Ubuntu :: Finding A 'native' Shell For 10.10?

Jan 14, 2011

Is there a 'native' shell for Ubuntu 10.10? I usually work in KORN shell, but I've got a feeling that Ubuntu 'likes' BASH OR does it really matter which shell I use?

Ubuntu :: Shell Command For Finding All Packages That Provide A Certain Virtual Package?

Jul 29, 2010

I want to get a list of all packages that provide a certain virtual package. A way of doing this would be to write a shell script that parses all output of Code: apt-cache search -f .* And spits out all packages that have the virtual package in the provides section. The problem with this approach is that it takes an awful long amount of time to execute. I guess that there should be a simple command that does this in an efficient manner, but which I wasn't able to find.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get The Native Spotify On 10.10 ?

Oct 12, 2010

I'm struggling to get the native Spotify on Ubuntu 10.10 working. I haven't tried it on any other version so I'm not sure if it's exclusive to 10.10.

Basically, the application loads fine, until I hover over to the left-hand side bar (playlists etc), at which point it crashes and *poof* instantly closes down.

However, I know it's not right, since my laptop and upstairs box (both running 10.10) look fine. The problem is that Scribus looks like a Windows 95 application. I assume that the problem may be with the Qt support.I installed the Qt setting manager and set the theme to GTK+, but it had no effect.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Difference Between Native And Virtual

Jun 9, 2010

I've been running Sony Vegas in VirtualBox. My machine is dual core 2ghz and has 2 GB RAM so the VB gets 90MB video and 950MB system. XP is 32 bits. I also have the identical set up installed natively. The native version gets the full 2 GB system and 512 video. A non scientific test tells me the VirtualBox system is faster. My camera is a new T2i which produces .MOV files. The only program that can read them without stutter is VLC in Ubuntu. Quicktime in both Windows version stutters all over the place. VLC in Windows is so bad I deleted it.

To the point: I'm going to build a new system for video editing using at least 8 GB RAM and Windows 7 (Sorry, I don't have the patience to wait for Lumeira or Lightworks). I like the fact that I can be in both environments without booting. But, I'd like some real world advise about this. In a pure 64 bit environment, will I be better off in a dual-boot situation or virtual? I'm reluctant to load up W7 on my current system because of the hassle associated with getting a new registration for the new system.

Ubuntu :: Good Native Backup Utility For 10.04

A nice incremental backup facility would be good too. I would be backing up to an external USB hard drive but of a smaller size than the source drive so compression and the ability to choose what and what not to backup is needed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Use Native Windows DLLs In WINE?

Jan 3, 2010

Currently I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on my computer, and it is the only OS installed. I purchased the $30 student WIn7 Professional upgrade. I have a XP Pro CD + Key, and I plan on using that just to upgrade to Win7. I love Ubuntu and it is my primary OS, it is just that every now and then you come across some program that requires windows (Propellerhead Reason 4, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Atomix Virtual DJ etc.) and it requires full system resorces so you do not want to use wine. I love Linux, but somtimes I just have to use WIndows, so I do not want to hear any arguments about that.

I want to do a clean install of everything, and I have data + programs backed up, I would like to install Ubuntu 9.10, WinXP Pro and I want to Upgrade XP Pro to 7. I am completely new to GRUB 2, and upgrading windows; but I have experience with Linux and Windows, and dual booting. I would like to install Ubuntu 9.10 on its own partition (No WUBI), and WInXP + Win 7 on there own partitions (3 Partitions Overall). I would like to know what to do at this point, Should I install Ubuntu then Xp then 7, Xp then 7 then Ubuntu, etc. I know how to make Partitions, I just need to know the order in which I should install the operating systems, and how to get it to dual boot.

MY COMPUTER:

I had a Sony Vaio PCV-RS530G, and the mobo failed, so I rebuilt it, the case, processor, fans, CD/Floppy drives, TV tuner and power supply are unchanged, everyhing else has been replaced, here is the breakdown:

Proecessor: Intel Pentium 4 3.20 GHZ, HT Technology, No 64-Bit or VT-x
Motherboard: Biostar P4M900-M4
Hard Disk Drive: Seagate 1TB SATA (IDE Mode, no RAID)
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS, PCI Express, 512 MB RAM
RAM: 2 GB Corsair, DDR2-5300

1) How can I install all the screen savers that were in Jaunty, but are missing in karmic?

2) Can Win7 be installed without a key, and then have the key entered later (I AM NOT PIRATING, I JUST WANT TO PUT THE KEY IN AND ACTIVATE AFTER I CAN TEST OUT EVERYTHING AND MAKE SURE THAT WINDOWS AND UBUNTU ARE RUNNING SMOOTHLY)

3) Will XP mode in Win7 work on a processor without virtualization technology?

4) I have Icon sets, cursors, window borders, and panel backgrounds from different sources, can I export this as a complete theme in 1 file (Deb Packages are preferable, but even a tar-ball is fine) so I can install it easily on more machines, and share it with friends?

5) How do you use native windows DLLs in WINE?

6) My PC has a tv tuner, how do I use it in Ubuntu?

7) What is a good size for a swap partition for my computer (Detailed information below)?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Native Instruments Audio 2 Dj Not Work

Feb 16, 2010

there is notebook Asus M51T Series, Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic OS (regular upgrades), USB MIDI-keyboard Korg Nanokey, external USB sound card Native Instruments Audio 2 Dj and USB-MIDI-controller Numark Omni Control. With Nanokey there are no problems. Audio 2 Dj does not work normally, Omni Control at all has no driver in Ubuntu, if I have correctly understood.

For example, any application (for example a player) starts an audiostream. The sound is only the first some seconds. After that it turns to short series of clicks. Clicks chaotically appear and for lack of any prospective audiostreams. Thus built in sound card works normally.

Ubuntu :: Gmail Notification For Native Mail Icon In 10.04

May 2, 2010

so far 10.04 is great.. coming over from Fedora.. liking what I see... however, question..

Is there any way to get the default mail icon in the top right corner to notify of new mail in gmail? I found an app that does it, gmail notifier or something.. but seems redundant to have 2 mail icons when 1 would do the job.. but not sure how I'd configure it. I see that I can set up evolution but.. I've got tens of thousands of messages on gmail, and it would take wayyy too long to download.. I'd rather it just notify me of new mail and open a browser to gmail when I click it or something like that. So, any way of doing this?

Ubuntu :: Java Audio Crash In Native Code

Oct 25, 2010

java: /build/buildd/openjdk-6-6b20-1.9/build/../pulseaudio/src/native/org_classpath_icedtea_pulseaudio_Stream.c:680: Java_org_classpath_icedtea_pulseaudio_Stream_nativ e_1pa_1stream_1cork: Assertion `stream' failed.

I keep getting this error about 1-10% of the time when a Java application tries to play audio. When this happens, the whole JVM quits, which means the crash is in native code. I find it difficult to test my Java games, for obvious reasons, since I am a Java developer primarily. I use Eclipse 3.6 SR1 to develop my Java apps, and I'm a recent convert to Ubuntu from Mac OS X. EDIT: Whoops, forgot to mention that I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" x86_64 version.

Ubuntu Installation :: Disc Not Detecting Native Resolution?

Dec 14, 2010

I am planning on installing Ubuntu on my new laptop with a native resolution of 1920x1080 however the install disc (I booted into the "test") part, sets my resolution to 2048x1536.Keeping it on 2048x1536 cuts off about 50 pixels on the right side of my screen so it must not be right. So I tried changing it from the "Monitors" settings back to 1920x1080 and everything is so large and it is stretched horizontally. Is this just because I'm running the "try me" part, or is there something wrong with Ubuntu and my video card?

General :: Boot Native Usb And Run From Windows?

Mar 7, 2010

I want to set something up so I can have a pen drive and do all of the following:

1) Boot linux from the pen drive on systems that support usb boot devices.

2) boot from a CD that switches over to the usb drive and releases the cd (for systems that do not support USB booting)

3) Optionally run the same pendrive linux installation from windows

a) Huge preference for NO vmware or other emulation/virtualization environments

b) something like colinux or topoligilinux

c) big prefence for doing this with linux mint or at least ubuntu

d) bonus if I can do the windows part without admin priviledges on highly restricted systems like library computers

e) worst case scenario maybe could set it up in one of these ways

1) have cygwin and a seperate linux distro and just mount the home folder of one from the other - but prefer to not waste space duplicating applications etc.

2) I wanted to put a two and three here but I'm out of ideas.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: External Monitor Having Resolution Higher Than Native

Jan 2, 2010

I've got a little problem with my 9" netbook. It came preinstalled with Ubuntu (factory install), but I reinstalled it to get a fresh karmic as it was a second hand. The problem is, whenever I plug in an external monitor, rightclick on the display icon and click "Configure Display Settings..." both monitors go black and nothing responds. Weird thing though, is that sometimes the mouse appears on the second monitor. I need a solution for this, either creating a xorg file (I have no clue on how to do that) or some other solution that works.

My netbook resolution is 1024*600, the external monitor resolution is 1024*768. It should be noted that I had a similar problem on another Ubuntu laptop (NVIDIA drivers), but it had to do with the resolution height. My laptop had 1440*900 and my external monitor needed to have the height lower then 900.
For further information, this is what the system profiler says about my graphics card:Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller.I hope you guys can help me, as plugging in a netbook to an external monitor (or TV) is not uncommon to me I like doing that, even if there's no point in it.I hope I gave enough information on this, I'm willing to give more if needed of course
