View 1 RepliesI am trying to find the ip address on my Red Hat Linux box, but there is no ipconfig file in my /sbin/ directory. I did a 'locate ipconfig' in the terminal and the only files I got were plipconfig, sipconfig.py/c/o, plipconfig.8.gz, ipconfig.h. I dont know what happened to my ipconfig file. Where I can get a new copy of it?

I am not home currently, but I can access my router (uses DD-WRT), and my Media Center Machine (Ubuntu 10.10) via SSH. For some reason, when I rebooted my router via SSH my personal PC (with Natty) did not renew an IP.Is there a way I can use magic packets or any other method from my other Ubuntu machine that I have remote access to, to force that other machine to renew it's IP?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently working with wireless network kernel module.
This device initialiy gets its IP address by using DHCP,
but the problem is sometimes the new IP assigned for internal reason.
So what I want to do is assigning new(changed)IP address into exsiting
interface, or occuring DHCP renew event to cause update IP from kernel
level. This shold be done without user's intervention, so whenever the
kernel module detects IP changed(via underlying wireless
communication), it automatically correct update its IP address.
Q1) any functions or api to cause DHCP renew event from kernel level?
Q2) or any functions or api to assign IP address to specific interface?
I have a dynamic Internet connection. My eth0 is configured to DHCP client. I need to rum one personalized command all time the dhclient renew the lease. I have a program that update the /etc/hosts with the new IP and I need to run this command when dhclient receive one lease update.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhy trying to avoid ranting about my Linksys router, I'll try and keep things short. I have a Linksys router in which the default firmware was terrible and would not correctly renew its DHCP lease. After getting feed up with that I flashed dd-wrt on the router and now it works better but randomly DNS queries would stop being resolved. To rule out the chances that it is my ISPs DNS servers I switched my DNS to openDNS, same problem happens (although I have to admit openDNS is a lot better than what my ISP has).
Anyways I'm about feed up with it and about an inch away from drop kicking the thing out my window. To avoid that I figured I will give it one more change and instead of using my Linksys as my network gateway I'll move all of that to my home server, and make the Linksys just an wireless AP. Besides setting up DHCP, DNS, and iptables on the server is there anything else I will need to know and setup on the server to make this work?
Side note anyone using openSUSE for DHCP know if setting up reserved IPs for certain MAC address is possible?
I have a dedicated control computer that can only be accessed with web-browser (with its ip-address). My DHCP-server gives a static ip-address to the control computer (base on its mac-address). Somehow and after some time the control computer looses its ip-address (can't ping to it any more) ... and then I have to reset the control computer to get it to pick up the ip-address ... this is not a good solution since the control computer is not nearby. is there a way to force the control computer to renew its ip-address based on its mac-address
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering, is there ever more than one build of a given Ubuntu release (but with the same major/minor version)? That is, if I download X.10 a month after it comes out, and then I download it a few days before the next version is released, say, will it be bit-for-bit the same as the one I originally downloaded? Or does the Ubuntu team do new builds over time, fixing things, etc.?

So is there anything I should know about before I do this? Any bugs or things that hasn't been fixed yet?And beta 2 is that latest one right? And the last one before the final release?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have 9.10 ubuntu installation - I have updated all packages and it is up-to-date. However, I have a issue with the latex installation, not latex so to say, it is the pstricks
Installed package :
texlive-pstricks
version - 2007.dfsg.17-2ubuntu1
Also it is the latest version available in the repo. However, this is not the
latest in pstricks. I find that version in the new 10.04 is 2009-7ubuntu3
Is there some way to get this installed in 9.10? Or I have to upgrade my whole installation?
Is there a functional equivalent to xcode for the new Lucid Lynx release of Ubuntu (10.04)? I'm just beginning to write a IPHONE app and require a proper IDE, but don't want to use mac os.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI started using Ubuntu in 2006 and it provided me with pretty much all the functionality I needed with a very intuitive interface and and organization (esp the package system.) I replaced all my windows installations with Ubuntu and never looked back.. I consider myself a somewhat computer savvy user but with each new release, I've encountered numerous problems that severely disrupt the normal functionality of a basic OS and cannot be solved in a straight-forward manner. Some example I'll list:
1) GRUB. I got a new Dell Laptop with Windows 7 and I wish to dual boot.I repartition and install Ubuntu 9.10. OK, so far so good. When Lucid came out, I upgraded. Then I reboot and I'm greeted with garbled letters instead of the usual GRUB screen. So far, I have not been able to resolved this issue other than to use the live CD to boot and/or use Supergrub to manually boot to Linux or Windows. I'm now dependent on this CD to properly boot my system EVERY TIME. I've even tried reinstalling GRUB after successfully booting using the CD but grub still refuses to return (now I'm greeted with "Missing Operating System" if I'm not booting using a CD.)
2) WiFi. The only internet access available at my apartment is WiFi. Unfortunately, wifi does not work out of the box on my system. Downloading the third-party drivers to get wifi working REQUIRES an active internet connection (lame catch-22 situation.) So I'm forced to plug into the wired ethernet connection at my workplace instead every time I need to reinstall and restore my internet connection. With so much of the world converting to WiFi, it really makes sense to have access to WiFi after installing from CD.
I don't care if I have to download a much larger CD filled with tons of useless junk; if anyone know of any sort of "expanded version" of the Ubuntu installation cd with a greater variety of WiFi drivers included so I don't have to go through this lame and convoluted procedure just to get my Wifi working every time a reinstall is necessary, I would need it ASAP!
I get this message when clicking the upgrade button in Update manager. I am attempting to upgrade from 10.10. The full message is as follows:
Could Not Download the release notes Please check your internet connection
My internet connection is fine on that machine, I just updated packages on it seconds before I saw 11.04 was available and can also browse and such
First off, want to say that there is no problem at all with Unity as such, I think it makes a great effort to get out of my way, and it's definitely a step forward as far as interfaces go. Once you've relearned where everything is it's much cleaner and easier to navigate than Gnome2. However, the latest release of Ubuntu doesn't work for me or my laptop. At all. My laptop is a HP Probook 5310m.
List of problems:
1. Closing the laptop lid makes the graphical interface freeze. I can solve this by writing "sudo service gdm restart" but then all my programs disappear.
2. Suspending makes me unable to find my 3G modem once I wake it up again.
3. Suspending makes me unable to use my ethernet card
4. Unplugging the power source makes unity crash sometimes. Happened twice when I also unplugged the NIC.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIf I install a server edition and after that I install Gnome and all other ubuntu-desktop applications on that server. Will these
applications be supported through the whole server support time? In other words, what exactly does it mean that the server is supported for longer? Is the number or applications available to the server smaller than to the desktop?Or, similarly, could I build a Server-long supported desktop by hand?
I downloaded the latest release, burned a disk and successfully booted. When it comes time to choose a partition I don't have the option of replacing the old release. I can install in parallel leaving both but can't use the whole disk. Interestingly enough I CAN replace the windows installation. Of course I already have Grub installed but I don't see how this would affect installing. I read the article here [URL] and it seems I may have missed a step. However it's implied I will lose the current Grub installation. Is that the case?

The Ubuntu website doesn't include the md5 checksums for the current 10.04 matrix. The forum announcement thread also makes no mention of these checksums. That means servers could be distributing defective isos and on day one, that could mean tens of thousands of downloads could be defective. I have to say that md5sums have been a mainstay of Linux ISO distribution for a decade, this despite whatever flaws one might find in it, yet for the last few releases of U, md5sum data are the hardest data to locate on the Ubuntu website, and on release day, they are critical.

I've tried several mirrors during the last couple of days but still I can't get it to work.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-boot system (Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04) both 64-bit running on an HP pavilion laptop. I installed this dual-boot system only a few months ago and have continually added some new packages and updates with very few problems. However, now something has happened that really baffles me --- An error in the bootup process that I have never seen before and one that I have been unable to solve.
The problem I had been doing some programming (in Python) and after having the laptop on for several hours, I did a graceful shut down. Then, the next morning I turned on my laptop and the following is what happened:
[Code]...
I have tried the recommendation in B. to use 'chkdsk /r' in Windows. This took about 3 hours and had no effect on the error message. I also had made backups using "Back in time" which I tried (at least some of the directories) but none of these recovered directories had any noticeable effect on the error. This seems to be some basic device mounting problem that for some reason occurs only with the latest release and was triggered by some unknown event
Ubuntu 10.04, I transferred a Word Processor document via SSH2 from kristin's laptop to my desktop computer on my network the other day. Since that time, both computers have been shutdown. Today, I wanted to open the document and got the following notice.

Open document Read Only or open a copy of the document for editing. All I can figure is, maybe I didn't exit the gFTP application properly. How do I release this lock on this file on my computer?
