I have seen numerous reports of laptops heating up and the cause has been attributed to Linux. Is this a myth or is there some reality to this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Get Sound To Work In Mplayer For Myth Tv Box

Aug 7, 2011

Im trying to get sound to work in mplayer for my myth tv box. My hardware setup is a nvidia motherboard with hdmi (not used) and a geforce 210 with hdmi (that is used). The hdmi is connect to an external amplifier that should handle most things. Sound works fine in mythtv - the audio output device used is:

ALSA:hdmi:Card=Nvidia_1,DEV=1

When I try using the command line speaker-test utility it all works:

speaker-test -Dplughw:2,7 -c6

However, aplay and mplayer both dont give any sound - with neither outputting any error messages.

Ubuntu :: HP Computer Heating Up Really Quickly For No Reason

Jun 21, 2011

I bought a new Hp Pavillion DV6T. For the most part, everything worked right out of the box with ubuntu, but the computer seems to be heating up really quickly for no reason whatsoever even if I'm not doing anything intensive. Why this is happening. The fan always seems to be running at full blast. I logged onto windows for a minute to see if there was any difference in heating between the two OSs and windows seems to run much cooler and much more quiet. On a side note I'm thinking of returning the HP and buying a dell XPS 15. I hear they are more compatible with ubuntu and are better built.

Ubuntu :: ATI Catalyst Installation - Over Heating And Battery Backup

Nov 22, 2010

To begin with i have a Sony Vaio VPCEB24EN Laptop with configuration

Intel core i3 Processor
3 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5145, 512 MB

Installation of Ubuntu 10.10 Notbook edition make my lappy extremly hot in comparison to Windows 7, which includes degrading my battery performance from 3 hours to 45 min. As my CPU uses is normal, i deduce that my Graphics might be the cause of the heat and power consumption. Tried installing proprietory drivers from Get Software -> System -> Additional Drivers, which maximized the problem. My screen keep freezing now and then. So i uninstalled the driver and downloaded ati-driver-installer-10-11-x86.x86_64.run from ati site. While install it has issue of its own. The text written in the installer is invisible. [A print screen is attached]. This is to mention that the core fonts are installed in the system. I shall be glad if anyone have the solution for my problems

1. Over heating and battery backup issue.
2. ATI catalyst font issue.

Software :: Turned Off By Itself - Suspect Over Heating?

Aug 27, 2010

I have an office workstatation that I installed with linux and ran a 8-core job. It is expected that the job to finish in 6 days but then it stopped after 2 days. The reason is that when I came to office this morning the workstation is completely turned off for some reason. Since the air-conditioner is turned off in the office overnight, I suspect the temperature is too high for the cpu. Is there a script to output the temperature to a file periodically so that I can pinpoint the exact cause of the shutdown ?

Debian Hardware :: CPU Heating On Toshiba Laptop

Apr 16, 2011

CPU fan apparently is not working with Debian (or Kernel, I don't know who's responsible for ACPI devices management. ).After setting up lm-sensors to show core temperatures, and running a simple "while(true);" C program, I noticed the fan doesn't turn on until the temperature reaches 80 degrees Celsius, and when it does, it runs at what appears to be full speed (VERY noisy). Also, it stays turned on at that speed even after temperature gets below 35 degrees Celsius. The only way to turn it off is to put the computer to sleep and wake it up again, but if I do the same procedure, it happens again.

I think it is related to some compatibility problem with ACPI devices because when I turn on the computer, I can't get the Fn keys to work, but after I suspend and wake it up, I can control the brightness using the Fn key and use the Play, Pause, etc. buttons. I read this has something to do with ACPI issues, the same as the fan control issues, because "try to suspend and wake up the computer" is something people usually tell to others with this problem (I assume just to confirm the diagnostic).Everything works fine on the pre-installed Windows Vista that came with the computer. It's definitely a compatibility problem.

I've read a lot in forums, even here, but I couldn't get any solution for this. I installed toshset but asks me to enable a Kernel module which I have no idea of how to load. I have no idea of how to load a Kernel module in fact. Also, I didn't want to believe, but I read there's no solution for this (at least, not one which doesn't involve a lot of knowledge on the matter).I'd like to stay with Debian, so I'm doing my last try here before installing other Linux Distro. I hope this problem is about Debian and not all Linux distros. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L355, Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200. I bought it in the end of 2008, so it's kind of old.

Ubuntu :: Save Power And Avoid Heating By Powering Server Off Durring Day?

Jul 5, 2010

I have a server that only runs durring the hours the house is asleep, to avoid bandwidth hogging. I know there are ways to prevent bandwidth hogging, but I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. My other goal is also to reduce power and cooling costs. My two computers between them make a very nice space heater in the winter, in summer they make it sweltering in my room.I'm sure it would be trivial to get the sever to power itself off every morning, but is it possible to get it to power itself on at bedtime? If not, I do have Wake on Lan working, is there a windows program that would allow me to send a wake on lan signal every day and then shutdown windows

Debian Configuration :: Dell Studio 1569 Heating Up And Battery Life

Feb 24, 2011

First issue is, now that I am running Debian "Squeeze", my laptop runs much hotter than before. Its definitely hot on the very bottom compared to when running Windows. Once the system begins to heat up, the fans start spinning faster, the system gets louder, etc.

Second issue is battery life. I am able to get 5 hours out of the laptop in Windows, but maybe 2.5 hours in Debian. I am assuming that these two problems go hand in hand. Now from experience with PC hardware, I know that the newer chips scale their frequency and voltage depending on demand. I don't think the computer is doing this correctly when running Linux.

By running
cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/throttling

I see that the CPU(s) are in T0 state (or 100%). Manually setting the frequency doesn't change anything either (via the gnome applet). Am I diagnosing this correctly?

Ubuntu Installation :: ASUS Netbook Heating Up When Using Netbook 10.04

Apr 30, 2010

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

Ubuntu :: Connecting 10.4 And Windows 7 Laptops?

Nov 5, 2010

I actually have two problems (which may be related). I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo La1703 and Windows 7 on a new Dell Inspiron 1545. I only have one broadband internet dongle, so I would like to share the connection (preferably via wireless ad hoc connection, but lan would work too). The dongle is run with a program that comes with it and works fine in both Windows and Ubuntu (except that the Network Manager in Ubuntu doesn't realise that there is an internet connection).

Yesterday morning I managed ONCE to make a wireless ad hoc connection and was able to use the dongle connected on the Windows machine from the Ubuntu one (using WEP security). Since I wasn't able to reproduce this I tried with a Ethernet cable. I plugged it in and and was surfing smoothly the whole evening.

This morning I couldn't connect the computers any more. Neither with nor without cable. When the cable is plugged in the Ubuntu machine recognises a connection, but fails to connect. The windows machine just says "Unidentified Network". I don't know what I did to make the connection disappear or why my laptops refuse to communicate like friends any more. I've been trying the whole day to make them kiss and make up, but they are really stubborn.

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu 10.10 Freezes On Averatec Laptops

Mar 31, 2011

I'm trying to build a system out of some old laptops for some relatives. I have two Averatec laptops a 3100 series and a 3200 series. Neither Ubuntu nor Kubuntu will install or run from the live cd without locking up solid.

Trying to install results in a complete freeze somewhere during the installation process. I've also tried the alternate cds to try and avoid a possible graphics driver problem. However, the problem doesn't seem to be X freezing. When I run the live cd instead of the install, the system freezes after a few minutes and is completely halted and must be hard rebooted. No keyboard combinations work including the alt+sysrq combinations.

I tried to get some output from the kernel log by running the live cd and then plugging in a flash drive. I then dump the contents into the flash drive (tail -f /var/log/kern.log > /media/USB DISK/kern.log). I got no error output, but maybe this is because it didn't have a chance to flush?

I've also tried locking the processor at a slower speed with no luck. These laptops do not have a processor with Cool 'n Quiet. I looked for powernowd as I found a recommendation to turn that off, but I didn't find it in the system.

It seems to be some kind of hardware incompatibility since it happens exactly the same on both laptops, but I am out of ideas.

Slackware :: 13.1 - Suspend / Resume With 2 Different Laptops

May 29, 2010

Laptop 1 is an acer aspire 5570. closing and opening the lid works a few times, after editing acpi_handler.sh, and battery life reporting is ok during this time. then, for no apparent reason, the laptop no longer responds to the lid closing, and no longer seems to be able to read the battery charge state. once this has occurred, the computer will also no longer restart, it tries a few times, with lights flashing and the hd making ugly noises. the only way to extricate the computer from this state is to pull and reinsert the battery.

Laptop 2 is a gateway nv18. suspend/resume with the lid are ok, mostly. the issure here is no display at all in x. but the computer does respond to ctrl-alt-backspace to kill x, with the command prompt returning. still not good. I'm trying a fresh install on the gateway, to see if this was just an installation glitch.
Both laptops performed flawlessly in 13 otherwise.

Slackware :: Power Management On Laptops?

Apr 17, 2010

I've got a new netbook - Dell Inspiron mini 1011. I have installed slackware 13 on it. According to dell's website its battery should last up to 9 hours:Quote:Mini 10 offers up to 9.5 hours of battery life1 to keep you on the go.I understand that it depends on a variety of factors and these are just testing estimations that will probably never be achieved IRL.For 95% of the time I don't run X on it. Just emacs (gnus), nethack, elinks. If I do run X, it's fluxbox. The average battery time is 2hrs - 2.5hrs. I understand that Slackware 13 is not designed specifically for netbooks, but 2hrs is way off the 9-hour estimation. Either the battery is faulty, or it's the power management issue. Before I deal with the battery, I'd like to ask you for some suggestions on improving the power management. The acpi and acpid are installed on the system. Are there any packages that would improve the battery performance? Or perhaps some config options?I believe that recompiling the kernel would improve it, wouldn't it? What options I'd have to set/unset?P.S.Unfortunately, once I checked the netbook is ok, I removed WinXP that came with it, so can't compare with it.
