Ubuntu Networking :: Compatibility Of Wifi Card- The Netgear Wg311v3?

May 18, 2011

I already have a wifi card- the netgear wg311v3. that had almost NO linux compatibility, so I won't make the mistake of buying any old wifi card again. What I want to know is, what's a good wifi card for Linux. Here are some requirements I have for it:

Preferably 802.11n support, but I could settle for "G" Out of the box support. As in, I don't have to use Ndiswrapper. Just pop it in, and let ubuntu do the rest I would prefer a USB based dongle, but PCI would be good too. I don't have any brand preferece.

Ubuntu Networking :: Netgear WG311V3 PCI Card Installed - Can't Get It To Work?

Feb 2, 2010

I have been searching through these forums the past couple of day as I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on my custom whitebox. I have had windows 7 on it in the past, but want something different now.

I guess my main question is if anyone knows a simple to install wireless card (pci or usb) for ubuntu 9.10 64. I currently have the Netgear WG311V3 PCI card installed, but I can not for the life of me get it to work under Ubuntu. I have tried numerous different methods from search google, these posts, etc. but I can not get any of them to work.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Wg111t Netgear Wireless Adapter To Work

Mar 5, 2010

i can't get my wg111t netgear wireless adapter to work. I followed the help thing by installing ndisgtk, which installed successfully. I was able to load up the file on the cd that also the help page said. The problem is that the computer won't load up the adapter as it would load up my cd's and flash drive. Here's how i installed ndisgtk. I installed the files ndiswrapper_common, ndiswrapper_1.9, and then the ndisgtk_0.8.5.All of these were for i386.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Networking Not Working At Work - Fine At Home ?

Aug 24, 2010

I just started having a problem with my 10.04 laptop a few days ago, maybe Thursday, last week. When the computer is plugged into my home network (standard sort of IPs) it works fine, but when I try to connect to my work network (130.15.90.XX) I am unable to pick up an IP. The router in my office is working fine, all the windows boxes can connect.

I've also noticed that when the computer is plugged in at work the notification icon for the networking indicates it is looking for a wireless connection (rather than the normal up/down arrows), even if wireless is deactivated

I can set a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces and everything works, so it seems to be a DHCP problem?

Fedora Networking :: Can't Access And Other Problems LiveCDs Work Fine?

Dec 21, 2009

I originally posted this in I kind of feel like no one is going to answer... is it because I mentioned Fedora? Since I'm trying out Fedora 12...maybe someone here can help me figure out why I have the problem in Ubuntu, but not Fedora? Here's the situation:I've been having very strange problems on Firefox in Ubuntu 9.10 for a few weeks now.haven't been able to, except for a few minutes....once..... and it never came back. This was when these problems had already been happening and after several tries to reach Fedora's site.

Other problems are just as strange but not so bad or consistent: Pages sometimes seem to randomly not be found or they are found on the wrong server or something. After several minutes, though, they usually go away after refreshing the page. One of the strange examples from the "not found" or error pages I got was when I tried reading and it told me it "could not be found on this server," but....the server and URL it listed were from! The address bar showed that it was trying to find the page on Google! No, I didn't copy and paste or type the address, I was in an already-working Wikipedia page that stopped working and thought it was on Google's servers! Isn't that weird? (I might have screenshots somewhere...)

Anyway, any ideas? I have tried creating new, empty profiles on Firefox, but they still cannot access Fedora's sites. LiveCDs work fine, though. Also, I copied and used a profile from my Laptop to here and it also cannot access it.I even tried System > Administration > Network tools and tried Fedora's site in the Ping tab and it usually works just fine (sometimes it gets nothing, though). Also, I'm not using wireless or dial-up.By the way, I've only been using Linux a couple of months now, so sorry if I don't know stuff

Ubuntu Servers :: Get Sobdomains To Work Fine On A Test Mache, But Domain/site To Work Due To Lack Of DNS Support At The Moment?

Feb 6, 2011

I'm not to sure this is the place I should post this, but couldn't find any place for it to fit. So here is the deal..I am running 10.10 with the standard LAMP setup. I am running a drupal 7 site no problems. What I need to do is run a multi site sub directory. ( So far the best I can do is get a directory index of the second site (, but cant run the installer. (I did the symbolic link to the doc root of the drupal install.)If I type in the url I get not found. I placed an index.html test page and it renders fine. I think I'm close but just not there yet.

Any ideas from anyone? I can get Sobdomains to work fine on a test mache, but sadly I need the domain/site to work due to lack of DNS support at the moment. I tried to get some info from the drupal forum, but everything always points to subdomin setups. I also posted over there, but it seems like the forums have very little support and are a bit on the slow side.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Works Fine In 9.04 / Doesn't Work In 9.10

Mar 18, 2010

Is there a backport of some sort that i should install? The fixes I've found all point to editing the xorg.conf file, but of course, Karmic doesn't have an xorg.conf file.I've tried reinstalling the Compiz files, reinstalled the open-source video drivers, installed/uninstalled fglrx drivers a few times, rebooted dozens of times.

Ubuntu :: Usb Webcams Work Fine In Cheese But Not In Skype?

Nov 4, 2010

I wonder if someone might be able to help with a webcam problem I'm having (or point me in the direction of a previous thread on the subject?). I'm trying Xubuntu on my wife's elderly Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. It's working beautifully for the most part. But I've tried two different usb webcams, both of which are recognized by Cheese but don't work in Skype.

In Skype, what happens is that Skype is aware that a webcam is present. It does NOT say "no webcam detected". But in Skype Options, when I visit the Options for "Video Devices", and click on the "Test" button to test the webcam, nothing happens at all.

And when I make a test video call to a friend, with video turned on, all the friend sees is a black screen where the image should be, and a little turning symbol presumably to indicate "please wait for image to appear". It never appears.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: KeyTouch Looks Fine But Media Keys Don't Work

Jan 2, 2011

I have a logitech dinovo wireless keyboard with those extra multimedia keys on it like Volume Up, Volume Down, and Mute. They didn't do anything so I installed KeyTouch. I was able to select my keyboard from the list in KeyTouch, and if everything was working right then at that point all my extra keys would work. But they still didn't do anything. So I went into the Keytouch editor to make my own custom profile. You click add to add a new key and then it asks you to press a key. So I press the key (Mute) and it recognizes it, and then you select what action you want it to do. I did this for Mute, Volume Up and Volume Down. But yet they still don't work!

Now obviously it detects my key presses (keycode) just fine when I added the new key. So it should do the assigned action when I press that key. What I *want* it to do is mute or change the volume of the Headphones. But as I said that wasn't working at all for some reason. So to narrow it down I instead set the Mute key to simply launch firefox. But it still doesn't work. So there is some disconnect... in the keytouch editor it's detecting the key just fine, but afterwards when you press Mute it doesn't do the action it's supposed to.

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Play Person Of Interest .mkv Other .mkvs Work Fine

Oct 9, 2010

So I downloaded the HD version of Person of Interest: [URL] It has h264 video and AVC audio contained within a Matroska file. For some reason I can't get it to play in either Totem or mplayer, even though I've been able to play other Matroska files fine in both of them. Totem does nothing but display a black window. gmplayer displays a blue screen and there's a silouette where the control buttons are supposed to be. Also it takes about 20 seconds to close it. When I try to get the properties on it, it says "Creating properties window. You can cancel this operation by clicking cancel." and it won't show the properties no matter how long I wait. When I try to run it in mplayer from the command line, it says a bunch of these:

[h264 @ 0xb40fa0]AVC: nal size 29922113
[h264 @ 0xb40fa0]no frame!
Error while decoding frame!

All at the same hex location, but with seemingly random "nal sizes." Then it ends with this: Too many audio packets in the buffer: (4097 in 1648030 bytes).Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed? For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.

A:   0.1 V:   0.0 A-V:  0.107 ct:  0.000   0/  0 ??% ??% ??,?% 421 0
Exiting... (End of file)

Running Debian 5.0.6 and MPlayer dev-SVN-r26940. See if you can run it, it's available under a Creative Commons license from the link above.
