Ubuntu :: Finding The Frontends For Installing Software?

Mar 9, 2010

I generally prefer Kubuntu over Ubuntu, but the one thing I have an issue with is how tricky it can be to install software, or at least find new software to try. KPackageKit is a bit unwieldy - at least for me - having only a rudimentary way of searching though collections of applications, where applications and "-data" packages are mixed up together. Its just my main gripe with the whole thing - is there an alternative? (I'm thinking an analogue to the "Ubuntu Software Centre" but for KDE) I'm running Kubuntu Lucid Alpha 3

May 22, 2011

Does anybody know where to find an rpm of sane-frontends?I want to use my auto-document-feed functionality on my scanner using scanadf, which is part of sane-frontends.Otherwise I'd also welcome alternative suggestions for scanadf.

I'm running Suse 11.2 and using a Brother DCP7065DN scanner/printer, which actually comes with stunning drivers and support for Linux.

Ubuntu :: Multiple Frontends Mess With Settings?

Feb 19, 2010

for the first time I've gotten my hands on a ASRock ION 330HT and set it up as a front end to my existing front/backend which sits in the living room. I have EVERYTHING working but I've found an annoyance which is probably as a result of one of my screw-ups.

Basically - the backend (/frontend) stores it's videos in the default /var/lib/mythtv/ blah blah blah. This has always worked. I copy my video files there, rescan and bob's your uncle.

With the ASRock, I'd like to store some files locally, so currently the videos folder is set to /var/jan/Videos. I'll work on smb mounting later.

When I scan that, the videos also show and bob's my second uncle.

HOWEVER. After the scan from the ASRock, my MAIN box also is looking for files in /home/jan/Videos (which doesn't exist there) and finds nothing. If I rescan - all is good again. Then going back the the ASRock, IT is then looking for the files in /var/lib/mythtv etc. and finds nothing.

Why should setting in EITHER frontend mess with the setting in the other? That kind of defeats the purpose of having multiple front ends with multiple hardware/software configurations right?

Hardware :: Finding / Installing Drivers For Philips SIC4750/27 Webcam

I have a Philips webcam I would like to get to work with a proper driver on Ubuntu 10.04. It will work under a generic driver on programs such as Skype, but as soon as I try to use it for web cam sites such as BlogTV, it will say "Webcam required on this site."I have seen similar posts on this and other websites, pointing towards SPCA, but everything I have tried has not worked. When trying SPCA, I tried to do install on the terminal and all that would happen is terminal would respond with: "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded."Is there an easier method I am missing here, or is there something am I doing wrong?

Ubuntu :: Grub2 Not Finding All OS's?

Apr 13, 2010

I am in the process of trying out different Linux distros. This is what my hard drive partitions look like:

sda1 - Ubuntu
(Free space - about 150 GB)
sda3 - Windows (sadly)
sda4 - Windows Recovery

I successfully installed Fedora to the free space, which is now sda2, but when I was installing, I chose to keep my current bootloader so it wouldn't mess anything up. Now, I can't get Grub to detect my Fedora install, even after running 'update-grub' from the current Grub root (sda1).How can I get Grub to detect my Fedora install?

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Looks Like Not Finding 9.10?

Jan 27, 2010

I bought new Sony VAIO NS31S. It had preinstalled Windows Vista. I wanted to go back to Ubuntu, cause I used it (but never been really understanding how its working) on my previous notebook. I downloaded Wubi with Ubuntu 9.10, installed, rebooted - everything was fine. I even had connection to the web (what I was very suprised to see, cause I had troubles with that Net provider on my old hardware with U 8.something).

I removed several programs, mainly games or accessories for PalmOS, etc. On the second hand I installed Kadu, Google Chrome (here I couldnt use Software Center, it was installed form downloaded package), Netbeans, and then some errors occured, so I allowed system to get updates. After installing them I switched off computer, and today (the whole story was yesterday and day before) I wanted to boot Ubuntu, but GRUB gives me command line & some info(in a while I swith VAIO off, go to the old machine, and try to rewrite text from GRUB here). I TABbed, and there was a list of commands, so I tried some of them, and It looks like my system is gone. On Windows side I think its all ok - here's my folder hierarchy:

Code:

/ubuntu
//disks
root.disk
swap.disk

[code]....

if there are /'s before files name it means its a directory. else its a normal file. Whitespaces shows what belongs where.if there already has been topic like this. Ive searched this forum for 'wubi' 'vaio' and 'grub' and there was nothing I thought might be simillar. Is it possible to switch off double system choosing? I mean Windows gives me choice to boot Windows or Ubuntu, or use some windows recovery tools. If I try to boot Ubuntu, there comes GRUB, which gives second choice of choosing Windows. But this is smaller problem, then nnot booting linux I rebooted once again. Here's what GRUB says:

Code:

GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command comletions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device/file completions. ] So I pressed TAB, found some commands (there's quite lot of them, so as for now I wont write them here).

Code:

sh:grub> ls
(loop0) (hd0) (hd0,2) (hd0,1)

Code:

sh:grub> linux
error: no kernel specified

Code:

sh:grub> boot
error: no loaded kernel

I'd be surprised if someone had targeted my system, especially because I didn't install any obscure .debs or anything recently, but I'd really like to find out if it's been compromised somehow. Say, by obtaining an overview of all users currently logged into my system or something. Is that possible?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 LTS Finding Installed Software?

Why is it that some software isn't in the Ubuntu Software Center's installed software list and must be searched for. Is the presented list a comprehensive list for applications only, or does it categorize software some other way. I am a bit uncertain about this since both image magick (a command line "application) and xvfb needed to be searched for in order to appear. Is their a way to get a complete listing of different types (and if necessary all) of the software installed on your system.

Ubuntu :: Finding A Html And Php Editor

Apr 9, 2011

I am learning to do some html, php and css. I read that a normal word processor will not do. Here is what I am suppsed to use... Before you settle on a text editor, make sure it has the following features: Supports syntax highlighting for HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP. you to code and debug faster by visually separating the different elements of the file. For example, such a text editor might highlight PHP code in blue and HTML code in red. Automatic error highlighting for HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP. you catch errors in your programs while you are writing your code before these errors are detected when you run your program in Zen Cart. For example, if you fail to specify a closing tag for your HTML code, the editor uses a red underline to highlight the offending HTML tag.
