View 2 RepliesThis problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

I shut down my laptop, which is running Ubuntu 9.10, without any problems. When I got home and tried to boot it, it finishes the POST and then I get a blank screen with a cursor for a few seconds. The word "GRUB" then appears in the upper left hand corner and that's it. The system is hung and I have to power off.
I've seen a lot of discussion that 9.10 uses grub2. Any ideas how I get out of this? Do I need to downgrade to legacy grub?
I dual boot Ubuntu with Windows, so every time I turn on my computer, I have to choose a system.
I rarely use Windows, but I still need it on here for some applications. Being that I'm going to be using Ubuntu 90% of the time, I was wondering if there was a way to boot directly to Ubuntu without erasing Windows.
Is this possible? I'd want to be able to press a key at start up or something so I can still use Windows if I want to.
If that's not possible, how do I edit the boot screen so instead of 14 seconds (or whatever it is), it boots Ubuntu in one or two seconds?
So, today I've installed a new splash screen:
Code:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/AzenisBuntu+plymouth+themes?content=138960
And after the burg screen (yes, I have burg installed too) and some other stuff while booting, the splash screen only appears like 2 seconds before the login screen.
Is there any way I can make it last longer?
i'm running ubuntu (32bit) on a quad core compaq presario with 3.9gb of ram and a 500gb HDD.sometimes when i have few windows open (nautilus, firefox) and i'm watching a movie the hard drive will spin up for no reason and everything on screen will hang for a few seconds.i did a hard drive check and everything seems to be ok there. i have a geforce 8600 gt with the recommended 185 driver installed.i'm wondering what the problem is? could it be hardware?
i've noticed this is happening from time to time, no matter what i'm doing. First the computer beeps then the hard drive speeds up and everything lags.
I use a T410 with lucid LTS 32 bit and win 7 (which is rarely used). Till last night, GRUB would load up 5 seconds after the Lenovo welcome screen.
This morning onwards it takes exactly 90 seconds. i've tried rebooting several times - exactly 90 seconds.
Well this problem has been here since Lucid. When I start up my computer and select Ubuntu, I get a blinking underscore for about most of the start up time for Ubuntu. Then It quickly shows the nice Ubuntu Loading Screen (Plymouth) for about two seconds, then it gets to the login screen. I am using the Open Source ATI drivers, I believe the open drivers are called "radeon".
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed linux mint a couple of days ago and everything went great but now the grub screen takes about 20 seconds to a minute to load. It's not a huge issue but kind of annoying since the one that ubuntu installed took a second and I was at the menu. I imagine that it has to do with the background picture but i'm not sure if that would slow it down that much.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like your input on this. A toshiba laptop screen goes blank after few seconds(from turning on).
At first i thought it was fan that was out and once it got hot enough it cut the laptop off like my old Acer did.
But after close examination i noticed that it continues working. HD still spining and fan blows..
Example: Turn on>Hit F2 to go in to Bios> Bios screen appears>Before i have a chance to do anything it geos blank but continues working> I hit Cntrl ALt Del> it resets and screen comes right back up>second later it goes blank again.
ALSO the toshiba logo and whole screen seems to have a red tint to it.
I also get a media test error but that is likely from hard drive not being there during some of the tests.
DO you think it can be an LCD Backlight issue? or possibly video card?
ive searched the forums and web for info on this but i am stumped.not unusual since i started to use linux.gparted crashes after about 3 seconds of grayed out screentime.here is my terminal readout after entering sudo gparted command.tenza@tenza-desktop:~$ sudo gparted

I have Fedora 12(Constantine) i686 installed on my PC as my O.S. i got a porblem that when i was trying to install the a bundle(NetBeans IDE 6.8 with JDK 6 update 20) after sometime my PC restarted itself due to electricity problem. When it was started i saw the icon of NetBeans IDE 6.8, then I tried to open it, but all in vain. A screen opens for a few seconds and then it disappears. I think it is the problem of improper installation. And now I m totally unable to uninstall that bundle.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOn a Karmic desktop with a Radeon 2600 hd video card, my screen goes black for a couple of seconds when opening an avi (divx or mjpeg). The video starts playing immediatly but I only see a black screen. Using Movie Player, its a black screen window, using vlc or gmplayer or mplayer ,the all screen goes black. It does not happen if I use the ati open source driver (but then flash full screen crashes...). I just installed the latest ati catalyst (10.2) and the problem remains.....
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm have much computer experience but am new to Ubuntu. I typed in sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and it tells me it's already installed. Good. So it should work. I type sudo/etc/init.d/gdm start and the screen goes blank for 8 seconds three times in a row and then back to the command line. I have also tried gdm start without the path before and it says GDM already running. Aborting!
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.
I have centos 5.3 i got the login screen but after logging shows error as-- your session only last less than 10 seconds . if you have not logged out yourself tyhis could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may out of disk space .try logging with one of fail session.

I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
I'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?
So basically, when I was using windows I got 25 second lag spikes 60 seconds inbetween eachother. Obviously this is a huge issue as I'm constantly doing things on the internet and I play a lot of games.
I used to use a program called WLAN Optimizer to kill these lag spikes, and it worked fine! However when I switched to Linux (Ubutu Natty Narwhal), I searched for hours and could find NOTHING on the subject. I tried using Playonlinux to get the program to load, but no such luck. I assume that's because it deals with advanced processes to eliminate the 25 second lag spikes. If anybody could help me get WLAN optimizer working, or simply find a work around that allows me to fix the lag, I would very VERY greatly appreciate it.
Otherwise I'm going to have switch back to vista, and I REALLY don't want to do that. I thought my comp was fried until I installed this OS because of Vista.
About two weeks ago I installed ubuntu 9.10 desktop with a dualboot to my windows 7, which was already on there. everything went fine, but I couldn't configure my wireless to work, so after a few days I gave it a rest and basically forgot about; I just stuck with windows. anyways, yesterday night I installed a program called solidworks on my system. I woke up this morning, turned on my computer, and this is what happened-
it turns on for about 5 seconds, but when it hits "grub loading", after about half a second it restarts. it's basically an infinite loop, until i throw in a cd or hit f8, but I don't know what to do with either of those options, so I'm kind of stuck.
I'm posting this in the ubuntu forums because I have NO idea what's wrong with it, and no idea of where to start. I've got both installation disks, but I don't know what to do when I put them in. I've got an intel pentium 4 processor, and like i said, i've got a dualboot with windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10.
1. while playing any video file in VLC or any other player, i try to fullscreen or back to normal then the VLC just stopped for 5-7 seconds, video is running but in the screen it does not show running just sound comes.
2. while i open firefox or maximize it from clicking on taskbar, it take time similar thing the nautilus do when its going to maximize.
i don't know what the problem is, sometimes i feel it is because of compiz and emerald effact, but when i was ubuntu8.10 user, there was not such problem, it runs smooth.
I'm using a MacBook 2.1 with Lucid.
After i hit Enter in GRUB, there is a message on top of the screen saying "booting up", and it stays there for 20 to 30 seconds. Then everything proceeds normally. I think i caught a message saying that something couldn't be found, but it flashed too rapidly.
Here is an extract of my dmesg. I'm assuming the part between [] is timestamps, and it takes about 40 seconds to go from GRUB to the Login screen, so it fits. Nothing is happening during 32 seconds.

Sometimes while using Open Office, trying to open a file the dialog box takes 15 to 30 seconds of spinning balls until it shows me anything. Then changing a directory takes another 15 to 30 seconds. Visual feedback on selections take several seconds, and often I find myself a couple of subdirectories down from where I wanted to go due to caching of unacknowledged clicks.
My system is usually very, very fast, as one would expect from the specs. This problem happened, well, almost all the time with kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, now it just started happening again with 2.6.32-22-generic.During these slowdowns, opening Dolphin reveals the same problem, exceedingly slow response. While this is happening, top shows the system is not busy, and the hard disk light is not flashing. Idle is over 90% and user and sys are basically nothing. The system is basically doing nothing while making me wait.
I am looking to speed up my boot time; it is currently around the 2-2.5 minute mark from Grub to desktop (including about 15 seconds at the login screen while I type my password).
I have forced ureadahead to reprofile, and have rebooted a few times until the boot time is fairly stable/consistent.
No xorg errors and only one warning ((WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" does not exist.)
However, dmesg reports the following:
Code:

I decided to install ubuntu again and downloaded 10.04. I had some issues installing with the desktop version, but everything installed fine with the alternate version. Now if I want to log in (on the KDE login-screen) the KDE-loading-symbols show up just as they are supposed to do, the desktop shows up (I can see "Desktop Folder and uBlog) and suddenly the mouse/system freezes. Neither Ctrl-Alt-Del isn't working nor Ctrl-Alt-F2 gives any response, all I can do is to reset my computer.
When I use Gnome as a desktop enviroment the computer totally freezes at the login-screen, without giving me any chance of logging in. Things I already tried: noapic, nomodeset, noacpi settings when booting, I successfully installed the latest ATI-Driver for my 3870, I disabled compiz. The kdm log says that there's some problem with an i-bus-daemon. Disabling/restarting the daemon has no effect on the behavior of my installation.
I want to use a cronjob to start a script running streamripper to record radioshows when I'm not at home. I'm running 10.04 server 32 bit.
I've setup a cronjob via Webmin to start the recording. It runs the following script:
Code:
ORDNER=`date +%Y"_"%m"_"%d"-"%H"_"%M"(FM4)"` # 'ORDNER' means Folder and creates a folder with time/date to save the stream
streamripper http://mp3stream1.apasf.apa.at:8000/ -d /mnt/Samsung/Radio/$ORDNER --xs_padding=2000:500 -a -q -s
[Code]....
Is there any logfile or way to see why the script is killed or what stops the recording? When executing the script manually the recording runs just fine until I kill the process.
I know this is the kind of vague post that people hate. But I'm having a problem. Every now and then (several times a day), my computer stops responding for several seconds.
I notice it most in Firefox. If I'm typing information in a form (like this one) on a web page, everything just stops. If I keep typing, the text eventually appears, apparently having been stored in a keyboard buffer.
But it's not just in Firefox. I have had the same problem in OpenOffice applications. Things just stop. The computer apears to "think" for several seconds, and then things continue.
After several seconds, everything is okay. So some people may say that this is normal. And while I'm no guru, I have been around computers for a long time, so I remember back in the day when this happened all the time. But I haven't seen it (at least to this extent) in previous versions of Ubuntu (or in Windows).
It's a serious problem.
what I should look at? I have a feeling that there is some setting somewhere (cache, etc.) that is set wrong.
Almost every day, for around 15-20 seconds, my computer becomes unresponsive, while the hard disk makes a strange periodic sound (period ~2 seconds, half of it the sound suggests very intense disk activity, the other half - normal disk activity), and the hard disk LED stays on (not flashing, just on). I ran manually all scripts in the /etc/cron.* folders. Only the mlocate script seemed to cause higher than normal disk activity (but still low enough to not cause problems). I still disabled it, but the problem persists.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got three user accounts, 10.10 running on eeepc. Two of them work relatively well, but the on the third one firefox keeps crushing every 10 seconds or to be more precise every 2~3 link clicks.
There is a firefox crash info but no specific problem is being suggested. Same goes for terminal - clear.
Doesn't matter if I delete the 'old' third user and put new one. FF behaves always the same on fresh account. It also affects minefield.
I'm having a hard time with my xfce netbook. Yesterday i was adding Tomboy note to my startup applications and i don't know why but since that i'm having a 50 seconds delay between the time i see my wallpaper and icons and the time my startup applications start to load. In this delay my CPU is stable and don't work at all.
Xfce is on my girlfriend netbook too and it seems that we have the same configurations when i look in "session and startup".
