I was thinking about Avast, but I'm not sure it works with samba v-scan. Also I'm not sure it is possible to install the avast server edition for linux on ubuntu 10.04.

I would have thought that accessing a VARIABLE was way faster than reading a FILE on the file system... Why this result ?Is there a way to optimize the perfCat.zsh script by reducing the number of accesses to the file system ?

Software :: Ubuntu 10.04 Rip Commercial DVDs
Jun 17, 2010I want to take dvds that I have bought and put them on my droid phone. I have been using windows XP for this but my windows machine took a dive a few weeks ago and I am struggling getting it going and I am trying to make Linux work. On my dell laptop inspiron 6000 I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and I am loving it so far but I am jot able to get any of my commercial DVD to rip. I know that it has to do with the copyrights but is there a way for me to rip a DVD and then convert it. I have virtualbox on the system and I am not against using another OS. I have tried to install windows 98 and XP (2different disk) and I have not been able to get it. I have tried k9copy, acidrip, DVD::rip, kino and pitivi video editor and I have not been able to get any of them to work.
I have also tried several different DVDs. I am not an expert in any of these software's. I am even willing to by software if I have to. I have also tried to get my wintv pvr usb2 video capture device to work under Ubuntu but I am have tried several times over the past several years to get it work but the walkthrough I have been finding have not workedm. My system does not do what they say its supposed to or I don't understand the walkthroughs. I would be very happy if anyone could any of the above options working. I don't care which one. I would even consider paying some to log into my computer and get it setup if there is a person or company that does that with Ubuntu.

Sep 13, 2010I'm just looking for a good mpeg cutter for my Ubuntu laptop. I currently use video redo on my Windows PC but that is also my HTPC and is hooked up to the TV. I would prefer not to do it on the TV because of possible burn in issues and would love to be able to take the mpeg files recorded on the HTPC and cut them on the laptop but haven't found a really great application to do that.

So I installed VLC Media Player and it won't play the DVD either. It presents me with a host of files, none of which it will play.I would like to stay with 10.04 if possible because I want to give this lap-top to my sister and I would like her to have an LTS distro, so she doesn't have to upgrade for a long time.My supposition is that I need to add a source for additional codecs and install them.I did search these forums (fora?) for codec, but didn't find anything appropriate. Nov 7, 2010I thought I'd support Ubuntu and buy the Fluendo add-on from the app store. (I am running a fresh install of 10.10.) Whenever I put in a commercial DVD I get an "an error has occurred" message. How do I go about fixing this? I was under the impression that the ubuntu restricted extras would break fluendo, which is why I did not install them. Although during the install I did tell it to download the extra software there.

Apr 12, 2011I recently upgraded to Maverick via the Update Manager, and just tried to play a commercial DVD. MPlayer won't play it, though VLC will. I had a heckuva time getting it to display with the correct aspect ratio and screen position, though.
I have all the requisites installed that I found through my research, but I couldn't find anything that seemed to relate exactly to my problem (under 10.10).

Jun 4, 2011I recently installed Lubuntu 11.04 on my aunt's old computer (Sony PCV-LX800); I had it running Ubuntu for a few years but the latest releases are too much for it to bear. Anyway, a while back I installed a DVD-ROM drive in her computer in order to play DVD movies. It plays CDs and non-commercial DVDs fine, but with the commercial DVDs, it doesn't work 80% of the time. The 20% it does work, everything is fine.
I've installed all the necessary packages with every new release. Currently using the following: libdvdcss, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 (via the Medibuntu repository).Here's some info from this system while trying to play the DVD LotR: Return of the King Extended Edition:

Software :: K3b - Copying Commercial DVD - Taking A Long Time
Jul 24, 2011I purchased a special collection boxed Superman set for my 10 year old daughter in May for her birthday and recently some second hand Zumba DVD's. My daughter is quite hard on DVD's. So I have as asked her to wait whilst I have them copied.
I will be using the Zumba regularly and know they will suffer so want use copies and save the originals.
I have done some reading and I think I have everything installed correctly.
I tried K9copy, but it immediately closed. I then tried K3b and noticed I needed 99GB of space. (I wonder if that is why K9copy closed?) The only thing I have that big is my backup external drive.
So I connected it up. I only had about 44 GB of space on it. I ticked for half the tracks which needed less space. So now there was enough space. I then clicked on rip DVD. It has been doing it continuously for 2 nights and is up to 24%.
So at this rate it will take a week to copy half a DVD to my drive and then I have to burn it to a DVD. This can't be right, can it?

Fedora :: MAYDAY Accidentally Messed Up Fedora Core 12 Partition - Error Reading The Disk
Jan 18, 2010I did a horrible mistake due to lapse in my concentration. Here is the 80 GB IDE disk geometry:
=> C: Windows XP SP2 15 GB partition
=> D: NTFS parition - 10 GB
=> E:F:G:H: NTFS partitions on the Windows Extended partition.
=> On the same Extended partition, there exists Linux /swap and /root partitions.
What happened was:
a) I wanted to delete the H: parition which was residing adjacent to Linux partition
b) By mistake I opened the Explorer and clicked the Mouse on H: partition and left it like that (forgot)
c) I opened Add/Remove program list but did nothing, to do few uninstalls after partition deletion.
d) Now I opened compmgmt.msc for Disk Management then deleted the H: partition!
Then XP reacted strangely and got almost hung
e) Then I switched OFF and ON the PC.
f) Most shocking was GRUB screen vanished (crash console appears) which means that Linux partition got deleted instead of H: partition!!
It's important to share with you that Fedora Core 12 possess the default BOOT flag. I thought that it's nothing big deal, only a case of Boot flag toggle with DOS bootable CD but am shell shocked to find after hitting the fdisk from DOS it says Error reading the disk!!! I felt like collapsed for a while, don't know how I did such a mistake. how to boot into my Windows XP. I can't afford to loose data or bear the expense on Data recovery

To be specific, I'm a big fan of the (largely) Debian-based Ubuntu. Can the aforementioned NAS drives be migrated to Ubuntu (e.g. using the mdadm Linux command)?
Secondly, is there any commercial NAS that can be migrated over? Incidentally, here is a link to somebody who succeeded in a migration:URL...My specific scenario I'd like to prepare for, is the eventual (sudden) death of one of the NAS motherboards.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Playback Commercial DVDs On External DVD (Wrong Region/mounting ?
Jan 19, 2011Having issues getting my external dvd drive to play nice with 10.10. The usual horses have been beaten thoroughly.
1.) I've installed Medibuntu
2.) I've grabbed libdvdcss2, libdvdread, run the install script, etc., etc.
3.) I've attempted to check the region, with no avail.
When I try a regionset, it offers the following complaint:
ERROR: Could not open disc "(null)"! Please ensure there is a readable CD or DVD in the drive.
4.) The drive and disc(s) are all operational, as they work on different partitions and/or machines fine.
VLC/Totem will, briefly, open the menu for a given DVD. The menu video will briefly play, sputter, then die, which sounds like a region issue.
Any idea why the regionset isn't working? Perhaps it's not mounting right?

Jun 3, 2011Unfortunately, I find that Fedora 15 may have been released a bit too soon, due to it's lack of freedom. Examples: desktop customization yes. I used gnome-tweak-tool and yes I like gnome 3, but I much prefer gnome 2 + compiz,emerald for it's much more pleasant to the eye. Gnome 3 should have been an option, not forced on to the community! Other reason, desktop recording, the original recordmydesktop via command line has a much higher quality than the gnome 3 which is not even worth bothering since the gnome 3 freezes afterwards leaving a poor video playback that resembles an early 2000's .gif image! Another thing is it does not read my mp3 player while fedora 12-14 had absolute no issues! I will be returning to fedora14 until gnome 3 is fully established and meets the requirements of it's loyal customers!!

Jun 22, 2009I just downloaded the Fedora11 LiveCD and booted it......it boots, but when it starts to load KDE, it takes a very long time, and it never ends. It just keeps on reading from the CD-ROM drive. I can see the GUI is loading, but the loading time is so long that the mouse sometimes freezes. My Config is 512MB of RAM and 2 IDE Hard Disks. Also note that I verified the image with SHA256, and even burnt the CD at two different speeds, one at 48X and the other at 16X. Still nothing. There has also been severe kernel panics on EXT4.

Fedora Hardware :: Reading Old SCSI SCO Unix Drive?
May 17, 2011I need to read some data from a hdd that belongs to an old SCO Unix system. The SCSI card is PCI so I unplugged it from the old SCO unix box and stuck it in a new computer and booted using a Fedora 14 USB pen drive. The SCSI card was recognized and so was the hdd but it was not mounted. I then went into Applications, Disk Utility, and found the hdd. Under 'Edit Partition' the type was blank. I was tempted to set it to 'Extended' but was not sure whether that could damage the data on the disk. Does anyone know whether I would be able to read this Hdd by setting the type to 'Extended'?

Mar 28, 2010Recently changed my motherboard. The new board has the 790FX/SB750 chipset, and the old board used the 770/SB600 chipset. Prior to the change, I had never had any problems reading/writing CDs or DVDs. I now find that reading a data CD is very slow, it can take up to 30 secs before the icon appears on the desktop and a filer window appears. In my tests thus far, only data CDs written on Linux can always be read, albeit slowly. Data CDs written on Windows are variable. Some are never seen by the system, others may or may not be opened. That is I might be able to read it during one test, and next time I try I can't.
When a CD is not 'seen', there is an initial flurry of activity by the drive, but the drive icon (in "Computer' window) doesn't think a disc is in the drive. I can boot OK off a DVD, and data DVDs wrtten on Linux are opened and read quite fast. I am running Fedora 12 x86_64 with the latest Fedora kernel package (2.6.32.9-70), and the Motherboard bios is the latest available. The CD/DVD drive is a SATA Pioneer DVR-215. I have checked the bios settings, and have tried setting 'storage configuration' to IDE and to AHCI, each giving the same result.
I tried switching the SATA data cable from SATA-3 to SATA-2 and was able to open and read a Windows data CD that had previously not been seen, but subsequent attempts have failed to open and read that CD. I suspect the problem may have something to do with hardware drivers, but I really am guessing about this and have not been able to find any useful information on this.
