Ubuntu :: Indicator Sound Service Not Running In User Account
Jun 22, 2011
I have a user account on my laptop which does not display the sound-service icon in my notification area applet (Ubuntu 11.04). If I try to start /usr/lib/indicator-sound/indicator-sound-service manually, I get the following error:
Code:
libindicator-WARNING **: No watchers, service timing out.
** (process:5612): DEBUG: Service shutdown !
In the many months I've had this account on this box, and as a result of the many minor mods I've made to the account, I've somehow bollixed something in the account setup which interferes with the startup of the service. I created a new account on the system, and the sound service icon displays properly, so I know it's not a system problem. Both the new, bare account and my personal account are in the audio group. As a work-around, I have an icon for gnome-volume-control on my top panel, which works pretty well.
to turn off the sound icon in the indicator-applet since it never loads right on the theme for one user and i already set gnome-volume-control-applet to run at startup to replace it i just cant figure out how to remove it without un-installing it which would effect all usersedit seems resizing the panel will make the default icon work so i make a script using gconf-tool to change the size 2 times at startup to fix it
I've written an article on my site which lays out steps for installing Wine and running it under its own, separate user account, so that Windows applications cannot access personal files (particularly those in your home directory).[URL}..i'm hoping that there are people on this forum who know Ubuntu inside-out, as I'd like to know how effective the described method is at trapping Windows applications so that they cannot read or write personal files or directories.
The way I understand it, once the process is running under user account wine, it's stuck with the access privileges of user wine. But are there ways in which a rogue application could break out of this prison and gain access to whatever it wishes? I'm guessing that such behaviour would mean someone customising Windows software to recognise Linux, and that such a thing is very unlikely, but I'm still interested to hear what gurus of the Ubuntu internals think of this method.
I just installed Slackware 32bit 13.1. I created a new user with everything default. When I startup and logoff, I hear the startup and logoff sound. But other than that I have no sound in my user account I made. So I did some googling and found this command
Code:
So I logged in the terminal as root and gave it a try. Logged out then back in the user. And I still have no audio.
In the past, I've installed Internet services as daemons and as xinetd.d with no problems. Those approaches do not meet my needs. And, perhaps, nothing will.
- the service was converted from VB-6 to wxPython. It has a GUI which is accessed with either "remote desktop" or VNC. - the wxPython service works on Windows and can be accessed from other hosts on my LAN - the wxPython service works on CentOS and Fedora, but can only be accessed from within the server host. Even from other user-ids. But, I cannot get to it from other hosts. - ipchains AKA firewall ports are marked for INPUT. - The server host uses autologin to fire up a useid in group "user". I do not want it running as "root". the .bash_profile fires the service up. - the service is heavily mult-threaded, and supports devices connected to serial ports asynchronously with the ephemeral port threads (all this works).
There are some programming solutions that I would rather not develop. - a proxy service that runs under xinetd.d. - separate the GUI code from the Internet and serial port code. Allocate a "control" port for remote GUI control. a'la SAMBA & SWAT
Is there any hope, that I can run it as is, by doing some network configuration stuff.
I am running Debian Lenny with the default Gnome desktop. When I set up a new user the sound is not available. It says the device in not installed. I have used the Gnome system menu as follows.System, Administration, Users and Groups, then used the add user button and entered the appropriate info. I then went and clicked on the properties button and then the User Privileges section and checked off the "use audio devices" button. Still no sound. When I go to System, Preferences, Sound, Devices, and do the sound tests I get report that device is not installed.
When I am logged in to the user (jon) that I set up when doing the D.Lenny install, the sound on all various media play back works fine. There is one with 1 exception when loged in to this user(jon). I can not get any sound from the system sounds like select check box = toggle .wav, chose menu item = beep, etc. It would be realy nice to know how to repair or configure tis issue as well.under system info, pci devices it lists as follows Multimedia audio controller, Intel Corp 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW. Mother board is a ECS 915P-A2 and I guess about 2007 or so vintage. 1 G mem installed and a P-4 2.66 chip. It has the sound built in to it. It works fine on WinXP.
I've got a strange problem: when I run Frozen Bubble from my user account, I get no sound, but the same game has sound with my wife's account and the root account.
EDITED TO ADD: My user account has sound for DVDs through Kaffeine, Mplayer, etc. And the system sounds are working just find.
In my top right corner I got all my Ubuntu appindicators that come with Ubuntu 11.04. I also have Dropbox, caffeine and screenlets. Problem is that I cant click on dropbox, caffeine, battery indicator, wlan or sound indicator until I first click on messages menu and slide over to appindicator that I need. When screenlets appindicator is not present there is no problem. Its the same when I had Jupiter installed.
I have a problem with the Google search box top right corner in Konqueror, when entering search I recieve an error page "Unsupported Protocol" Google asks for ioslave or kioslave. Also when highlighting text on a page and right clicking with the mouse no search option is given. I created a new user and all works as it should for the new user. What is wrong with my user account? I have reset default values in Konqueror setup.
Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.
I have a user account which is required to run as part of the operating system and as a service. I am currently attempting to install my companies software on an Ubuntu desktop via wine just for the purpose of finding out if it's do-able.
Is there a way, in Ubuntu, for a user account to be given the local rights assignment to act as part of the operating system and to function as a service in the background?
I have been asked to install an application using a service account on a RHEL 5.6 Server. In the past I always installed as root and have not used service accounts.
The desktop search has stopped working in Gnome.I get a message that says 'Search Service not running' with a button that says 'Start Search Service'.When I click the button nothing happens
I'm using Lucid and after some update my sound indicator got vanished. And now it doesn't show any any controls ( buttons) while some track playinging in rhythmbox or anyother audio player.
I installed indicator-applet-complete and all the other indicator apps (applet, datetime, message, me). I know the me menu is suppose to show my user name and icon above the text box but I'm not seeing it. is there some way to fix this? Also the text box is dark, I've seen screenshots where is is white. The text I type would be easier to see if the box was white. Any ideas on how to fix this?
(btw how do I post an image to show you guys what i'm talking about? do I need to upload to another service and link to it?)
Apache is run as www as is all the files/folders. People are uploading via FTP, scp, so the problem is if I chmod so everyone can read, then rsync as a user it works until new files are added which then my ; if rsync fails with a permission denied. Now I can add a chmod in the script so everyone can read, but since www can already read, I figured I would just change my script to use www. I added the ssh key to his authorized_keys file, but when I try to just ssh in I see this in the secure file;
server sshd[29539]: User www not allowed because account is locked sshd[29539]: Failed none for invalid user www from ip port 54983 ssh2
Now I read a few places already saying I need to add a password to the account, etc. but before I jump and try all I read, 1st major one, will this now break apache? Will this affect any startup things, etc. and .... will that unlock that user for ssh in or is there another preferred method?
I upgraded to Maverick things generally went well - but I noticed TWO sound controls and removed one - later after a reboot I no longer have any. It will appear once I click on System/Preferences/Sound, but otherwise it doesn't show up on the desktop bar. I checked under the Add to Panel feature but no luck - any ideas how to get it back?
Rhythmbox now shows up in the sound indicator menu and this has doesn't close if music is playing. I don't really use Rhythmbox to play music so I leave it on mute, butI do use it to manage my iPod and it not closing has caused me nothing but problems. I've looked and looked and cannot find a way to turn it off. Is there any solution to this?
I installed the gmusicbrowser to check it out, however it seems to have taken banshees spot in the unity indicator.Even after uninstalling and purging the application it stays in there as a broken entry,.
I have an annoying problem. It started with the network icon in the indicator applet in gnome-panel. It just disappeared! Somehow I managed to get my network icon back (perhaps after a restart), but as soon as it showed up, my sound icon disappeared.
I followed some advice I saw somewhere that said to add another indicator applet. When I did I had my network icon on my pre-existing indicator applet and a sound indicator in the new one, but no network icon. Because I needed the sound icon, I closed the original. But, I'm still stuck with no network icon now. This is pretty frustrating.
I recently installed likewise 6.0 on a Ubuntu 10.04 box and I was able to login as a Domain user. However my domain user account is not showing on the "User Settings" panel (I can only see locally created accounts). And if try to change login shell by typing "chsh", then it tells me user "DOMAINusername" does not exist in /etc/passwd.
i've just installed openSUSE 11.3 on my dell studio xps 1640. but i have problem with my WLAN . it's a WLAN 1640 mini-card and i think there is no problem with driver. because it seems that it's installed correctly but i can't see any wireless networks (it says "Device is not ready"). is there any suggestions?by the way, when i turn my wireless to on (it's a touch key not a switch) only my bluetooth indicator is enabled not my wifi indicator.
I wish to start TeamViewer as a service in Ubuntu. In Windows I can load it as a service and remotely enter password at login screen. Is it possible with Ubuntu?
I need a script that is able to check if a service is running or not. It has to do it automatic since it is for restarting a GameServer.
I tried to make one myself, but since the .x86 file has the same name for every server, it is hard to know a way to check if the server is running with the right process.
Is there a way to make a script which is able to check if a service is running (service has same name, but using other ports)
Running 10.04, just installed a ton of updates from Update manager.Printer is HP Officejet 6210Everything working fine up until after installing updatesWhen I try to print I get error message. I recently created a new user account in ubuntu linux, and created a file called xsession so that I can boot directly into xmbc when I log into that account. Is there anyway to delete the home folder for that account. I can view the file but when I try to delete it is says I do not have apporite permisions to delete the file.
I removed the account and deleted the group but it still shows up when I type in the address /home/xmbc
Is there anyway I can delete this file. It also will not let me create any new user accounts is there any way I can fix these prolbems without totaly reinstalling the system.
