Ubuntu Multimedia :: GT240 No Sound Via HDMI?
Nov 17, 2010I'm having a bit of trouble getting sound to work over HDMI with my GT240 card. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04) on kernel 2.6.35-23. I can get sound over HDMI by using the following commands:

However, I get no sound from normal applications (Totem, Rhythmbox, flash, etc). It's also worth noting that I can get sound from plughw:0,7, plughw:0,8 and plughw:0,9, but if I use plughw:0,3 there's no sound. I checked in alsamixer and all four channels are unmuted. I followed the instructions on this guide to get this far.

That' ok. but not all resolutions in nvidia-settings can work and show a black screen(not support). the most important is 800x600, many games need and use it as default. Jul 25, 2010I would like to get the sound to work over HDMI on my Nvidia GT240 in Debian testing.

I either need kernel 2.6.34 with the snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi module or alsa 1.0.23. I once had this setup working in ubuntu via a alsa upgrade script, but any audio would cause xorg cpu utilization to sky rocket and the system to crawl...hopefully i can work through this eventually in debian.
How should i go about getting this to work? go to the newer kernel or newer version of alsa? how should i go about installing the newer version of alsa? also i am somewhat confused about the current alsa packages that are listed on packages.debian.org. it appears that testing should already have 1.0.23? so why do i have 1.0.21? Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVIDIA Geforce GT240 10.04 - Maximize Video Cards Capabilities?
May 6, 2010I recently upgraded to Lucid from Karmic and shortly before the release upgraded from a geforce 8400gs to my geforce GT240 and noticed no difference on Karmic. I read somewhere that the capability of video cards would be applied further with Lucid. Since installing Lucid I've noticed a severely reduced sharpness and severely increased contrast, changing the contrast in X server has no effect. My hardware driver is activated but not in use and no online fix I've attempted has been successful in resolving the issue. Is it possible to use a gt240 on lucid with no hassle and is there any way I can maximize my video cards capabilities?

Nov 3, 2010I have background in ArchLinux though, and have successfully installed, configured and used it on one workstation and two laptops. owever, i just got a new PC and spent several days trying to get Arch to run on it. Finally, i decided that i don't want to spend my time on this anymore and thought that maybe it's a sign i should try other distros (even though theoretically Linux is Linux is Linux), and Debian has always been appealing to me.
So my question is, has anybody had any experience (or issues) running Debian on the hardware mentioned above? I'm actually contemplating Ubuntu already, because there's a chance it will spare me some time and configure everything by itself, but the pride of a person who used to configure Linux from scratch doesn't let me switch to Ubuntu yet

sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?

Jan 12, 2011I am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card.When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

Oct 16, 2010Toward the end of installing Ubuntu 10.10 32bit (Alt CD) on my iMac 11,1, the installer asked me to type in the location for installing the grub boot loader.
I told it to use /dev/sda3 and it immediately failed. I'm still in the installer. Can anyone suggest a solution?

I've tried installing the GNOME live CD both from a CD and a USB but after I select installation it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then the screen goes black and it stays like that till I reboot. Is it a problem with my hardware or something or did something miss-write when I burned the CD/USB?

I cannot find a .deb of it, so downloaded the tar.gz but the stock install doesnt have a compiler. I could download and copy over a compiler, but I'm guessing I'm going to be here hours copying over each dependancy that I come across (I'm guessing there may be a few) how I can tether my iPhone or how I can install blueman? Mar 19, 2011What is the easiest and/or safest way to migrate my Wubi 10.04 install to a full install? Currently, my Dell XPS M1530 is currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've decided after using Windows a total of around 4 hours over the past 6 months that I can probably let it go. So, I don't need Windows anymore and I believe I'm ready for a full install of Ubuntu. Though, I probably will wait for 11.04 to come out first.
A few ways I've thought of already are: 1) Find an external hard drive to put the Wubi files on. 2) Upload files to an storage website. 3) Temporarily put the Wubi files onto another computer (Windows). All these meaning I would then wipe my harddrive and install Ubuntu from a CD. And by "files", I mean Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc.
EDIT: deleting all my applications, because OpenOffice.org won't reinstall on my computer due to dependency issues while attempting to install LibreOffice. So a fresh install would be nice.

So, I decided to pick up a new disc, slap windows 7 on it and now want to dual boot.Basically I had to do some disc juggling to get windows to play nice. So my windows drive is now first, then my Ubuntu drive second.Its been a while so I'm wondering how involved / what would be the steps to get grub2 to chainload into windows7 (in my head I want to say I'm going to boot into the live cd, mount the windows disc and reinstall the loader to the windows drive since its the first disc in the chain?)

The installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software.
