Just put 11.04 on my core2 machine (3 GB ram, Nvidia 250 gts) and graphics just aren't right. Installed the recommended Nvidia driver, did updates. Where is my X to close apps? used to be at top right of running apps. Can't drag apps around by the top bar anymore. Enabled Desktop switcher and it doesn't work. Won't switch desktops. Are these bugs I'm experiencing or what?
View 4 RepliesYesterday I adjusted the position of the windows controls back to what it was before, by using the configuration editor to set apps / metacity / general / button layout to "menu:minimize,maximize,close". At the time everything seemed good, the buttons moved, and it all worked. This morning I rebooted back into Lucid Lynx Ubuntu 64 bit, and now I find there are no controls on the windows, and I cannot even click and drag them, or double click the title bar to maximize! I checked, and the string I altered is still the same. I can still move windows with Alt-F7 and the mouse, and can resize by dragging out the bottom right corner.

They both are missing the overlay controls.Here's an example link:The pbs kids site has the "BIG" button which allows me to go fullscreen, but then I just get audio on the 64bit machine. I haven't tested that on the netbook version yet.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora 11 installed on two different machines, one 32 bit and the other 64 bit. If I play an mp3 file in the 64 bit system---it doesn't seem to matter which player I use---then I can only start, stop, or go to the beginning or end of the selection. I can't advance the stream to some intermediate point. The slider display showing the position is greyed out. The same programs on the same file in the 32 bit system work normally and allow me to advance the position by using the mouse with the slider. This may have something to do with how gnome is configured on the two machines, but I can't figure out what is different.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was having problems with using sound in 9.04, and decided that I needed to upgrade to 10.04
So, did a bit of cleaning up, before doing a backup to another disk. In the process of cleaning up, I removed, what I thought was "just" sqlite, but it removed firefox, kmail, nautilus, networking, internet, just about all menus, the whole system is shot.
Fortunately, I use simple backup, and was able to 'see' that a full backup was done yesterday, and an incremental just before my 'clean up'. The sbackup only does /home , and system data held in /etc,/usr/local and /var , so not ALL of the system is in the tar files.
Now when I boot into Ubuntu, it just goes to a command prompt. To copy those .tar files to another drive on the same computer, I need to run nautilus or similar, but can't, as no internet. The same with sbackup, basically it won't run anything. I did try the 'recovery option in GRUB, still no go.
I do have Beyond compare on the Ubuntu box, and I _think_ it may be ok to run, and possibly copy those .tar files across. As it won't even do a 'mount' either, I can't copy to CD, or load a USB stick, etc, etc.
I'm 99% certain that the .TAR files will be all that I need. They have all the data, and all the config. type files.
Just wondering if there is any method to get Ubuntu 9.04 up and going again, like a restore point I guess. But, every time I tried using apt-get, it wanted the internet, which is not working on Ubuntu (fortunately I have XP on this same computer, and can connect).
The XP computer can't access the Ubuntu HDD, but Ubuntu can access the XP HDD, and copy to it, but ONLY if I can mount the XP drive first.
So, I guess even if I could do a mount of that XP HDD from Ubuntu, that will be a start.
The tray icons for many apps (especially QT apps) are missing! Important apps that become unusable after being minimized to tray - due to having no tray icon:
* Pidgin
* KeePass
* JungleDisk
Anyone know if this can be fixed? A workaround? An explanation? Is this a known (rather extremely serious I should say) bug?
Having used Lucid from day one without any problems, lately there have been a few niggles, first the Trash Can disappeared, since been restored, now my Clock preferences on the top panel has gone (You know, the Time, Weather, Location).And as I write this the off / on button has gone walkabout.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter resolving the issue with updating Fedora, I have a new issue and it that my clock (as well as the network status icon, etc) and apps tray have literally disappeared (as shown by the provided screen shot). The only way I can can switch applications is with alt+tab. Sorry if this may sound dumb if it is a simple fix, but I have looked around in System>Preferences/Administration and could not find anything.

I've been keeping my system up to date with slackware64-current.Google searches have turned up very little about this library. There is a sourceforge page that has no files and seems to be related to a google hosted script jsCore.js... but I don't think that's what's missing here. I've come across some vague references to this jscore library being part of webkit. Can anyone verify this? I updated my webkit library itself and found no apparent results. Perhaps jscore was removed in an update to Qt (both of the example applications mentioned above link to Qt) as it seems to have it's own webkit library, libQtWebKit.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI took the courage yesterday to install ubuntu 9.10. Internet was working absolutely fine (wireless), but brightness controls were not working (they still don't). So I went to this page https://wiki.ubuntu.co/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting, and ran following command(s) killall gnome-settings-daemon gnome-power-manager Now since then I cant get the internet working, and cant see the wifi connection on task bar. I have restarted the laptop but no avail.
PS: any help on how I can reduce the brightness of monitor. I am using SONY VIAO VGN FZ38M, with Nvidia 8400M GT. I have tried several threads and tried all sorts of things, like xbacklight, or somthing to do with sudo .VGA/LCD/brightness.etc.
I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.4. After the upgrade I noticed the entire title barding the window controls to minimize/maximize/close a window disappeared.Resizing/moving a window is not possible either.At first I thought something went wrong with the upgrade, so I did a full reinstall, but using the same home dir (sda5 mounted to /home). The problem remains.
I can temporarily fix it by changing the visual effects to normal or extra, but each time I restart I have to do this again. The controls appear at the right side, opposed to the left side which I would have expected from this release.I realized that this must be something in my home dir, so I created a new user. For this new user, everything appears as expected, so it's most likely some configuration file left from 8.10 which 9.4 doesn't like

The 15 year old boy is highly intelligent (whole family actually) and knows how to get around software parental controls with peer to peer, live disks, etc. There are several PCs - both windows and mac, and an X-box.
I want to set up the household with a router or similar solution that is smarter than the kid and his friends. I figure protecting the network is the most tamper proof, all-encompassing way to go. In the short term, I really want to lock that home net solid, while still allowing mom to do her facebook and the oldest to use the web for schoolwork. Dlink Securespot technology seems to be the best overall solution I have found so far. If there is something better, I'm hoping someone here can steer me to it.

I belong to a fly fishing club. We have tapes of fly tying sessions dating back to 1992. Since we are registered as an educational charter with the state, I would like to make the available to our web sight viewers for learning. The club owns all these tapes and they were filmed at club sponsored functions. There should be no copyright problems. I am in the process of converting them to digital.
I was wondering if anyone knows of an upload manager, either native or wine, that allows the control of upload speed? I have one of those broadband plans that severely restricts upstream bandwidth, and while I'm uploading there is no room left for upstream communication, so I can't do anything else online but upload (boring). If I can limit my upstream speed to, say, 20KBps, it essentially frees all my downstream bandwidth and I can actually use my computer.
Currently, I've only tried plowshare for uploading, and though it seems to work well, it doesn't allow shaping...
I have an Epson Perfection V200 Photo scanner.It works as you would expect in XP.In Ubuntu, using the flatbed, not the transparency scan, real whites (white paper backgrounds) come out noticeably blue.This is annoying anyway & especially when printing afterwards.Note that even the scanner white background (left) is blue.The dark blue (right) is where the paper pulls away from the glass when it overlaps the scan area.Many of the other applications have several colour-correction tools, but I didn't find any simple way of using them to fix my problem.
Is this a common problem?Is there any way I can dial it out, once & for all?Or an easy way of using the controls in iscan or AcquireImages?
