I have an HTPC that dual boots Ubuntu 9.10 (upgraded from 9.04, so still using GRUB 1.x) and Windows (for Netflix duties). I recently rebooted the machine to watch some Netflix movies, only to discover that the GRUB menu no longer has an option to boot Windows.I imagine that this could have happened after an apt-get upgrade installing a new kernel; it has been a while since I rebooted the machine and could have missed it.

When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
I've just installed 10.04 and its the best distribution i've seen yet! But I can no longer switch between windows and ubuntu like I have in previous installs. I get the normal boot screen options which are something along the lines off.

Was running my new Ubuntu 10.10 build alongside my original Windows 7 partition, but now the Windows 7 boot option has disappeared following a trip to the update manager Tried the Update Grub2 command to no avail. (e.g. sudo update-grub) What is weird is that I now have two Ubuntu boot options i.e.

What do I change to get Ubuntu option back? OH, I also had to do a checkpoint restore prior to that but it was after I had installed Ubunto (I think). Which leads me to ask....how do I identify the Ubuntu disk space I allocated at install time? I can't seem to find it.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop which also have windows xp installed. After the installation I could boot to both Ubuntu and Windows. I then installed some updates from the update manager in Ubuntu 10.10 and after this the windows option in the grub boot menu is gone. The boot_info_script055.sh returned the following result

Here's the short version of what happened
--Had windows 7 and installed Ubuntu dual boot
--all was well but after some messing around with a failed Backtrack install I had to repartition some things to clean it up
--The partition where Backtrack was installed was corrupt so I deleted it and extended my Ubuntu partition.
--reload got the no such partition rescue grub
--read threw a bunch of forums and could only seem to find mostly threads on only being able to load Ubuntu and not Windows. Most having to do with post OS install problems and not re partitioning.
--I decided the best thread to follow was [url]
--after that my memory of events is a bit fuzzy, a lot was going on. In short I got a message in the terminal saying "this is a BAD idea" and something about another MBR. (sorry I cant be more specific)
--reading on I decided I would try my windows bootloader restore
--now windows loads up fine but it doesn't even give me an option to boot Ubuntu. I launched a live CD and checked GParted. The partition is still there.
Sorry if this is threaded somewhere already, I know that annoying. I'm just burnt out on combing forums and broke down and decided to ask directly
I want to install Ubunto netbook on my compaq mini 730, but I want to keep my windows xp OS as well and have the dual boot option. At the moment I have the hard drive partitioned to C and D. My question is - what is the best way to install ubuntu and keep windows ? Should I create a separate partition for it ? if yes what size ? Can Ubunto install itself on C next to windows automatically ?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI unplugged the Windows drive, during the installation of Ubuntu 9 (to make things easier). 2 separate drives. When installation was complete, I plugged the other drive back in (now both are plugged in). I went to the BIOS and made sure the Linux drive was the set to boot before the windows drive. The only thing that comes before that of course is the cd drive

I booted into linux after this and ran 'sudo update-grub'. The cmd was successful. However, when rebooting it does not give me the option to boot to windows. Why not? PS. If I go to Places (under GNOME bar), Then I can see (and mount) the windows drive. So it is accessible.

I worked hard at convincing her to switch to the simplest Linux available imho, an Ubuntu, latest edition.She tried it, worked fine, was happy.Thenstarted to kernel update.It destroyed the 'boot on Windows' option I had setup, making it a daily pain for her husband to get on his Windows. I need not insist on the fact that Linux won't ever be back on that computer, because Ubuntu's update scripts can't do something as simple as check if Windows is the primary boot

I've installed Lubuntu alongside my existing Windows XP installation. The menu came up on boot allowing me to boot into either Lubuntu or XP. But, after I install all the Lubuntu updates and restart, the option to boot into XP is gone. The boot menu comes up, but no XP option. I reinstalled Lubuntu again with the same results: after the updates, no XP option. I'm thinking I will reinstall Lubuntu again, and before I run the updates, I will make a copy of grub.cfg for later reference so I can add the XP section in again- am I on the right track here?

I use Ubuntu 95% of the time though and so the machine has an option at boot for what OS I want to go into. Does anyone know if I boot up with the Windows disc in and choose the repair option if it will screw up my boot options and I potentially lose my ability to boot into Ubuntu?
View 1 Replies View Relatedjust recently, while attempting to boot to windows 7, i happened to select the wrong boot option by mistake, that is the windows 7 recovery (something like that, cant remember it specifically, but the word 'recovery' is there). the option has been there eversince i installed ubuntu 11.04 on my system, of which i cant find the answer as to why it existed there. so once i selected it (which was by mistake), it took me into some recovery process which i abandoned as quickly. it restarted and the windows 7 option was no longer there. the windows 7 recovery option, however, is still there. How to get my windows 7 boot option back?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot system with Windows XP very carefully. Unfortunately, though given the option to boot Windows at the grub menu, when I select it, I get an error. Booting Ubuntu on my other partition works just fine, no issues.
I also attempted to access files from the first partition in Ubuntu using gparted, but once I mounted it, all of my files were not present. I only saw manufacturer files, and many files and folders I didn't recognize.
Also, as an aside, my laptop monitor is suffering from occasional black-outs during use. Ubuntu gave me a little toolbar flag, telling me to go to a website and use the patches given to fix it, but I'm not quite so sure where to input the given patch text. Do I really need to go through the trouble of finding the source code, etc., or is it more simple?
I already had windows installed on the c drive so linux suse 11.2 has been installed onto d. There was a problem after I finished the install - after I rebooted no menu appeared, the pc just hung on a black screen with flashing cursor, so I put the linux DVD in again and rain a repair. It repaired the boot menu but now there is no option to boot into windows.

It turns out the installation disc does not give you the option to replace a current Ubuntu installation so I was forced to take more space out of my windows [vista] installation. This means I now have 1 ruined Lucid Ubuntu OS, 1 Working Lucid Ubuntu OS and a windows Vista OS system. Is it safe to delete my ruined Ubuntu from inside vista? Is it possible to overwrite my Ubuntu installations? How can I delete them both and then install Lucid again?
I want to know this now as Maverick Meerkat will be released on Sunday and I want to install that in a clean installation without deleting my vista installation. I do not have the Vista installation disc because Vista came pre-installed. I am not willing to buy anything.

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.
Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

I am attempting to try install XUbuntu.
I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.
My system details are:

I've set up a triple boot system (Ubuntu Karmic, Windows Vista and OSX86 -- a patched OS X which works on a PC) on a Dell 9200 (C2D 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia G210). I sue Grub2 as the bootloader and update-grub picks up OS X and it boots without any problem.
However, although when booting OS X using its own Darwin bootloader, I can apply the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" to ensure that I get the screen resolution that I want, when OS X boots from Grub2, the only resolution available is 1024x768 which is disappointing. I have tried adding gfxmode=1650x1050x32 to the OS X section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in Ubuntu but this does nothing.
Not sure how to explain so I'll jump right in, in 2 weeks i have to install windows for a class I'm taking, i've got a partition on my first HDD for this, i also have a partition on it for ubuntu, and one for storage. Windows 7 is installed on another HDD, and has its own partition there. Because I am going to be moving the drive with ubuntu 2 times a week, and I won't always have it,I want to leave my boot intact, and have my windows 7 boot menu show ubuntu as a choice, which then shows grub or w/e. grub is intact atm, but to get to ubuntu I have to reboot and unplug all my other drives, this gets old.
Neither OS knows of the other, i installed windows first, a month or 2 ago, then to make sure i didn't interfere with my main drive i unplugged it for the install of ubuntu. i assumed it would be as simple as opening a boot.ini file, copying the windows entry, and changing the hard drive to 0,2 but I've learned that windows 7 doesn't have such a file
My unit does not have internal DVD capability so I installed an external Sony that XP recognizes but ubuntu does not. I am 910 is that makes a difference.

Somehow, the cups daemon wasn't running, but I fixed that by downgrading (sic) libgcrypt11.
I've tried both the samba and the samba4 packages.
Since before I started worrying about this, I got an error message while booting up that the winbind daemon had failed to load. I've tried reinstalling it, but that hasn't done anything.
