i can click on place and system and anything else but when i try to open application by just clicking on it i get froze for a minute and i can not open it i got ubuntu 10.4
View 1 RepliesI received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.
Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?
I was looking for a command to log off the user who froze the screen. I logged in as a new user but I got some errors now all I see is the color screen, how can I log the new user off (the GUI)? I did the above command but nothing came in return?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook, on which I installed the netbook remix. It had ran fine until one day, I shut it down while it was updating. Now, on bootup, it will take me to the login screen and then basically freezes. The keyboard and mouse do not work and I cannot login to any profile. I tried a clean reinstall, but it only finds the preferences I have and sends me right back to the login screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLast week I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 to a 8.10. While my ever so loyal machine was performing this business, I started my diner, once in a while having a quick look at how things were going. And they were going fine. The last thing I noticed on the screen was that upgrading was at about 3 minutes from finishing, and when I got back to my PC I was confronted with a black screen. Later on I found out that the reason for the crash was a malfunctioning USB-hub in which my mouse was located.
Anyway, I couldn't get my Ubuntu running, the only thing I got to do was reach the log-in screen, enter my username and password, after which the screen froze. Typing CTRL+ALT+F1 gave me a terminal window, but I had no clue what to go looking for or where/how I could find it.
In the mean time I re-partitioned the HD (75GB), placed the old Ubuntu on a 30GB partition and gave the other 45GB to a new partition on which I re-installed my Ubuntu 8.04. Working from that partition I was able to find out that the old version had indeed upgraded to 8.10 but was missing the <gnome-power-manager> file.
My question now: If I can in any way restore that missing file or point me out some kind of tutorial where I can learn how to do it?
Untill now I have been looking through about a few hundred tutorials, but most of them are written by people who know the terminal inside-out, and frankly are not really easily understandable for newbies.
The fact is: in that old version I have many maps and files which I would like to save (yes, you are completely right: I should have saved them in the first place!) but some of them are for some reason write-protected and I do not know how to get root-priviliges to un-lock them.
Every time I try to install something, be it by the terminal, synaptic, or ubuntu software center, I get this error.

In recent versions of KDE4, I have been able to assign the application menu to the right mouse button. In 4.6, the only thing that appears is Desktop Settings. Does anyone know when the fix for this will be included in KDE 4.6 updates? And, is it possible to move to a previous version of KDE in 11.4?

I try to configure mouse click interval since a single click is recognized as double click by doing it from KDE mouse configuration in system settings; but my attempt doesn't work even (I set the click interval to 2 sec, but doesn't change anything). What is the best way to do this in slackware?

Fine, screw 'em, I'll switch to something else. So I hunt around for the options, most of which suck. Then I discover Choqok is already installed on my machine (11.4). Except the POS doesn't work.
To use it, I have to authenticate with my Twitter account. So I click Add, select Twitter, it pops up the dialog. I leave the alias as Twitter, click the authenticate with Twitter button. The Firefox icon pops up and bounces around - but Firefox is already running. So nothing happens! No Twitter access, no page loaded, nothing. I shut down Firefox, try it again. Same deal. As usual, no one bothered to test this POS software before releasing it. how to get this **** to authenticate to Twitter in the absence of ANY useful documentation for this junk?

Is there anyway to disable the tap-click on the touchpad of a laptop while on the login screen? I do not want to disable the click from the button, but rather when you gently tap it with your finger. The options for it in the Control Center doesn't seem to disable it during the login screen.

That's still gone. I also am having problems with my hibernate. Whether I close my lid or physically click to hibernate, all that happens is my screen goes black but doesn't shut off all the way and the power button does nothing.

Could this be a Hardware thingy? The reason I ask is because I've had this issue happening with 5.2 on the same machine. I just formatted it completely and installed a fresh 5.3 i386 on it and I get the same behavior.

I'm newish to the forum, but have been using ubuntu for the past few months.I recently upgraded from eeebuntu (a 9.04 derivative) to 10.04, and found that two finger tapping my touchpad has gone from middle click to right click, (and 3 fingers is now middle instead of right).
From what I've seen, this has been changed since 9.10, but I haven't been able to find a permanent solution yet. Most fixes have been from before and use hal, or other things that don't exist anymore. The one thing I've found does work is using xinput and the command

But that has to be run every time I start up, and it occasionally reverts while I'm using the computer. I've tried making a script that runs at startup, but neither adding it to the list of startup programs, or autostart folder has worked, but running the script file manually does work. I'm a bit at wits end with this, it's the only issue I've had with 10.04, and I've spent many many hours trying to get it to work (I've also tried gsynaptics and the newer version whose name escapes me right now). Hopefully there's a permanent fix out there.
About a week ago I installed some updates. What they were I don't remember. After I did that my mouse started acting up. Now about half the time when I single click it registers as a double click. Also when I click and drag to select text anywhere it'll randomly do another click screwing up that process.
So far I think the problem is when I press the left mouse button it registers the left click and then when I release, it randomly registers another left click.
The mouse itself works fine if I take it to another PC that's using windows.
OS: Ubuntu 9.10 64bit
Mouse: Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0
mouse menu different in 10.10, is there a way to make the mouse single click instead of double click?

It is basically a Ubuntu (or variant) computer with the output going to a TV and home theater system.I would like to know if there is any way to deal with a frozen full screen application with Ubuntu? Occasionally the media center software freezes, Ubuntu seems to still be running fine but I am unable to get control back from the frozen app, and have to kill it with the power button.

View 5 Replies View RelatedHave had 9.10 running for a while with no problems. Not long ago upgraded 1GB RAM to 2GB so I could run VirtualBox better. All worked fine until a few days ago, I ran the normal system update. Since then, all application windows just disappear off screen after a random? period of time.
I.e. I tried to check Software center and the window closed after getting to 5% download. Just tried the System download manager which got about 8 files into an update before logging off desktop and taking me to log in screen. I just tried Firefox and the toolbar icon was displayed while it was attempting to load, but then that disappeared.
I used to have a feature that when you had more than one application on screen, and clicked one behind the active app, the active one would then fold back behind the new application. Like the active app would place itself behind the new app in the same way you would bring a card forward in front of another if you were playing cards. I hope that makes sense.. Anywho, I lost that setting and can't seem to find it again. And is it possible to have a plasma screen in gnome, if so, how?

View 3 Replies View Relatedwhen i click my mouse on something, it sometimes registers as two clicks. it doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to be annoying. for example, when i click a videos video to pause it, it often opens into fullscreen (which you normally click twice to do). also, in the url bar of chromium, i can't select the entire url by clicking. i now need to use ctrl+a. that's also because when i try to select the url, the highlight randomly disappears.
if i have multiple windows open, my click on the first "x" of the top-most window also closes the next window. i'm on linux mint 10. it's not really important, but it drives me crazy sometimes when my mouse doesn't work the way i want it to.

If I normally click the Trash icon either in Kmail or in Evolution more than one mail gets deleted in a sequential order! I have to press the click button extremely light to avoid this problem. I have confirmed this problem is not only with the Email clients but even with most other normal applications too. I have changed my mouse twice but the problem persists. Both were USB mice.
