Ubuntu :: 9.04 Clobbered - Most Apps Now Missing

Sep 22, 2010

I was having problems with using sound in 9.04, and decided that I needed to upgrade to 10.04

So, did a bit of cleaning up, before doing a backup to another disk. In the process of cleaning up, I removed, what I thought was "just" sqlite, but it removed firefox, kmail, nautilus, networking, internet, just about all menus, the whole system is shot.

Fortunately, I use simple backup, and was able to 'see' that a full backup was done yesterday, and an incremental just before my 'clean up'. The sbackup only does /home , and system data held in /etc,/usr/local and /var , so not ALL of the system is in the tar files.

Now when I boot into Ubuntu, it just goes to a command prompt. To copy those .tar files to another drive on the same computer, I need to run nautilus or similar, but can't, as no internet. The same with sbackup, basically it won't run anything. I did try the 'recovery option in GRUB, still no go.

I do have Beyond compare on the Ubuntu box, and I _think_ it may be ok to run, and possibly copy those .tar files across. As it won't even do a 'mount' either, I can't copy to CD, or load a USB stick, etc, etc.

I'm 99% certain that the .TAR files will be all that I need. They have all the data, and all the config. type files.

Just wondering if there is any method to get Ubuntu 9.04 up and going again, like a restore point I guess. But, every time I tried using apt-get, it wanted the internet, which is not working on Ubuntu (fortunately I have XP on this same computer, and can connect).

The XP computer can't access the Ubuntu HDD, but Ubuntu can access the XP HDD, and copy to it, but ONLY if I can mount the XP drive first.

So, I guess even if I could do a mount of that XP HDD from Ubuntu, that will be a start.

CentOS 5 :: RPM Tail Chasing Clobbered Yum Upgrade

Mar 28, 2011

I have had update problems for a very long time in my desktop e-machine. Maybe since 5.3. Usually something about Gwenview and other things. And, while --skip-broken got other packages updated, sorry, an incomplete update just isn't acceptable. Because of this I stopped using Centos for a long time. Yesterday, I got ambition and gave it another try. I had a lot of yum upgrade failures when upgrading 5.4 to 5.5, using --skip-broken.

I decided to fix things or delete Centos completely. But, I like the idea of free R****t. I realize this may have been posted, but I had no luck finding it via Google, So I started Googling. I soon found the --disablerepo option, and playing with repos, got most of the failures to upgrade. But, still hung up on a lot of stuff, like 11 packages or more.

Next, I learned about yum-prioroties and setting repo prorities. Yum-priorities was already installed, but I did go in and set the priorities. Since Google has a lot of information on this, I will not repeat here. You go into the repo config files and add a priority number to each repo listing. Here is a script to display repo priorities that I found online, sorry, I lost the author:

Ubuntu :: Tray Icons Missing For Many Apps?

Apr 29, 2011

The tray icons for many apps (especially QT apps) are missing! Important apps that become unusable after being minimized to tray - due to having no tray icon:
* Pidgin
* KeePass
* JungleDisk

Anyone know if this can be fixed? A workaround? An explanation? Is this a known (rather extremely serious I should say) bug?

Slackware :: Failure Building Multiple Apps Due To Missing Library Jscore?

Jan 26, 2011

I'm having a problem building some applications (e.g. Qsynth and FreeCAD) with sbopkg relating to an unfound library named "jscore". I've been keeping my system up to date with slackware64-current.Google searches have turned up very little about this library. There is a sourceforge page that has no files and seems to be related to a google hosted script jsCore.js... but I don't think that's what's missing here. I've come across some vague references to this jscore library being part of webkit. Can anyone verify this? I updated my webkit library itself and found no apparent results. Perhaps jscore was removed in an update to Qt (both of the example applications mentioned above link to Qt) as it seems to have it's own webkit library, libQtWebKit.

Ubuntu :: Want To Block All QT Apps?

Aug 31, 2010

Perhaps I might be a minority demographic here, but I am. Is there a way and how? Ubuntu Software Center doesn't seem to have this option. I come from a long history of being a Windows power user, and I am picking up pretty quickly with this stuff. I find QT ones leave little screen droppings and it bugs me to no end. Some might not, but I like it to be kind of GTK pure. If I wanted a QT app I would have picked Kubuntu with KDE. I admit that it is kind of cool that you can run an app from another desktop and vice versa. I am not trying to start a flame war, nor am I dissing any of the developers that may have made some awesome QT application I may not know about. Is there another software center like thing I can install that at least combines all the QT and GTK ones into separate groups rather than making me fend for myself?

Ubuntu :: Kde Apps In Gnome?

I use some kde applications in gnome such as k3b, basket notes, kover kreator and amarok. These pull in a large amount of dependencies and need the occasional tweak to get them running smoothly. Would there be any advantage to this rather than installing them individually into gnome?

Ubuntu :: Not Working GTK Apps In KDE ?

Mar 9, 2011

I was forced (by an unrelated problem) to reinstall my Kubuntu 10.10 from scratch today, and now I'm having a very annoying problem with the look of GTK apps in KDE.

I know I have to install gtk2-engines-qtcurve to make them blend in, and I know I need to copy some gtkrc files to /root to make it work for apps needing root privileges (e.g. Synaptic).

This has done the job for 80%, but they still don't look the way I they used to in my previous installation (which was Kubuntu 10.10 as well). As you can see in the two attachments, in applications run as a normal user the menu bar is lighter than it should be, and in applications run as root the entire window is this light.
