Oct 27, 2010In my CentOS configuration, when I use vim6.3 to edit a file, then close it, and re-open it, my cursor starts out at the line where I last left off. In my cygwin (on Windows) configuration, when I use vim7.3, I don't get this behavior. The viminfo does exist and does seem to get read (because if I type '0 it will go to my last cursor location - but that is globally and could change the file being edited). I've also looked at the .viminfo file and see it getting updated as expected. In my .vimrc file, I have this:

Note that on the CentOS side if I open foo, then I open bar, then I open foo again, my cursor is in the right place for foo, whereas on cygwin if I do this, my cursor would be at the 1st line of foo.. If I were to type '0, it would actually switch to editing bar and put the cursor where I last left off. Anyhow, this all boils down to asking how I get my cygwin vim to act like my CentOS vim.

Jul 1, 2010Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

Jun 18, 2010I have one server that has Asterisk running.On front of that, I use DD-WRT router as gateway. As I have checked the log files, I saw that there is a specific IP Address that is continuously accessing the application and trying to authenticate to SIP with a series of extensions. This is like DoS attack for SIP. What I did was to block/drop the IP in DD-WRT using the iptables. I can see from the /proc/net/ip_conntrack that it is being "UNREPLIED". But my concern is that does it still uses a lot of bandwidth even though it is already being blocked?

May 1, 2010Am running Ubuntu NBR as the sole OS on my Dell Mini 9. Switched over in March to 9.10 NBR. Everything worked fine.Upgraded to 10.04 when it was released. It's awesome EXCEPT for this busy cursor thing.As soon as I log in, all the time my cursor is the spinning wheel of busyness.... It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations.If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.

Aug 11, 2010after update f12 to f13 geany stopped to work correctly on remote storage (sftp). Geany opens file correctly, but when I try to save, it saves empty file. I tried "notepad" and "gedit", they work good on f13. Geany on f12 worked correctly too.

Nov 2, 2009Is there a graphical front end for xrandr that also allows you to save your setup so that it automatically sets up the X configuration at boot time thereby simplifying this process. For example, at the moment if i want to use an external monitor on my laptop i have to manually set it up after booting as it defaults to the laptop resolution which is not a big deal but would still be nice to have this happen automatically. I tried putting a script into rc.local to do this but didnt work.I have tried programs such as lxrandr, grandr, arandr which are all good but dont allow you to save your choices so that they are automatically applied at the next boot of the X system.

Mar 1, 2010I just came back from a meeting with someone wo wants this functionality:When he saves a file on *his* machine, it will automatically get copied onto a server (this is on an office LAN). This is so if there's a virus attack on his machine, he will have an uninfected backup copy.
To make matters worse, the client machines will be WINDOZE. Apparently he's seen this kind of functionality at an office somewhere (he was saying something about "Microsoft" , but my brain has erased that part of the conversation ), and now wants it for himself.
I was thinking about Samba obviously, but the tricky part is doing the copying when the user *saves* a file. This will require hooks into the OS to see when a file is being saved.*If* I manage to persuade him to switch his client machines to Linux (which would be the ideal choice and make life far easier), how would it be done? I'd have to use the File Alteration MOnitor in the kernel, right?Would it be possible to write the copying code in a shell script?

Oct 24, 2010In 10.04 on a Shuttle the screen position is a few pixels off. I fix this with xvidtune for the session. I also get a new modeline. I build a new xorg.conf file (go virtual terminal, stop gdm, Xorg -configure, etc) and move it to /etc/X11. I introduce the modeline in the monitor section and reboot (I could do a service gdm stop...). Guess what, my screen is still a few pixels off. The documentation clearly states that if there is an Xorg.conf, it will be used. So what gives?
This problem has existed since the xorg.conf file was dropped. It is just plain silly that one has to engage in a geeky treasure hunt to correct a few pixels. This adjustment should be present in the System/Preferences/Montors. This is why Linux does not make it with ordinary users, making (superficially) simple things difficult.
Ubuntu :: Change GDM Greeter Position In 11.04
Jul 27, 2011I have a dual monitor setup using TwinView running an up-to-date Ubuntu 11.04 amd64. The GDM (login) greeter is displayed in the center of the screen, and thus, one half of the greeter is on the left monitor and the other half is on the right monitor. I've been trying to find away to move the greeter to only one monitor. I've searched Google and the forums for an answer.
Here's what I've tried:
1) gmdsetup => does not have an option to position the greeter
2) gconf-editor => does not have an option to position the greeter
3) ubuntu-tweak => does not have an option to position the greeter
4) Tried these settings in
/etc/gdm/custom.conf, /etc/gdm/gdm.conf,
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom, /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf:

Jul 1, 2011I'd like to improve my computer's performance by storing files' system location (e.g.: /home/user/speech.odt) and HD position (head, sector, etc) and do the computer use that info from ram memory.I have a directory with several files and when I cd and ls it, it takes a while to the computer answer me. Plus, it would return immidiate find results.
