I have a machine currently running Debian Lenny on which I would like to run Ubuntu for the driver support in its newer kernel. However, I did a test boot from the installation CD and it appears to be running at less than half its rated speed. This is the output from the Debian kernel:
brendand@kant:~$ uname -a
Linux kant 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Wed May 12 18:03:14 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
brendand@kant:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor: 0

Maybe this is some sort of power save bug where the CPU speed is incorrectly scaled back. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Should I report it as a bug, and, if so, how do I do that?
I've recently updated my ubuntu lucid to maverick (32bit).However I noticed a strange issue at boot. My boot time is increased more than three times(tried to reprofile, but with no improvement) from 24s to 1.23min.After some bootcharting,I noticed that the disk utilization during maverick boot seems to be at 50% for most of the time and also the cpu seems to work at half speed for most of the time...My laptop is an asus m51sn, intel t8300, nvidia geforce 9500m gs, 3gb ram, 500Gb WD scorpio blue hdd.
I have a HP nx7400 laptop. Now I have a docking station DC power adapter - Works Fine. Ordered another DC so i could travel with it, but when used ubuntu runs at a very slow speed.
I have a pretty decent DSL connection that usually gave me about 105KB/second download speed over wifi. The "official" download speed was 1.5 megabits so I should have been getting a bit more, but that's not my question.
I recently switched to Mint from Ubuntu. Now my download speed is significantly slower, to the tune of 45 KB/second. Since the connection runs at normal speed when I connect via an ethernet cable, my guess is that mint doesn't give enough power to the wifi card. Is there any way I can fix that?
I have a Compaq 8710w and after upgrading to the latest Debian/testing (Linux version 4.1.0-1-amd64)the fan runs at full speed all the time. There seems to be something strange with the temperatures reported by temp4, it is stuck at 100 degrees.:
I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I'm not sure which veraion of linux I have but it was the latest veraon bfor the recent update. I accidentally hit alt ctrl f11 and my comp went inyo the grub menu. I've tried startx and it does nothing. About half the commands I enter do nothing and the other half r not found or are incorrect. The only vommand thw actualley work is reboot. I searched for this and read a grub guide but it did no good.
Ubuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.
i both have the same problem, i'm trying to burn my images at 4 or 8 speed, but ubuntu 10.04 says that the hardware does not support that kind of speed and switch up to 16 speed and more. i know it can burn at low speeds, at least in windows, it is a bit strange that fast burning is okee, and slow not, what can i do to prevent this? i don't wanna burn to much errors on my discs
I am quite new to this ubuntu business, but i like what I'm seeing so far. Well, almost everything that I'm seeing. I seem to have run into a tricky problem with xubuntu 10.04. I was in the process of customizing my desktop appearance (via Xfce4 Settings manager), and I found a nice theme to go with (dusk I think it was called). I then went on to change the window settings and starting from the bottom most option I browsed the various styles. After a few of these my computer decided to log me out quite suddenly, and I was prompted to login.
This is where the problem is: I type in my password and it logs me in for maybe a half a second only to log me out again. No matter how many times I put in the password I keep getting logged out. So now I'm running xubuntu 10.04 off a pendrive that was used in its initial installation. Is there any way to log back in and stay logged in long enough to undo the window styling at fault? I had put in quite a bit of work migrating files, installing all sorts of things and setting up fancy launchers, and I would prefer not to have to redo it again.
I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox, opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network
Finally got around to buying a DVD player so i put 3 old Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns on one dvd and it plays fine on the computer. However , when played on the tv-dvd player only one movie ( the last one on the dvd ) would play . I did not use a 3rd party converter app as the dvd player advertised that it would play standard avi movies. I burned with Brassero and noted that half the dvd was still blank if that's relative .
I'm clearly missing something small. My Ubuntu machine can see the XP machines in the WORKGROUP, pull files over and even print to the printer attached to one of them. Internet sharing also works. However, the XP machines cannot find the Ubuntu system.
I recently upgraded from XP to Kubuntu, and I noticed that during partitioning (during installation) I could only partition 80GB out of the 160GB I should have.
Code: sudo fdisk -l | grep Disk Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes Disk identifier: 0x000ed7ef Disk /dev/sdb: 8004 MB, 8004132864 bytes Disk identifier: 0x000a154d
Also, at Grub there are several old Ubuntu selections from a previous install I did a long time ago; not the next oldest 1 or 2 Kubuntu versions, older Ubuntu versions.
My desktop has been shifted about half way to the right and a "black hole" has been left. I'm not sure how else to describe this, so I will include a picture to try to make things clearer:
I have no idea how I have done this. The Android SDK Emulator is the only thing I have downloaded and played with recently. I've checked monitor settings, changed the background image, adjusted the number of desktops (all desktops are affected), logged out & back in and rebooted. I'm not sure where else to look. Googling hasn't given me any more clues so far.
Everything else is working fine. Windows will open up normally and cover up the "black hole". Although they do leave an after-image, particularly when you move them around - like a 70s video clip!
With everything visible that I can see closed, my laptop is consuming half if of it's available RAM (and that does not include caches). I can only, at an eyeball, account for a quarter of it: [URL]. Where is the rest being spent at?
I have a new sony vaio VPCF11NFX/B with a fresh install of Lucid. I am using a VGA-out to a LCD monitor. It shows up and is recognized. I cannot get video to appear on my laptop monitor. Moreover, when I unplug my external monitor, I cannot boot into ubuntu. It brings me to low graphics mode and I can't do anything from there because half of the screen is missing.
When the opening little music plays during start up, the first half of it is loud, but halfway through, the sound cuts to about half volume. Everything else afterwards is also very quiet. After boosting the volume output to 150%, and boosting VLC's audio output to 200%, the audio is still barely audible on my laptop. I've gone into alsamixer, and it's at max. I once found how to reset the audio card, and the sound was normal again, but only until I shut the laptop off, and next time, it was the same as always.
I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, and using an old Toshiba Satellite laptop. Don't know what my sound card is.

I have a 500MB video that is 720x400. I want to half the size of the video while retaining the same relative quality. My main goal is to half the filesize of the video, but to do that and keep the same relative quality I will have to also make the resolution smaller.I can't seem to find a way to do this.I would preferer to use ffmpeg, but any solution would be good at this point. I would really like to be able to do this from the command line, but if there is a gui program that will also give me the command line it uses, that's great too.Does any one know of a way to half the file size of a video while maintaining the same relative quality?
Any sound playing through pulseaudio is distorted for the first half-second or so. Sounds like a buzzing or crackling or something. This happens, for example, in Pidgin and Clementine (music player). If I set these programs to output through alsa instead of pulseaudio, there's no such problem. Also no such problem existed in 10.04. And I tried the fix in the sticky, nothing changed. Probably less than a half second of distortion, really. Maybe 100ms.
I have a laptop with Win XP and Ubuntu installed as dual boot. Well something happened with the Ubuntu install and I need to reinstall but can't figure out how to do it.
I want to know what other people have done to stop their computers from crashing. My main computer has now crashed 5 times in the last hour and a half.
I am not using Compiz, and to the best of my knowledge it is uninstalled. I try not to use flash with the internet. I am using the 64 bit version of 10.04, because I want to make use of my 8GB of RAM.
The computer crashes constantly. Constantly. Usually when I am using it. I can leave it on for days without a problem; but as soon as I need to get work done, it starts crashing.
Some specs: ASUS P7P55D Pro motherboard Intel i5-750 processor. evga GTS 250 video card with NVIDIA drivers (uptodate) 8GB RAM Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
I need a gameplan to make this computer stop crashing. how to start diagnosing the causes of these crashes.
