I have my desktop displayed on two monitors. I have a chat application that opens a separate dialog window when I click on a contact.But this new window does not open on the same monitor as the contact list window.Is there a way to force all child windows to open on the same monitor as their parent?

What I'm looking for is a command line option for opening an application in a minimized state. Is this possible? Or should I start looking into a script to find the window and minimize it?
I have been messing about with my themes lately and was wondering if it was possible to force the title of a window to display on the right side and have the buttons on the right. I'm already aware of using gconf-edit to change the order and position of the buttons but I can't seem to figure out how to move the title.

Everything works fine with my monitor directly connected to the computer. I get a default screen resoluton of 1600 x 1280, which is just fine.
However, when I connect the screen through a video splitter to be able to use a beamer, the screen resolution defaults to 1024x768. Moreover, Ubuntu then detects an unknown monitor.
I recall that I have solved this problem before with an older version of Ubuntu.
Now it seems that there is no xorg.conf anymore so I don't know what to do.
How can I force Ubuntu 11.04 to start with a screen resololution of 1600 x 1280.
concerning controlling the windows in virtual desktop.
a) Say to a application to be launched to virtual desktop 2 for example.
b) How can you ask from a virtual application to be only visible at one virtual desktop. For example I work on virtual desktop 6 and I want to start skype that should be on virtual desktop 2. Right now If I launch the app on virtual desktop 6 it will appear on the same one. Would it be possible to ask for an applicaiton to be launched on an other virtual desktop. If yew how?
I have installed freeswitch app from opensuse 11.2 repositories. App got broken during the process/setup.., I have removed it (yast) ignoring some of it's dependencies, also I have removed folder /opt/freeswitch manually. In Yast it shows that app is still installed.. when trying to remove it, there is an error, force remove also out puts an error. "whereis" command shows no file, I was also trying to force install it one more time but it fails. Is there a was to delete it permanently?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI run a number of Ubuntu 9.10 boxes attached to multiple daisy-chained KVMs. None of the PCs are using any GUIs - they all run in console mode. I often reboot them remotely via an SSH session, etc. If a monitor isn't actually active on the PC when it reboots, Grub2 uses a low-res video mode, despite having a higher-res video mode set correctly in Grub2's configuration. If I reboot WHILE THE MONITOR is attached to the Ubuntu PC via the KVM, the video mode is set correctly as configured in Grub2's config files. If I reboot WITH NO MONITOR attached, the video mode is ignored and I'm stuck in a low-res mode next time I attach to the PC via the KVM. How can I force Grub2 to honor the configured graphics setting, despite not having a monitor present at the time it boots?

My gdm login screen always appears on the second monitor even if it is switched off. My question is how to force gdm to show login screen always on primary monitor with resolution 1280x1024? I use Ubuntu 10.04.Now I'm ready to modify gdm sources if there is no such option in configuration files.

As you can see in the 3082 line, the path says /usr/lib/banshee/Banshee.exe... I didn't knew I was backporting Wine to run banshee.
A colleague of mine was studying at the University of Vienna and saw an application which was based on linux whereby other pc's booted from it and if on the server they had set it to force a clean install on that PC it would download and install a windows image. Does anyone know of the app or could point me in the direction of a similar app.

I downloaded and installed the XBMC media center, but whenever I open up the application, it displays across both monitors. View 3 Replies View RelatedI"m running 10.04 on a netbook. I switched my Java look and feel to Nimbus and now my java application opens with most of the buttons and window content missing. The main menu is there, but otherwise the main form is mostly blank. If I restart the application (not my computer) 2-3 times, the problem is resolved until the next time I have to launch the java app. I did not see this issue before changing the look & feel setting for Java. But the GTK l&F doesn't work for other reasons, so I was forced to make a change.
I'm running compiz and I know the blank windows in Java apps was a common problem a while back. I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is related to that old problem or is something different.
Any of you ever heard of OS/2 WARP? My dad is a longtime user, as was I until I got my Mac (and now my netbook with Ubuntu). In any case, the OS is a tad...obsolete and my dad at some point wishes to try Ubuntu. In his current setup, he has a "Window List" that can be activated using a keyboard shortcut. It's a popup (not in a menu bar or "panel") that can be moved around and resized. From that you can use your keyboard to navigate to the program or window that you want. For instance, if I want to get to Firefox, I press Ctrl+Escape (to activate the Window List) and then I hit "F" as many times as needed to highlight "Firefox". Then I just hit "Enter" and I'm there. Anything similar out there for Ubuntu (it is preferable if the solution has text as well as icons or else can have the icons removed leaving only the text)
In addition, both him and I would be interested in some program for launching/switching to programs using keyboard shortcuts. On the Mac, I use Quicksilver for this, where it actually Launches the program if it's not open, and switches to it if it is. However, Gnome Do unfortunately lacks this functionality and I have no way to do it off the top of my head.
I use Xubunt 10.04, today when login, I found:
1)I lost ability to move application window. eg, The firefox window is stuck and anchored at the upper left corner. I can still resize by dragging the lower right corner. I notice the upper right corner resize tab disappears. If open another application, it is again anchored at upper left corner and cannot be moved.
2)under Settings>Xfce Setting Manager> Window Manager, all the icons are gone. Same inside Window ManagerTweaks. I used "xfce4-panel" in terminal, it doesn't help.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop running Ubuntu hooked up to a TV via a VGA to S-Video converter with the VGA-out through an external monitor, and I am trying to find a way to set vlc or mplayer to open fullscreen in the external monitor by default. Eventually I want to be able to hit enter on a video file and have it play on the TV without any dragging to the external monitor. I have googled around a bit, checked the monitor settings options, and looked through the media player options but so far can't find anything.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I run my dual monitors with twinview on an NVidia GeForce 8400GS when I maximize a window it does it as you would expect (on one monitor) and when a pop up comes out of an application or when I bring up Synapse it appears in the center of my monitor. However, when I add a third monitor as a separate X window, the behavior of the windows on my dual screens becomes very different. It maximizes across both monitors, and Synapse opens with the center between the two monitors.Any thoughts on how to fix this or why it would change?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use TCM (Toolkit for Conceptual Modeling) but the font used by the application for menus window headers & such is very hard to read. I can change the font used for fields within the application in the configuration file, but there doesn't seem to be a way to change the fonts for the other fonts.
Is there a way to do this through gnome or Ubuntu?
after upgrading to Natty (and playing around some with Unity) I noticed that the top part of the application windows are often hidden/covered by the gnome panel (see attachments).
This is particularly annoying for the rdesktop session (second jpg) which I had set up so that it gave maximum desktop size to the rdp session while leaving the panel of top. If you look carefully you see that the "panel gap" is not at the bottom of the screen, while the panel itself covers the top of the rdp window.
It seems like, that the 'anchor point' for application windows used to be '+0+24' (so just below the panel) while now it's '+0+0' in the top left corner of the desktop. I suspect that while playing with unity I reset one of the compiz options which takes care of this. But I can't find it.
we have new dedicated servers to run our application server oracle developer forms 6i, remember we have not install anything other the rhel 5.5 64 bits, since it is BIN files to execute from we have problem encounter, we create a new share/premia where our oracle forms 6i and report 6i BIN or say executables there, and it work fine we made setup. but while users are working every all of sudden it hang and says not responsing.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an embedded server running Ubuntu which is on a network with a lot of wireless AP's. The AP's doesn't support SNMP or anything else, so I monitor if they are up or down by simply pinging them continuously.
My question is if there is anything I could install on the server that could provide me with a webpage where I could see the ping time to the AP's? So it just shows a list of the IP's I have told it to ping, and what their latest response time is. This is what I basically need, but if it were more advanced than that, and could give warnings if ping time were to high etc.
is there any way to monitor each application network bandwidth usage ?I've used gnome-system-monitor, but unfortunately it just show the total network activity
