Ubuntu :: Does'nt Display The Programs Or Folders Open On The System?
May 12, 2010
i'm having a problem with my bottom panel, after changing from ubuntu 9.10 to ubuntu lucid lynx it does'nt display the programs or folders open on the system
I know that Linux is open source but there must be ways of creating non-open source programs to be run on a Linux system? Does such a thing exist and/or have a name? Would any source code that has been compiled be unable to be read by anyone properly unless the soruce code was released?
The Ext 4 file system of the partition (dev/sdb1) is corrupted. When I seek to repair this using the boot repair tool it is unable to resolve this. I admit that I don't fully understand the problem - except that I'm unable to open and use programs.
I'm having sporadic issues with the openoffice.org program. Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.
I have the following scenario that doesn't seem to work normally. I have a windows 7 pc from which I am using putty to connect to my other linux servers (all running redhat 5 and 6). So here is the scenario that works and one that does not work. And I'm trying to figure out the one that does not work. Scenario that works:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1. echo $DISPLAY localhost:10.0
I run xclock and I see it pop up on my windows 7 pc. I am using xming on windows 7 to help me populate the display from linux to windows. One that does not work:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1. Then from Linux_Server_1 I ssh into Linux_Server_2. echo $DISPLAY <no output>
I try to setup $DISPLAY with localhost:10.0 or 0.0 or even my windows 7 pc ip address:0.0 ....etc Then when I try to run xclock I doesn't work.
I get these error messages: Error: Can't open display: <ip of display>
Also as a side note all our Linux servers are sitting on one subnet. My pc is sitting on another subnet. I use vpn to connect to the subnet where the servers sit from my pc.
when I click on any folder under places. for example if I click on my home folder or video folder. Or any folder under places. I get a document viewer message in Red. Saying "Unable to open document" "cant open directory" how I can fix this?? im on 11.04
I installed Open Office 4 on Debian 8 but when I run the program I get this error message.
root@localhost:/home/paul# openoffice4 No protocol specified No protocol specified /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice.bin X11 error: Can't open display: Set DISPLAY environment variable, use -display option or check permissions of your X-Server (See "man X" resp. "man xhost" for details)
Open Office works fine when I run the command "startx" in the Konsole but so far I haven't been able to configure it.
I have a 3TB home server storing all my files and a mix of XP, Vista & Ubuntu clients on a Gigabit network. When I access a folder with JPEG photos on the XP or Vista machines and I have them set to display thumbnails that is exactly what I get. The thumbnails load nice and fast. When I access the same folders on the Ubuntu machines with "icon view" it only displays a black icon that says "JPG" but if I copy that folder over to a local drive on the Ubuntu machines then the thumbs display just fine. Does anyone have any idea how to change this on the Ubuntu machines so they load thumbnails for networked photos as well?
New ubuntu user here, and i feel 100% comfortable with it now other then command line
i love it, feels better then windows, and im in awe at how fast it boots
i have 2 gripes only, that im hoping can be fixed!
is there anyway to make ntfs hidden fils hidden again?
i have a storage partition that i use on windows, and now ubuntu, the problem is theres all sorts o wierd ****
like "system voume information, RECYCLEBIN-O1" and wierd crap like that
its usually hidden in windows, but visible and clickable in ubuntu
is there some way to hide these files and folders? i think windows needs them, but they look so bad and ruin my folder organization
and also, is there some way to have my storage partition always mounted? each time i restart i lose my music library in rhythembox, and have to redirect it to my music folder on my storage drive.
We have a digital signage appliance built on SUSE 11.3 with a LAMP server that uses the flashplayer application to play a .swf file from localhost. It is a AOpen GP7A mini pc that has the nVidia drivers loaded. We have lots of customers that have been running the exact same system for over 6 months (we image the drive for each sale).
For some reason, my last customer is seeing the following problem shown below, and this linux configuration is way over my head. Everything else is working (local LAMP server is working, communicating with our production servers to get information works, etc). I have verified that it is screen 0 that is running (at least it shows with Ctrl-Alt-F7). I thought that it may have occurred because of updating the software with zypper up. I had the customer rebuild from the image being careful not to upgrade the software. The result was the same. The pc is a newer version compared to my bench pc, but there are multiple other customers running that same version just fine. So I am not sure if it is
The command is issued by a php script that is run in a root cron job. As I said, it works great on all other customer pc's including my bench system. I also tried to execute the command on a ssh terminal as the root user with the same result. I also upgraded my bench pc and it still worked properly.
The command being executed is sudo env DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=/home/svision/.Xauthority flashplayer http://localhost/flash/sign.swf &
the result (when run in terminal) is: No protocol specified (flashplayer:15077): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

It functions perfectly well, but the Files & Folders object has as a feature a 'recent' section which displays recently opened files. This is much the same as a menu object available in Gnome, except with the latter you could clear recent files for security or privacy purposes - you cannot do this in Unit.I have found that if you drag a file from the 'recent' section in the Unity Files & Folders object to Trash it doesn't just delete the shortcut - it deletes the target as well.
It is not at all clear if and how you can configure the File & Folders and the Applications objects to display what you want rather than the default, and the inability to quickly and safely clear recently opened items is something I think is in need of a fix.
I have configured an instance in AWS EC2. I am trying to set the display back so I can run x apps. I login using ssh -xy -i...
export DISPLAY=XXX.XXX.X.XXX:0.0 echo $DISPLAY to verify xhost + xhost: unable to open display "XXX.XXX.X.XXX:0.0"
I have commented out nolisten tcp as suggested HERE I have modified /etc/gdm/custom.conf as suggested HERE Actually, the last suggested modifying /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, but that file didn't exist, so I added the line: DisallowTCP=false to /etc/gdm/custom.conf I rebooted, and still I get: xhost: unable to open display "XXX.XXX.X.XXX:0.0"
When I return to my plasma desktop from hibernating, the font display is broken - kind of stripes It affects all kde and gnome programs, and all window decorations, but f.e. chrome displays the webpages well. What could cause this, and how can I fix it? My system is a dell inspiron 1525 with intel 965gm graphics card running kubuntu 11.04 with no kde ppas enabled.
I am unable to open folders like Home,Desktop,Documents,Music .. the ones listed in the file menu. These folders can be opened individually but not through run command.
I did not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so I read on these forums that system-config-display would create one for me. I ran system-config-display and it created an xorg.conf. But now my display is all messed up!! So, I deleted the xorg.conf and nothing changed. Why on earth would the display still be messed up if I deleted the file that was causing it?? Does system-config-display change somethign else?
how I can gain access to folder in Ubuntus 9.10 terminal. when I use a command like ./ Documents or ~/ Documents The terminal only states that "There is a folder named Documents" but never lets me enter. I can create a folder using the mkdir command and I can navigate that folder as long as that terminal session is active. When I close out the terminal and try to reopen it denies acces the same way as mentioined above. Do I need to set some type of access permissions or?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, and I can't open any folders. Nor can I put any files onto my desktop. I read on another thread that you should try reinstalling Nautilus, so I did that, and nothing changed. I also tried to open a folder in the Terminal, in this case the downloads folder, and I got this.
(nautilus:2172): Eel-CRITICAL **: eel_preferences_get_boolean: assertion `preferences_is_initialized ()' failed Initializing nautilus-gdu extension ** (nautilus:2172): WARNING **: No marshaller for signature of signal 'UploadFinished' ** (nautilus:2172): WARNING **: No marshaller for signature of signal 'DownloadFinished'
I accidently bumped keys whilst in a folder and it changed the view to a "Split/Shared" view where I can have two different folders open at the same time. How do I change it back to just the single folder? I can upload a Screen Shot if needed.
Whenever I try to open a folder, it opens it in Gimp. Can anyone help? Here is the message I get when I try to open a folder: Opening failed: Is a directory. I tried uninstalling Gimp. I got this: Failed to execute default File ManagerFailed to execute child process "gimp" (No such file or directory)
When i was in Windows, i had absolutely no problem creating and running basic terminal C++ programs. I came to Ubuntu, and now I've got a big problem: I can't run any program that i make. I have tried making programs in Code::Blocks, CodeLight, MonoDevelop, and NetBeans. All 4 four are free IDE's from the ubuntu installer. I've created 4 programs, 1 on each, and they're all the EXACT same program. When i build it, they build just fine and run. When i release and compile it so it becomes an .exe program, i can't open it. I find the thing, double click, and nothing happens. I rightclick and choose Run, and nothing happens. I made a basic Hello World program, and i couldn't even run that. Is there an extra thing im supposed to install to allow me to run .exe or something?
(I have no doubt this had been asked before, but Googling has turned up numerous results - many of which are written with the assumption that you're a Linux Pro, which I'm certainly not. If there is a more relevant thread already active please point me towards it.)I'm looking for a tool, or console command, to tell certain programs to automatically open on a specific desktop. i.e. Instead of TweetDeck, Thunderbird and Pidgin all appearing on Desktop 1 when I open them up, I want Thunderbird to always live on Desktop 4, TweetDeck to always live on Desktop 3, etc.
my X server restarts and boots me to the log screen when I start programs. I recently took the Nvidia card out of my computer and put in an ATI card. This is of course after uninstalling the Nvidia drivers through the restricted drivers interface. This worked out very well but eventually I went back to Nvidia. I removed the ATI drivers put in the Nvidia card and installed/selected the Nvidia drivers just as I did when I did this the other way previously. However now when I start just about any program the entire X server boots me back to the login screen.
