Software :: Get CUPS Running On A Gentoo Install / It Complains About Libgnutls.so.13 Not Existing When Start?

May 21, 2009

I'm trying to get CUPS running on a Gentoo install. When I try to start it it complains about libgnutls.so.13 not existing. I googled it and updated gnutls to the latest version and tried a sym-link to libgnutls.so.26.11.5, all to no avail.

Software :: CUPS And Multiple USB Printers - Complains About Missing "filter"

Aug 3, 2011

For starters, I'll warn you that I installed linux on a pc for the first time yesterday. With the guidance of a pro, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 desktop 32-bit with CUPS 1.4.6. I have three Samsung ML-2525 USB printers attached. They all three show up with lsusb:

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04e8:3297 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04e8:3297 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04e8:3297 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd

When I go into CUPS, it shows one. I've tried to add another via bash and I can't seem to get that to work either. All three were plugged in when CUPS was started, so I've ruled out that thing where it doesn't see new USB devices. I set up three printers in CUPS (via the web interface) and (no surprise!) they all print to the same printer. I then tried to force them to go to the right places by shutting down CUPS, modifying cups.conf to inculde "FileDevice yes", restarting CUPS and using lpadmin to change the uri's to their /dev/ filedevices. That doesn't work. You probably knew that already, didn't you!?

[code]...

Then the jobs just sit in their queues forever. (I let it sit for 25 hours, they are still "processing").

Jan 21, 2010

1) i can't start CUPS server with /etc/init.d/cups restart "file not found", there is a cups@ link in /etc/init.d.

2) when i install dcp7010 cupswrapper

dpkg -i cupswrapperDCP7010-2.0.1-2.i386.de
it ends with
" lpinfo: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt
lpadmin: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt"
(connection to server not possible, refused)

3)[URL] doesn't work.

4)foomatic-gui can't find the installed dcp7010 lpr-driver

brdcp7010lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb, (a couple of days ago it did)

This is frustrating because it worked in etch and worked for awhile in lenny. The dcp7010-scanner does work.

Software :: Apache Won't Start (Gentoo): Could Not Find IPv4 Address

Jul 23, 2011

I installed it the standard way using emerge/portage, but it fails to start:

Code:

alpha skyer # /etc/init.d/apache2 start
* Caching service dependencies ... [ ok ]
* Starting apache2 ...
apache2: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed for alpha
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName [ !! ]
* ERROR: apache2 failed to start

I'm used to have Apache unable to find pc's FQDN, as I don't set it, and it works without it.

From /var/log/apache2/error.log

Code:

[Sat Jul 23 06:41:12 2011] [alert] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: mod_unique_id: unable to find IPv4 address of "alpha"

Computer has IPv4 address set. I suspect that the nature of the problem is in the fact, that alpha has two network interfaces (it is used as router also). I've checked Apache conf files, but didn't find any meaningful directives to set interface or something similar.

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Won't Print - Options Grayed Out / Cups Not Running

May 10, 2010

I'm not sure how it happened but recently when trying to print to a previously added printer, the printer does not show up. Most options are grayed out and clicking troubleshooter tells you that CUPS is not started. Latest guide I could find is for Ubuntu 9.04, options for restarting cups in 10.4 are slightly different (see below) To restart cups from terminal window in Ubuntu 10.4:sudo /etc/init.d/cups restartI looks like in Ubuntu 9.04 the command was /etc/init.d/cupsys restart. This should show the printer and open up the grayed out menu options, allowing you to print normally again.

After all, things look quite normal in the directory /etc/rc3.d, which has the appropriate links S20samba, S20lighttpd and S50cups, all of them working when I use them directly. But wait! Ubuntu uses updstart now, does it? I have yet to understand what that means to the classic startup scripts in /etc/init.d.

"The CUPS print spooler does not appear to be running. To correct this, choose System->Administration->Services from the main menu and look for 'cups'". System->Admin.->Services does not exist. Searching on the net led me to believe that /etc/init.d/cups start would start cups for me, but that does not seem to be happening.

Ubuntu Installation :: New Grub From 10.10 Will Not Start The Existing Kubuntu 10.04?

Dec 18, 2010

I have been successfully triple-booting Windoze and 2 varieties of Linux on my desktop for some years now with very few problems. The latest configuration which I have been using for 6 months or so is Kubuntu 10.04 & Ubuntu 10.04. The last version installed was Kubuntu 10.04 and on installation it's version of grub found Ubuntu 10.04 no problem (other than a minor problem with partition numbering which was manually fixed) and all was well.

I have just upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (by clean install rather than version upgrade) and the new grub from Ubuntu 10.10 will not start the existing Kubuntu 10.04, I just get "error: file not found".The grub.cfg file from Ubuntu 10.10 is completely different (copy attached) but the partition references & numbers etc. are correct so why will the existing Kubuntu 10.04 not start ? Windoze starts OK.

Ubuntu :: Existing Rsync Running And Copying Info To Hard Drive?

Nov 30, 2010

I have a home network that includes a couple of computers {A, B, C, D}. currently, I have a cron jon that runs every minute and updates (using rsync) the hard drives of computers {B, C, D} with the contents of hard drive {A}. So far everything works great, as hard drive {A} barely has any information on it. Now, I am about to copy a lot of information (about 8 GBs) to hard drive {A}. Naturally, the cron job will run (as it runs every 1-min) and try to 'sync' the contents with hard drives {B, C, D}.

Given my network (100Mbit/sec), there is no way the cron job will be able to 'copy' the contents to hard drives {B, C, D} in one minute. It will take much more time. Does this situation create a problem? meaning, will cron re-run a new rsync instance 1min later, even though an existing rsync process is running and still copying information to hard drives {B,C,D}? Will my backups be hurt / slowed down tremendously because of this?

Ubuntu Security :: 631/tcp CUPS / Close Port / Stop This Service / Tell Update Manager To Shove Cups?

Feb 27, 2011

Running: Ubuntu 10.10

I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:

- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....

Debian :: Cups Not Starting With The Server / Getting Error Unable To Read Configuration File '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - Exiting?

Feb 24, 2011

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message

cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!

The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.

My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .

Ubuntu Servers :: CUPS Not Forwarding To Other Polled CUPS' In 10.04?

Mar 22, 2011

I've been trying to figure this out for longer than I care to admit. We upgraded our print server (sysadmin) to 64 bit lucid and that moved our cups server from 1.3.7 to 1.4.3. We have a remote server that is still 1.3.7 (printhost1) but version difference doesn't seem to be relevant to the problem.

If I'm on console on sysadmin and do an lpr to a printer on printhost1, everything is copacetic. However, If I'm on a host that specifies "ServerName sysadmin" in its "/etc/cups/client.conf" access_log on sysadmin shows:

172.16.10.52 - - [22/Mar/2011:11:11:40 -0500] "POST /printers/103_hp4250 HTTP/1.1" 200 306 Create-Job client-error-not-authorized

and error_log shows:
E [22/Mar/2011:11:11:40 -0500] Returning IPP client-error-not-authorized for Create-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/103_hp4250) from 172.16.10.52

We've been using this method of sharing printers between locations for years and years so it not working now is a surprise.

cupsd.conf on sysadmin looks like this and is as open as I can imagine:

ServerName sysadmin
ServerAlias *
ServerAdmin webmaster
FileDevice Yes
SystemGroup staff
LogLevel info
code....

Additional symptoms are that only printers locally defined on sysadmin show up when the client uses System>Administration>Printing in gnome. Same thing when you browse printers in windows on our samba domain controller that backends on CUPS.

I just know that it's something simple that's going to make me facepalm but I'm at a loss.
