Does anyone knows good commercial or non-commercial antivirus software that runs on ubuntu 10.04 and that works with the samba v-scan module? I was thinking about Avast, but I'm not sure it works with samba v-scan. Also I'm not sure it is possible to install the avast server edition for linux on ubuntu 10.04.

I want to take dvds that I have bought and put them on my droid phone. I have been using windows XP for this but my windows machine took a dive a few weeks ago and I am struggling getting it going and I am trying to make Linux work. On my dell laptop inspiron 6000 I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and I am loving it so far but I am jot able to get any of my commercial DVD to rip. I know that it has to do with the copyrights but is there a way for me to rip a DVD and then convert it. I have virtualbox on the system and I am not against using another OS. I have tried to install windows 98 and XP (2different disk) and I have not been able to get it. I have tried k9copy, acidrip, DVD::rip, kino and pitivi video editor and I have not been able to get any of them to work.
I have also tried several different DVDs. I am not an expert in any of these software's. I am even willing to by software if I have to. I have also tried to get my wintv pvr usb2 video capture device to work under Ubuntu but I am have tried several times over the past several years to get it work but the walkthrough I have been finding have not workedm. My system does not do what they say its supposed to or I don't understand the walkthroughs. I would be very happy if anyone could any of the above options working. I don't care which one. I would even consider paying some to log into my computer and get it setup if there is a person or company that does that with Ubuntu.

I would prefer not to do it on the TV because of possible burn in issues and would love to be able to take the mpeg files recorded on the HTPC and cut them on the laptop but haven't found a really great application to do that.

So I installed VLC Media Player and it won't play the DVD either. It presents me with a host of files, none of which it will play.I would like to stay with 10.04 if possible because I want to give this lap-top to my sister and I would like her to have an LTS distro, so she doesn't have to upgrade for a long time.My supposition is that I need to add a source for additional codecs and install them.I did search these forums (fora?) for codec, but didn't find anything appropriate. View 2 Replies View RelatedI thought I'd support Ubuntu and buy the Fluendo add-on from the app store. (I am running a fresh install of 10.10.) Whenever I put in a commercial DVD I get an "an error has occurred" message. How do I go about fixing this? I was under the impression that the ubuntu restricted extras would break fluendo, which is why I did not install them. Although during the install I did tell it to download the extra software there.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Maverick via the Update Manager, and just tried to play a commercial DVD. MPlayer won't play it, though VLC will. I had a heckuva time getting it to display with the correct aspect ratio and screen position, though.
I have all the requisites installed that I found through my research, but I couldn't find anything that seemed to relate exactly to my problem (under 10.10).
I recently installed Lubuntu 11.04 on my aunt's old computer (Sony PCV-LX800); I had it running Ubuntu for a few years but the latest releases are too much for it to bear. Anyway, a while back I installed a DVD-ROM drive in her computer in order to play DVD movies. It plays CDs and non-commercial DVDs fine, but with the commercial DVDs, it doesn't work 80% of the time. The 20% it does work, everything is fine.
I've installed all the necessary packages with every new release. Currently using the following: libdvdcss, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 (via the Medibuntu repository).Here's some info from this system while trying to play the DVD LotR: Return of the King Extended Edition:

View 5 Replies View RelatedI purchased a special collection boxed Superman set for my 10 year old daughter in May for her birthday and recently some second hand Zumba DVD's. My daughter is quite hard on DVD's. So I have as asked her to wait whilst I have them copied.
I will be using the Zumba regularly and know they will suffer so want use copies and save the originals.
I have done some reading and I think I have everything installed correctly.
I tried K9copy, but it immediately closed. I then tried K3b and noticed I needed 99GB of space. (I wonder if that is why K9copy closed?) The only thing I have that big is my backup external drive.
So I connected it up. I only had about 44 GB of space on it. I ticked for half the tracks which needed less space. So now there was enough space. I then clicked on rip DVD. It has been doing it continuously for 2 nights and is up to 24%.
So at this rate it will take a week to copy half a DVD to my drive and then I have to burn it to a DVD. This can't be right, can it?

Having issues getting my external dvd drive to play nice with 10.10. The usual horses have been beaten thoroughly.
1.) I've installed Medibuntu
2.) I've grabbed libdvdcss2, libdvdread, run the install script, etc., etc.
3.) I've attempted to check the region, with no avail.
When I try a regionset, it offers the following complaint:
ERROR: Could not open disc "(null)"! Please ensure there is a readable CD or DVD in the drive.
4.) The drive and disc(s) are all operational, as they work on different partitions and/or machines fine.
VLC/Totem will, briefly, open the menu for a given DVD. The menu video will briefly play, sputter, then die, which sounds like a region issue.
Any idea why the regionset isn't working? Perhaps it's not mounting right?
I've got a couple of commercial NAS boxes and I'm wondering if they (ReadyNas duo, DLink DNS-323) or any other NAS is suitable for having their RAIDed disks moved to a software-based NAS. To be specific, I'm a big fan of the (largely) Debian-based Ubuntu. Can the aforementioned NAS drives be migrated to Ubuntu (e.g. using the mdadm Linux command)?

1. I understand you can protect your files or directories in your website by setting file/directory permissions. The meaning of r w x is clear to me, but I'm not sure how to proceed... Starting with the index.html file, if I wanted to make it so that anyone in the world can read it but can't modify it, do I set its permissions to rwxr-xr-x? If I set it to rwxr--r--, would that mean the file couldn't be served? I mean, what does the x setting do on a .html file, how can a .html file be executable?
2. If file permissions work on the lines of owner-group-others, in the context of a website, who is 'group'? As far as I can tell, there's only the owner, which is me, and others, which is the world accessing the site. Am I correct in thinking that by default, say when creating a website on a shared hosting server, there is no group unless I specifically set one up?
3. My ISP allows the DynDNS.org service, meaning that I could serve a website from my home. It's too early to go that route just yet, but for future reference, I would like to ask about the server software called Hiawatha. Unlike the other USB devices, no name shows up.
I'd like to use this device under Skype, but the Linux version of Skype doesn't provide any way to test whether the device works or not. Windows does provide such a test (via Welcome), and the webcam works correctly there.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.

we can log into the vpn and can ssh, http, ftp in the various servers on the internal network. however when trying to view Samba/Windows shares over any windows machine, they fail to connect. BUT we can vpn in on any android device and using a samba app view the Samba & Windows shares on any server we try.
If im logged in the network internally, there does not seem to be a problem. Only if we VPN in from the outside.
a customer is running an old DOS application to run their business using windows 98/XP workstations that run the DOS app. I configured a Redhat 7.1 samba server (with fault tolerant backup server) for them back in the early 2000s & its version of Samba 2.2, I eventually made it work with all of their systems for printing & secure file sharing ("secure" for them anyway). Fast forward to 2011 & they would like to replace the aging Redhat servers with Ubuntu 10.10. So I set that up & got the following components working with the default install + patches of Ubuntu (using apt-get install samba): Windows XP: 1.) Password protected share access. 2.) Can browse Samba from Network Neighborhood.
3.) Print from XP Windows to HP network printer through Samba. 4.) Print from XP DOS terminal to HP network printer through Samba. XP is pretty much ready to go. Now, Windows 98: 1.) Password protected share access. 2.) Can browse Samba from Network Neighborhood. (this was tough!). 3.) Print from XP Windows to HP network printer through Samba. Note: CANNOT Print from Windows 98 DOS terminal to HP network printer through Samba! When I setup the LPT1 from net use on DOS to point to the Samba share, I then test by running DOS Edit, typing test, & then File->Print. It states that it can't print to LPT1 and asks to Retry, Cancel or Exit. No errors are given on the Samba side & Windows 98 doesn't seem to have an Event Viewer to tell me what's wrong. The whole thing works with Redhat 7.1 Samba though. Good old Samba 2.2. SIGH. So what I did was use my VMware Workstation & built an Ubuntu 10.10 workstation with Samba, built an XP workstation & Windows 98 vm image. I didn't have network printing, so I setup CUPS-PDF to print to PDF files in Samba. As with the "production" installs of their business, I got everything working just fine except DOS LPT1 on Windows 98. So I can get the same error in a test environment basically & it's still puzzling....
