Debian Multimedia :: Force Firefox To Use Xdg-open

Dec 28, 2015

Firefox keeps trying to download docx files with my default text editor. Is there a way to get Firefox to just open everything using xdg-open?

There seems to be no way to get this browser to consistently open files with my chosen default applications. My mime-type settings are only obeyed sometimes. The pertinent file type isn't in the Application list of browser preferences, and there's no way to add it. The "Do this automatically..." option in the file download dialog is greyed out, so I have to go through my file system and choose the desired application every time I download a file of that type.

For whatever reason I can't get FF to show all of the add-ons I have. Yes, they are installed and they appear when as icons when I first boot up but after I close FF and start it again there are no icons (like Adblock).

Debian Multimedia :: Force Mencoder To Stop Streaming?

Aug 12, 2010

Is there a way to instruct mencoder to stop streaming/recording after a specified period associated with a loss of signal?I use mencoder to record over-the-air television recordings. Most of the time there are no problems.Occasionally a station's transmission signal disappears, caused by quirky atmospheric conditions, usually at night.Noticing these signal outages is easy by the mencoder error message:dvb_streaming_read, attempt N. %x failed with errno %y when reading %z bytes"Lengthy outages are unbearable because mencoder silently waits forever rather than quit. The significant problem with lengthy signal outages is mencoder continues recording for the time specified by the -endpos parameter. Thus, for example, if the recording is scheduled for 2 hours and there is a 20 minute loss of signal, the recording does not end until 2 hours and 20 minutes after starting.

Generally, when the interruption is lengthy the recording is ruined and I don't care to watch. I would like to programmatically tell mencoder to stop waiting and quit.Is there a way to do this? Say, after ten minutes of no signal, just terminate.I do not notice any parameters that might offer that option, but I could be overlooking something obvious. I tried the -skiplimit parameter with no success.I am aware of the MPlayer/MEncoder Tips and Tricks thread.

Debian Multimedia :: When Open An Open Office Document From An NFS Share It Always Opens As Readonly

Apr 27, 2010

When I open an open office document from an NFS share it always opens as readonly. This was a problem I had on Arch linux and the fix was to change the locking options in the soffice script but I've tried that fix here and it doesn't work. I've seen a lot of discussions but they all go back to changing the locking options in soffice, has anyone got any alternative fixes or one that definitely works with locking?

Debian :: Error: Cannot Open Display: 0 When Trying To Launch Firefox

Sep 8, 2010

So I just installed 32-bit Squeeze. I've done exactly two things since booting into the first install: pt-get install gtk+2.0, and ./firefox, so unless gtk did something, this might be an easily fixable problem with Debian itself. After installing gtk and trying to run firefox via command line, it tells me

Code: Error: cannot open display: :0 I googled a bit and couldn't come up with a solid solution, but the problem seems to be around other places. Any idea how to fix this?

General :: Force Firefox To Use Different Library?

Aug 12, 2011

I'm trying to upgrade to Firefox 5 on RHEL5, and am getting the following error:

./firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /home/isdtc/tdiakiw/bin/firefox5/firefox/libxul.so)

As the computer is a work machine,I don't have access to update the libraries directly. To try and get around this I downloaded the libstdc++.so.6.0.10 library.strings libstdc++.so.6.0.10 | grep GLIBCXX shows:

GLIBCXX_3.4
GLIBCXX_3.4.1
GLIBCXX_3.4.2[code]....

Is there some way of forcing firefox to use this library instead? I have tried adding the directory containing the new library (with a so name) to LD_LIBRARY_PATH and then running, but I'm still getting the same error message

./firefox
+ moz_libdir=/usr/local/lib/firefox-5.0.1
+ found=0

OpenSUSE :: Force KDE 4 Applications To Open As A New Instance Not New Tab?

May 17, 2011

When a new instance of a running KDE 4 application (kwrite, konqueror, etc.) is run under opensuse 11.4 with KDE4 it seems that the default behaviour is to open a new tab in the running instance.

This occurs when the new instance is called from the command line; the start menu; the run dialogue; or a desktop icon, even when called from a separate desktop. In konqueror the menu option <File> <new window> opens a new tab and seems redundant.

How can a user force KDE 4 applications to run a new instance in a separate frame / window when another instance of that application is already running?

Ubuntu :: Force Evolution To Open All Links In Background?

When checking emails, many will be notifications from forum threads or other internet links. I have noticed it is very inconsistent in the way it opens them. Sometimes the browser will stay in the background so I can keep reading the emails and keep clicking on the links for reading in the browser afterwards. Other times the browser will jump to the front with every link so I have to keep switching back to Evo.

And other times it's a mix of both, seems completely random.

General :: Force X To Re-theme All Open Windows To Current X Resources?

Aug 24, 2010

I've got a ~/.Xdefaults that has a specific color theme defined for Xorg, and this works. I've got a ~/.XdefaultsNew that specifies an alternate color theme. Xorg starts and loads ~/.Xdefaults which is correct. After running some applications, I run

xrdb ~/.XdefaultsNew

This overrides all my X resources to the new defined values (correctly). If I open a new window, the theme is seen correctly. However, all the previously opened windows retain the original theme. Is there a way to force X to "re-theme" all windows it is managing with the currently loaded X resources?

Ubuntu Networking :: Nfs Locking Files - Cannot Open For Editing, Or Open Firefox / Thunderbird?

Dec 12, 2010

Server - Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts
Client - Kubuntu 10.10

When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:

"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:

Unknown User

Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem. Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...

Debian Multimedia :: Installing Firefox 32 Bit On 64 Bit?

Dec 12, 2010

I'm using Firefox 4.0 b7, and tried to install Mozilla binary on Debian 64 bit. Since it was built for 32 bit (x86), I needed to install also ia32-libs-gtk package. This at least enabled Firefox to start, but still it has UI problems, because it accesses current theme binary from /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/ which are obviously compiled for 64 bits. This causes some UI to be degraded to generic GTK. Is there a normal way to solve this?

I my case I got a whole bunch of errors like this (using Nimbus theme, in case of Clearlooks errors are of the similar nature) Plus there are some plugins errors too, which are a second issue: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module": /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libcanberra-gtk-module.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Open Any Programs On X (i3)

Feb 18, 2016

I use gdm3, Debian Jessie (Not sure if 8.2 or 8.3, I did a dist-upgrade so maybe 8.3), and i3-wm.

I went to shower and came back to find my hard drive full due to the syslog and daemon log being filled with 76GB each worth of the same 7-line error message about NetworkManager and wpa_supplicant. (Earlier that day the 80% of my CPU was being consumed by those two, and my battery life fell from 7 hours to 2 hours)

After I shortened those log files to 700 and 1200 lines, and I rebooted and then logged into i3, I found that I couldn't open any graphical programs, except Emacs24, Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Minitube, and Wireshark. I also noticed that the log files that I shortened have disappeared, so I cannot recover the 7-line error message.

I haven't tried all the graphical programs that I have, but Terminator, Pidgin, Hamster Time Tracker, Iceweasel, and gnome-terminal will not open (although Emacs24, Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Minitube, and Wireshark will, and NetworkManager seems unaffected as well). By "won't open" I mean that when I run the programs from dmenu or any Emacs shell (eshell, shell, ansi-term), the process runs (as visible in ps aux), but it does not show up in i3. Pidgin and Hamster Time Tracker will reserve space in the i3bar, but it doesn't get populated.

I haven't extensively tested what happens in Gnome3, but I have noticed that I can't open the activities overlay.

Debian Multimedia :: System Settings Will Not Open

Dec 23, 2014

I have a user who has recently switched to Debian 7 (from Windows). While reinstalling his PC I foolisly went straight to install the ATi proprietry drivers (as every computer I have come across this in this building is running with an ATi card). Once install I found out that the computer actually had on board Intel Haswell graphics. So I installed the correct driver and uninstalled the ATi one. Since then System Settings refuse to open they are forever "Starting". The user is running on Gnome Classic as Gnome 3 refuses to start (in what I am starting to suspect is a linked issue).

Running "gnome-control-center" from the command line details the following error:

(gnome-control-center:4583): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'gnome-control-center' received an X Window System error.

This probably reflects a bug in the program.

The error was 'GLXBadContext'.

(Details: serial 158 error_code 171 request_code 154 minor_code 6)

(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Debian Multimedia :: Text Not Showing Up In Dialogs On Firefox

Jan 27, 2015

I just installed a fresh install of Debian Wheezy to an old Pentium 4 desktop computer I found on Craigslist. Everything is mostly up and running but I've been encountering an odd issue with Firefox. Whenever I type text into either a search or text dialog on Youtube, Facebook or on Duck Duck Go the text is invisible. I can highlight the text to see what I have written, but obviously this is quite annoying not to be able to view what I am typing in these places in real-time. The strange thing is that it is only these sites that I have found, everywhere else (reddit, google, Debian forums as well) can see what I am typing. I'm using Firefox 35.0 right now.
