Ubuntu :: Get The Option To Boot - Installed On System?
Oct 16, 2010
Here is the log for what I have already done: Downloaded ubuntu.iso for my 64bit Sony Vaio Burned DVD System showed 2 option Windows 7 and Ubuntu (to boot from DVD) Booted to live Ubuntu from DVD (using option 2)Installed Ubuntu along with my existing Windows 7 After installing Ubuntu, system is still showing 2 options viz. Windows 7 and Ubuntu. On taking option 2 (Ununtu)...it says Not able to find a media with live boot... I think it is pointing to my DVD drive. How can I get the option to boot to Ubuntu installed on my system?

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix on an acer Aspire One D250, specs below: Processor Name: Intel Atom N270
Processor Speed: 1.6 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Graphics Card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Storage Capacity: 160 GB
I had to resize the win partition, making a new partition for Ubuntu of about 15GB. I then installed the system. Everything went without problems. I was able to boot once, and verified that everything worked as intented.
However, after that, 90% of the times I reboot the bootup process hangs at a blank screen (with a blinking underscore), immediately after grub selection. If I select "recovery mode" in grub I can see the bootup messages, but the process hangs, all except one time, right after:
Code:
[2.304418] ata2: DUMMY
[2.304487] ata3: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m1024@0x58344000 port 0x58344200 irq28
[2.304584] ata4: DUMMY
and does nothing more. There are no error messages or hints to the source of the problem, to my eyes.I've noticed that sometimes even the loading screen of the live cd will hang indefinitely, leaving me no choice other than a hard-reboot.
The rare times that the system does boot normally, everything works normally. I've tried installing using both the ext4 and ext3 filesystems. I couldn't find anything like this on the forums. Am I doing something wrong? Do you need more details?

My system won't boot unless I have 2 sata drives. It doesn't matter what's on the second one. It even boots if the second "disk" is a powered sata to IDE adapter attached to an unpowered IDE drive. If I don't have the second drive I get this when I try to boot:
Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/ ...<your UUID>.... does not exist,I don't see anything that seems odd to me in my /etc/fstab file.
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0[code]....
I've done the whole use a live disk, chroot into my system and reinstall the kernel to no avail. uname -r gives -- 2.6.32-28-generic

There was an option in openSUSE about booting an installed system if grub is deleted from the MBR. This option is no longer available and there is no option for automatic recovery. For these reasons, I want to boot an installed system from command line. I know how to mount the root partition where openSUSE 11.3 is installed, but how to proceed?

I have an Acer Aspire One and I would like to boot from an SCHD card installed into the system Expansion port. It works fine when used in a USB stick. When I check the boot order the expansion port is not listed as an option. There is an option for doing a network expansion. Are there any bios updates that would read that port on startup?

I'm trying to install opensuse 11.4 but I got this error:
"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entierly below 128 gb. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24(result is error 18 during install grub MBR)"
What should I do before click next step to install? I installed opensuse with this error and some times opensuse can boot and some not. At least I was able to boot safemode.

New Linux/Ubuntu user here. Have a slight problem:
Version: UNR/Gnome 10.0.4 LTS
I removed Evolution and replaced it with Thunderbird. I no longer have the option within the white envelope in the panel for compose mail, etc. I really liked this function but it appears to me to have been an Evolution specific function. How to make this work for Thunderbird?

I am attempting to try install XUbuntu.
I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.
My system details are:
HP compaqnx9000
Mobile Intel Pentium(R) 4-m CPU 2.20 GHz 219GHz 704MB RAM
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7580A
Radeon 1GP 340M

Is there a flag or option to discard case sensitivity to find whether package is installed or not?
from http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/s1-rpm-query-parts.html
Quote:
Note, however, that RPM is a bit picky about specifying package names. Here are some queries for the C library that won't work:
Code:
rpm -q libc-5.2.1
Let say I want to find out whether PyQt is installed or not but not sure the exact case, i.e. pyqt or Pyqt or ....
is there a way to find whether a package is installed or not without knowing its case exactly?

I have set up a server with Ubuntu 10.4. It always worked fine with 32-bit inside VMware. But on the production machine with 64-bit, it wasn't working well by now. I could now reliably trace the problem down to the "ubuntu-desktop" package. I have installed it (without the recommends) so all its depends are also installed. But as soon as that package is on the system, it freezes at boot time, on the page where CPU freq modules or AppArmor stuff is started. My server is an Intel Core i7, so it lists 8 CPUs for cpufreq. They're normally all listed in a line on their own, but when the system freezes here, the output is broken already. Sometimes it says that cupsd is started, or "Checking quotas", sometimes it stops after "CPU4", sometimes it prints out the lines "CPU0" to "CPU4", then "CPU7" in the same line followed by "[OK]". The system won't react on anything from then on except a hard reset.
As soon as I remove the package "ubuntu-desktop" (chrooted into the system from the rescue system), the OS on disk boots normally into the GUI logon. No problem at all anymore.
It took me a few days to figure out why it wasn't working. I first suspected quota, then a kernel upgrade. But the system booted well after each change on their own. Just as I installed all the graphical stuff, it stopped booting.
What's happening there? What am I supposed to to now? I need the desktop environment and the machine must be working by Saturday. Although the description of ubuntu-desktop says that I should not uninstall it because it's used for update management, I could now install it to get all its depends, and then immediately uninstall it to make the system boot up again. Is that a good idea? Shouldn't it be working without such hacks?

I've set up a triple boot system (Ubuntu Karmic, Windows Vista and OSX86 -- a patched OS X which works on a PC) on a Dell 9200 (C2D 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia G210). I sue Grub2 as the bootloader and update-grub picks up OS X and it boots without any problem.
However, although when booting OS X using its own Darwin bootloader, I can apply the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" to ensure that I get the screen resolution that I want, when OS X boots from Grub2, the only resolution available is 1024x768 which is disappointing. I have tried adding gfxmode=1650x1050x32 to the OS X section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in Ubuntu but this does nothing.

we have a server running with Suse linux many years. Meanwhile we changed server hardware about 4 times, mostly also updating to newest Suse version. We used to copy group, passwd and shadow to a backup medium, installed the new system and restored those files onto the new system and all was running fine. Now, some weeks ago we installed 11. on new hardware and after restoring those 3 files after rebooting the system hangs when starting GUI. I can boot into runlevel 3 and login with no problem, but when I boot into runlevel 5 mouse and keyboard are frozen. Also when starting GUI from runlevel 3 with startx mouse and keyboard immediately freeze. If I restore the files group, passwd and shadow as they came from fresh new installation I can reboot and login in runlevel 5 without problems.
OK, if I compare the userlist, as it is generated bei installation, there are some usernames I formerly not had in older Suse versions. I dont know if this can make problems? I tried to edit the files, to combine the system users from 11.2 with the list of local user names from the old system but without success, again the mouse and keyboard freeze. So some questions arise:1) Why now mouse and keyboard freeze in xsystem, when there are changes in the user list (but only in runlevel 5)2) What is the correct way to save and restore users and groups from old to new system. I googled several hours but did not find a smart way. Maybee someon can point me to a link or a howto where I find the solution

I have a 64 bit system on which I am trying to install Linux. I installed Ubuntu but it does not have a dialup option and since I live in a rural area I only have access to dialup at this time.
Does anyone know of a 64 bit operating system which contains dialup capability? I have tried reading about the various distros but have been unable to find any which indicate they work with dialup.

I would like to make a bootable Ubuntu system on a USB stick from a full install, so I can update the packages/kernel etc, and I would also like to have the ability to Install ubuntu from the USB stick onto other computers. What package allows you to run the installer that is found on the LiveCD?
Also, is it possible to have a Ubuntu installer that uses updated packages rather than the LiveCD so they are current when installed rather than the release packages to save on the download/updating time?

I use the Futura font as my application/desktop/titlebars font, and I think it looks beautiful. However, its bold version is much too dark for my liking and it really spoils the look of my desktop when it's used in applications (Nautilus' sidebar and Libre Office's menubar are the main offenders), and what I would much rather is if the system would use Futura's heavy weight option instead of bold, but after searching gconf and for configuration files I can't work out where or how I would do this.

I have an HTPC that dual boots Ubuntu 9.10 (upgraded from 9.04, so still using GRUB 1.x) and Windows (for Netflix duties). I recently rebooted the machine to watch some Netflix movies, only to discover that the GRUB menu no longer has an option to boot Windows.I imagine that this could have happened after an apt-get upgrade installing a new kernel; it has been a while since I rebooted the machine and could have missed it.

recover ubuntu 10.04
restore factory default settings of your Toshiba machine
but no option to boot into windows, I can still access all my files and settings from within Ubuntu, so i haven't overwritten Windows

I installed Jolicloud in a new partition to give it a try. It's pretty nice. Anyway, it took over my bootloader, which didn't really bother me.
Now my kernel has automatically been updated to 2.6.35-22.41 or something. The option to boot from the new kernel does not appear. As you might imagine, I want to do that. My old bootloader updated this stuff automatically.
