Server :: "free" Shows Far More Memory Usage Than Summing Up Application Usage?

Aug 6, 2010

I've come across a really strange issue with one of my RHEL servers. The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":

Code:

[root@server1 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 12011 7946 4065 0 4 23
-/+ buffers/cache: 7919 4092

General :: Big Cpu Usage But Top Shows No Heavy Use Process

May 6, 2011

I have been running to a strange problem. For a few days, a few times a day something seems to take over my machine. Suddenly I can't type, or the key shows up about 5 seconds are being pressed, music players halt, etc. In anticipation, I had top and htop running. Sure enough, when this business begins htop reports all 8 cores firing at near 100% for a few minutes. However, top is telling me nothing about who is too blame. The cup%sy on top shows heavy usage, but the top processes are nothing remarkable, mostly just top and htop and conky, all running at around 1 or 2% on average. I am a bit puzzled as to why I can't see the cpu hog so that I figure out what is going on. My question then: Are there some processes (in kernel space?) that don't show up in top, yet which could be hogging the cpu?

OpenSUSE Install :: Hidden Files - DF Shows More Disk Usage Than DU

Oct 23, 2010

I am running an Opensuse 11.2 system as a backup file server. Several external hard drives are attached via USB and mounted during boot via the fstab file. Recently, I noticed the df command showed the root partition being >65% full, while the du command showed the same drive was only about 20% full. After much investigation, I discovered that some large directories had been created under the /media folder on the root partition that were hidden when the external drives were mounted as directories with the same names under /media. I could only see this when I rebooted with a live CD and mounted the suspect partition without the external drives mounted. Is there a way to examine whether a mounted partition has existing files "hidden" when a separate file system is mounted "on top of it"?

Debian :: NetworkManager Applet Shows No Network While Connected - Wired Network Device Not Managed

Oct 30, 2010

I'm running Squeeze and I'm looking 3 days now for a solution in some weird problem. The NetworkManager Applet shows that there isn't connection although I am connected. The icon has this small "x" and when mouseover it says "No network conncection". Moreover when left clicking it, it says

"Wired Network Device not managed"

While I was looking for the solution a came across this post by an Ubuntu developer who says:network-manager-applet displays the connectivity state of network-manager's managed interfaces not every interface. So the title "network manager says disconnected but is connected and working" is actually misleading. The interface is connected and working but not from network-manager's point of view since it is not managing the interface. Additionally, in Lucid now network-manager applet displays nothing now for non-managed interfaces so is less misleading. You can check to see whether or not an interface is managed by network-manager by using the command line too nm-tool. You'll see "State: unmanaged" for unmanaged interfaces.

In Red Hat, suppose if root user wishes to give a privilege to run the fdisk command to a user named sam.And he makes appropriate configuration changes in /etc/sudoers file. Now when sam wishes to run the fdisk command, then he has to issue:

Code:
[sam@system43~]$sudo /sbin/fdisk -l
Password: But in ubuntu, after the same configuration being done, what sam needs to do is:
Code:
[sam@somesystem43~]$sudo fdisk -l

That means, in ubuntu the user need not type the full path of the command. I wish to know how can I make red hat system work like ubuntu as far as the sudo usage is concerned.

Ubuntu :: Terminal Command To List Disk Usage In Order?

Mar 29, 2010

I regularly use 'df -h' to check usage on each of my primary directories and mount points.

I'm currently somewhat confused by disk usage within my filesystem, so I'd like to do the following:

Display directory size of all, or say, the 10 largest, subdirectories to a specified directory. So, if I passed the root (/) directory, output would list the subdirectory of / with the largest disk usage first and its associated disk usage listed in human readable format (either M or G suffix as appropriate), followed by the subdirectory and usage for the second largest directory and so on.

Can anyone suggest a command or series of commands to do this?

'somePrefix_blablablablabla.ext' --> '0_blablablablabla.ext'

I DON'T want an incrementation, just the leading prefix '0_'
