Ubuntu :: Force A Startup Application To Open In A Minimized State?
Jan 30, 2011
In my case I have TeamViewer 6 (remote desktop application) opening as one of my Startup applications. I only really need it to run in the background, so I don't need it in my face after logging in.
What I'm looking for is a command line option for opening an application in a minimized state. Is this possible? Or should I start looking into a script to find the window and minimize it?

Isn't it possible to create a launcher to an application and in the command tell it to start minimzed?
Something like
vlc --minimize
Or something similar? this would be helpful to application on startup not crowding your desktop on login.

When I minimize the applications, the icons do not appear in the taskbar. Why is that so? It was OK in centos5.3. I believe I may have missed out some configurations.

I know it sounds a bit strange, but is there something that I can add to a start up command to make the program that is starting up be minimized. I know it sounds strange, but I want to have Evolution Mail open at start up, but be minimized. I know the command to open Evolution Mail is "evolution --component=mail" but how would I make the window starts out being minimized in the Launcher.

1. Is there a command option to launch an application minimized?
i.e. in terminal
firefox -minimized [URL]
That opens firefox but does not minimize...
2. Also, is there a command option to add the application to the system tray?

Anytime I open a window and then minimize it-poof it's gone! for instance when I minimize firefox or just about any other app it just disappears instead of landing into the panel as it usually does when minimized. Is this a KDE problem? I just tried to upgrade to 11.2/KDE on the net (that was a mistake.) I finally installed from Downloaded DVD (install version) and crawled back from upgrade hell.

I am running a week old 11.3 install with KDE (no desktop effects), compiz, nvidia. Last night I was working away. I had Thundertbird, Firefox, and VMWare Workstation open. Maybe something else, but I don't remember.
I was typing away. Maybe I hit something on the keyboard, but maybe not. All apps just disappeared, meaning that they're windows were not open and were not minimized to the panel. I could open *new* windows, and I fire up a terminal and ran top, which showed that they were all running, just not visible. Obviously, this is a Bad Thing.

I often run calculations on my Linux computer, which cause my X server to crash from time to time. Almost always, some programs seem to survive to the crash and are in an interruptible sleeping state, for example:29315 ? Sl 54:35 /home/kashim/Desktop/anylogic/anylogic -vmargs -Xmx1024MIs there a way to reconnect these applications with the new X server?

I recently started using Ubuntu 11.04. Everything works fine with my monitor directly connected to the computer. I get a default screen resoluton of 1680 x 1050, which is just fine.
However, when I connect the screen through a video splitter to be able to use a beamer, the screen resolution defaults to 1024x768. Moreover, Ubuntu then detects an unknown monitor and I cannot select a higher resolution.
I searched for modifications of xrandr en xorg.conf but I have to admit I don't understand what I've read. So my question remains: how can I force Ubuntu 11.04 to start with a screen resololution of 1680 x 1050 (without first connecting monitor only, that is).
I hereby add some information I retrieved with the screen connected without the splitter, so you can see what hardware is involved.
Code:
dirk@LaboFysica:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA1 connected 1680x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 474mm x 296mm
1680x1050 60.0*+
1280x1024 75.0 60.0
[Code].....

I just downloaded Thunderbird 3.1.4 and I think I found a security hole.
Whenever I open Thunderbird, it does not ask me to authenticate my account (not asking for a password)
Is this a bug/security hole or something?
How can I force Thunderbird to ask me for my gmail password at startup?
Oh!!! and where can I report this security hole?

I started using Ubuntu 11.04 today.
Everything works fine with my monitor directly connected to the computer. I get a default screen resoluton of 1600 x 1280, which is just fine.
However, when I connect the screen through a video splitter to be able to use a beamer, the screen resolution defaults to 1024x768. Moreover, Ubuntu then detects an unknown monitor.
I recall that I have solved this problem before with an older version of Ubuntu.
Now it seems that there is no xorg.conf anymore so I don't know what to do.
How can I force Ubuntu 11.04 to start with a screen resololution of 1600 x 1280.

concerning controlling the windows in virtual desktop.
a) Say to a application to be launched to virtual desktop 2 for example.
b) How can you ask from a virtual application to be only visible at one virtual desktop. For example I work on virtual desktop 6 and I want to start skype that should be on virtual desktop 2. Right now If I launch the app on virtual desktop 6 it will appear on the same one. Would it be possible to ask for an applicaiton to be launched on an other virtual desktop. If yew how?

I am trying out chrony as a replacement for openntpd as there is no longer an openntpd package in Debian Squeeze. Two questions:
1. Is there a necessity or equivalent to openntpd's "-s" option, where it forces the system's clock to the network time on daemon startup, regardless on how great the clock is off?
2. How do you configure as a client only, not as an ntp server at all? By default, it listens on UDP 123 and 323 (both ipv4 and ipv6) and definitely acts as a network time server (I can query remotely). I do not see anything obvious in the docs. Openntpd by default ran as a client daemon only.

When checking emails, many will be notifications from forum threads or other internet links. I have noticed it is very inconsistent in the way it opens them. Sometimes the browser will stay in the background so I can keep reading the emails and keep clicking on the links for reading in the browser afterwards. Other times the browser will jump to the front with every link so I have to keep switching back to Evo.
And other times it's a mix of both, seems completely random.

Firefox keeps trying to download docx files with my default text editor. Is there a way to get Firefox to just open everything using xdg-open?
There seems to be no way to get this browser to consistently open files with my chosen default applications. My mime-type settings are only obeyed sometimes. The pertinent file type isn't in the Application list of browser preferences, and there's no way to add it. The "Do this automatically..." option in the file download dialog is greyed out, so I have to go through my file system and choose the desired application every time I download a file of that type.

When a new instance of a running KDE 4 application (kwrite, konqueror, etc.) is run under opensuse 11.4 with KDE4 it seems that the default behaviour is to open a new tab in the running instance.
This occurs when the new instance is called from the command line; the start menu; the run dialogue; or a desktop icon, even when called from a separate desktop. In konqueror the menu option <File> <new window> opens a new tab and seems redundant.
How can a user force KDE 4 applications to run a new instance in a separate frame / window when another instance of that application is already running?

I would like to get the predefined application icon to open the same file types.
for instance: *.avi, *.mp3 to have the VLC icon
and other application to have the icon of their default application.
So far I only found tips to install single icons or to add icon packs. :S
and is there any way to when you install an application make it default for such file types ?

I've got a ~/.Xdefaults that has a specific color theme defined for Xorg, and this works. I've got a ~/.XdefaultsNew that specifies an alternate color theme. Xorg starts and loads ~/.Xdefaults which is correct. After running some applications, I run
xrdb ~/.XdefaultsNew
This overrides all my X resources to the new defined values (correctly). If I open a new window, the theme is seen correctly. However, all the previously opened windows retain the original theme. Is there a way to force X to "re-theme" all windows it is managing with the currently loaded X resources?

how to get Vuz installed properly and running, however I would like to make it start the gui interface automatically on login/startup and minimized. I tried adding it to the SYSTEM->PREFERENCES->STARTUP APPLICATIONS as that seemed the obvious way to do it, however it does not startup automatically after I restart the system.
I am running:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Java 1.6.0_18
Sun Microsystems Inc.
SWT v3555, gtk
Linux v2.6.32-23-generic, i386
Vuze V4.3.0.6/4 az3

I am running Unbuntu 10.10 on a HTPC, and also XBMC. With some effort it worked ok, sounds, remote etc. Via systems>preferences I managed to add XBMC to the startup. It now starts when I start the PC. However it sort-of hijacks the PC, so the WiFi does not start among other things. Also I am no longer able to log into the desktop, so I am not able to emove XBMC from the start-up of the computer. If I exit XBMC I get to the log-in screen for the desktop, but when I log in it starts XBMC directly.
How can I remove it via the terminal? I cannot find a .config directory, any autostart, any .xsession, .xinitrc or anything else that looks like startup-script. How can I get access to my desktop again?
