when I set images as desktop backgrounds, Firefox or Nautilus saves them in my home folder. Does anyone know how to change this to ~/pictures/backgrounds?

View 4 Replies View Relatedrecently I have been trying to create the perfect custom ubuntu .iso to write to a usb drive so i could carry around a live cd version of my current desktop operating system. I have 2 problems...
1: using various tools like Remastersys, Ubuntu Customization Kit, and Ubuntu's own LiveCDCustomization tutorial I have managed to install most of the packages that I want.... Truecrypt is not in the repos and i would very much like it on my custom live cd. while in chroot i tried using wget to download it then extract and install it, but i got a 404 error so it did not seem to be connecting to the place to download it. is there a workaround to getting truecrypt to install into my extracted squashfs? would it be possible to download the packages to my desktop then copy them over to my chroot squashfs to be installed?
2: I have not been able to customize the default appearance of the desktop environment like the background, icons,colors, window border, panels, applets, and so on.... Ubuntu's tutorial states that I need to edit .xmls in /etc/gconf but i do not understand how to edit those to get what I want. LiveCD creates a new user with default settings everytime it is started so its a matter of editing the files that control the settings of a new user.
Today I installed Xubuntu desktop on my normal Ubuntu, to see what it's like, and to have the option to run a more minimal desktop when I want.
My only problem is that my login screen loads with the Xubuntu theme. This wouldn't be a problem except it makes it take significantly longer to boot into Ubuntu (Gnome).
How can I change it back so that Gnome is the default, and XFCE only gets loaded if I pick it at login?
what are my options with customizing Gnome at the login screen?

This is an OLD computer, so I'm trying to lean up the normal software running as much as possible. I have the computer logging in as guest if no one logs in within 30 secs. Right now, it logs into gnome for everyone. Btw, I'm running FC8 on this computer. It is running gdm. I would like it to have it use something lighter like twm when logged in as guest. But I still want a full gnome session when anyone else logs in.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just updated to 11.04, and noticed in the "Background" tab of the appearance app, that there was what looked like a default option to cycle a set of backgrounds. However, when I selected it, the only background that appeared was the first one in the series, and it never cycled.
1) Is cycling backgrounds possible?
2) If so, can I create my own series of them?
I understand the pictures are in usr/share/backgrounds. When you select a picture from the internet to be your desktop background (as I have) where does the physical picture go? It does not go into usr/share/backgrounds - where is it?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a 2008 2.2ghz white macbook and outputting to a 27" LG monitor through the mini-dvi output. This issue occurred when I was running 10.04 as well.

Any time things appear to be going better, you have overlooked something.
Difficult to describe, but basically the desktop background image has a slightly smaller copy of itself (roughly 70% of the original) overlayed in the upper-left hand corner, like a picture-in-picture type of effect. This occurs on both the login screen,d the wallpaper I have set under my account. It seems to be isolated to ONLY the wallpaper, and not affecting any icons or functionality of anything else that I've noticed. Logging out and rebooting have no effect on the issue.

But when i hit play nothing happens the name of the song flickers but nothing happens... what do i do now? I tried uninstalling banchee and installing it again but had the same results.is there a way to set multiple desktop backgrounds on gnome?

I switched our main fileserver to new hardware running RHEL 4 Update 8 yesterday. Post the switch my users are finding that the text in the boxes on taskbars at the bottom of their desktop screens no longer truncates but spills over onto that of other boxes, making them extremely hard to decipher.
All our desktops are RHEL 4.8 too. Also, I'm only able to select PNGs as desktop wallpaper - JPEG backgrounds just appear as plain white when selected(!) Has anyone seen this before and knows of a fix?

while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.

I've 3 hosts images installed in virtualbox, that every time I reboot an image, the ip address change.
The 3 images are ubuntu.
I would like to configure these images in a way that, every time I reboot the images, I can access them by the name, and not by the ip.
I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.
And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.
Until a few days ago [updates perhaps?] I was able to right click on images to save as desktop backgrounds and now suddenly that option is no longer in my right click menu on any image anywhere including my own.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI tried to place a mono icon in usr/icons/etc but I didn't have the permission to do so. I tried to change my user profile to Admin, thinking I could go back to custom, but that hasn't and it isn't allowing me to go back to my previous setting.
Within minutes of being an Admin user I noticed I couldn't even unmount something. I really need to figure out how to change my profile back to default.
After that has been dealt with, I would like some guidance on how to gain root access to put my icon where it needs to be.
im looking to allow virtualbox raw disk access to /dev/sdb
currently if i
ls -l /dev/sdb
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8,2010-01-04 17:00 /dev/sdb
now if i chmod this to 777 or use chown to change the owner this temporarily works but after a few moments it defaults back to its original permissions.
is there a way i can define the permission? i was thinking fstab but i can't have a mount point?
I am using Xampp on ubuntu 10.04 and I have set my document root to a folder in my home directory for ease of use with netbeans. There are several times where I have to manually go and change the permission to 755. If you just place a file in the directory it does not default to 755, seems odd since the document root folder is in my home directory. Chmod works fine but I was wondering is their a way to make all files or folders added to my document root to default to 755?
