove some items from the places menu and add others of my own liking
