View 5 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there is anyone who has some kind of a small script/code (preferably in C/C++) which reads a partition and just displays the type. For example, the script/code would be called partype and should be something like this: partype /dev/sda1, will read sda1 and display for example ext4, because sda1 was formated as ext4.
Note: I'm not a developer so I have no idea how this should be done, plus I would like the script/code to do it by itself the checking, without using fdisk/sfdisk/cfdisk/parted/gparted, because none of this apps work quite well when it comes to the partition type or file system type.
i am using for few years ubuntu gnome distributions. I am having lot of problems with my Dell Mini 9 and external display, ([URL] and i have lot of pdf books. I tried few readers but adobe was the best one (especially for scans of old books), but still, it can be very slow. Does anyone knows if it make any difference in performance if i switch to KDE or XFCE version? And maybe as subquestion-can i avoid my problems with external display freezing if i switch from gnome to some other desktop version?
Currently when I connect a card reader (with a card inside, of course) gnome auto-starts gphoto. However I don't use gphoto and I would like gnome to auto-start nautilus instead

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have openSUSE 11.2, 64 bits. I use Evince from the very beginning. Since a few weeks, when I want to open a .pdf file, Acrobat Reader appears and reads my file. It seems to have become the default reader now. However, I never wanted to change from Evince :this simple program is well enough for me. I tried various ways, but I can't define Evince as my default .pdf reader. How can I make Evince to become my default reader again please ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSometime back I installed cpufreq. Now while I know quite little about cpufreq, what little I understand tells me it can do two things :-
a. Give the user the capability to change frequencies - there is something called max frequencies and minimum frequencies and the user can play between them.
b. Show the cpufrequencies via the GNOME cpufreq plugin/applet.
Now while its able to show me the frequencies, I'm not able to find a GNOME or GTK front-end which I can use to set the frequencies. I did read a little bit about something called 'governers' which from what I learnt are something similar to profiles - as in you want to be conservative, powersave, ondemand and performance.
1. I'm looking for a Gnome-GTK CPU setting frequency GUI.
2. If somebody wants to share more info. about the whole cpu frequency thing that is also very welcome as I'm not really aware as to how can I do things a bit more intelligently so I'm able to get a bit more performance while not using much energy (can be done or cannot be done ?) but that discussion hopefully comes later after I've a tool through which I can do the same in GUI.

trying to find the best pdf reader. adobe reader is ok but with 10-11 pdfs opened, scrolling through each pdf, it gets kind of annoying having to physically click the inside of each pdf to scroll down, instead of switching tabs, and getting focus automatically
the default PDF viewer is pretty slow. i have about 200 pages with a great amount of images and adobe reader searched a lot faster. i find myself having to wait about 40-45 seconds for it to scan the whole PDF.
anyone have any suggestions out there on a better pdf reader?
I have installed ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition on my hp mini 1010nr. i went to upload some photos on my sd reader and nothing happened. is there some way to make ubuntu recognize the reader as a usb port.

Anway, I have a very nice EEE that I love having Ubuntu on it and am desperately trying to avoid the Windows OS, but the Kindle app. is most important. When I loaded the device in firefox's security devices, it loaded fine without any error, but does not allow me to login (the button is disabled). In the Details pane the status is shown as "not present".
Tech support installed a new computer for me at work yesterday and it's running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10. I succeeded in installing Adobe Reader 9 (I need to review PDF documents in a number of PDF readers including Adobe as part of my job) but I can't open any PDFs using Reader. I ran "acroread" in the shell and it rendered this output:

There are two things that evince does not do that I need it to do:
1) In dual page viewing mode, it needs to know what to do with the first page. Sometimes the first page is a cover, and sometimes it is not. The facing pages are not correct if the first page is not a cover page, then evince does not place the facing pages on the same screen for me
2) I want to view pages using the best fit mode. I then click on a page in the side pane and the document suddenly changes back to fit page width mode. The "save current settings ad default" does nothing
Because of this, I would like either a fix or a recommendation for a better pdf reader.
I have all of my music on an SD card so it doesn't take up space on my hard drive. I put it into my SD card reader and ubuntu is all like, "gtfo doesn't exist."

I've read a few things on this forum that people can read their .cbr's but those posts were back in 2005. Is there a known problem with cbr and karmic? If not how do I fix this? I'm way behind on my comic reading since I moved to ubuntu and I need to catch up!

When I try to run the foxit that I re-installed from Foxit's website, I get absolutely nothing? I ran through the install using a number of instructions and still get the same result - basically an executable that does nothing.

I'm having some issues with DVD playback. Blu-ray playback is not an issue (at least no more than it is for anyone else using Linux), but when I try to play a DVD the video is garbled and choppy, same as the audio. (see attached picture).
I'm using an Asus BR-04B2T blu-ray reader and an Evgo nVidia gtx460 with nvidia-current drivers.
I removed the blu-ray drive and put a friends dvd drive into my computer to test and see if it's the graphics card or the drive, and the DVD player worked perfectly, flawless playback, so I know it's the drive.
Also the drive is not faulty. Both DVD and Blu-Ray work fine under my windows 7 partition.
I forgot to mention, VLC behaves the same as all other players, as shown in this picture. Also you can almost make out that I'm trying to watch the Simpson's box set my friend got me.
