Fedora Networking :: When Try To Mount The Share To A Different Directory On The Server, Receive A 'no Such Directory' Error?

Dec 18, 2010

I have a server with Fedora 13 with which I would like to get NFS working. I have looked up multiple howto's and tutorials, but I'm having a problem not addressed by any of them.Official how-to, another how-to, and another how-to.I have verified that nfs-utils, nfs-utils-lib, portmap, and system-config-nfs are installed and running. I have verified that I have, in fact, shared the directory that I want to share, and that the proper permissions are set.

I had to go through some gyrations to get the Belkin wireless N router to allow my server to have a static IP. However, I can ping the server from the nfs client (a toshiba satellite running mint 8), and vice versa. I have (for now) disabled firewalls on both computers. I think I have disabled SELinux on Fedora 13 (for now). When I attempt to connect to the server from the client, the output looks like this:Quote:

aragorn ~ # mount -v 192.168.2.101:/test /home/kelev/test/
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Sat Dec 18 12:21:09 2010

Ubuntu :: Share Windows 7 Folders With Lucid 10.04

Also I can't remember how to change the Ubuntu network settings from default 'Workgroup' to my own group name.

Ubuntu :: Share A Scanner On Network In Lucid System?

Jun 27, 2010

Assumptions:

Your scanner is installed properly and fully function. If you need to install your scanner first, have a look at the ScanningHowTo. To check if your scanner is connected and installed properly you can use the command "scanimage -L".
The machine we're configuring to use as the scanner server has the ip address 192.168.1.1 and subnet-mask 255.255.255.0. This means that this machine is on the 192.168.1.0/24 (CIDR notation) network/subnet. code...

Ubuntu :: Share A Home Partition Between Lucid Windows 7

Jul 8, 2010

I was going to freshly format my laptop with Windows 7 x86_64 and Lucid Lynx x86_x64... I have a HUGE amount of media (music, videos, pictures, documents) and I don't keep all of it on my external harddrive.

The plan is to have the basic 2 partitions for Windows 7 and Ubuntu but I would like to have a 3rd partition that is just for media that I could share between the two OSes. I guess I would create symbolic links in the Ubuntu Home folder to point to the partition with media and in Windows I could probably just add those folders to libraries (unless someone knows how to move the User folder to another parition?)

What should I format this new partition as? NTFS? It needs to support files larger than 4GB and Windows can't read/write to basically anything.

Ubuntu Networking :: File Corruption By Copy From Lucid To CIFS Share

Aug 11, 2010

There are a number of shares on the destination system; for the purposes of this thread I used D$ and F$ (corresponding to those partitions). These shares are mounted permanently via CIFS (entries in fstab) on the source system.Today I copied an ISO image of some 3.5 GB from source (S) to destination (D). md5sum on S gave a different checksum for the source ISO than that calculated by HashCheck Shell Extension for the destination ISO. I know some would argue that I shoud use the same md5sum programm for both images.

To circumvent that I 7zipped the ISO, verified it's integrity and copied that archive from S to D. Verification of the acrchive by the Win version of 7z failed. To see if it's a protocol problem I copied both ISO and archive of ISO to another D this time using sshfs (it's an Ubuntu server). Flawless copies. Then I copied both files to another Win-based server on the same network. Flawless copies.Mystified, I checked the partition's file system integrity (NTFS) where the errors occured. Minor inconsistencies (no errors according to chkdsk). So I copied both files again, once to another partition (D:) of the original D, once to that partition causing the error in the first place (F:).

(D:): archive corrupt, checksum okay
(F:): this time around both okay.

What the hell can I do to nail down the problem?! I don't even know whether it's a problem of the source system or the destination.

Ubuntu :: Share Home Directory With 2 Distros?

Jun 14, 2010

I'm not sure if this is the proper section of the forum for this, but I haven't really seen anything about this particular topic. I've got Ubuntu 10.04 installed as my main OS. It's on a 25GB partition, and I have a 175GB partition that I use as my /home directory.

On the second hard disk I have a 15GB partition that I would like to install, and try out, Slackware 13.1.
Is it a bad idea to try to also use that 175GB /home partition for Slackware and Ubuntu at the same time? Can that cause incompatibility problems for me, with any shared software between the two distros, or is this something that should work ok?

Software :: Can't Share A Directory In Nfs?

Oct 6, 2010

I would like to share a directory between 2 PC's, so I thought to install NFS. But the solution is not so straight and I've got the following problem (the PC's use linux):1 - On the server, I'm not the administrator of the machine,t the NFS server is already installed. I don't know how to export a directory placed in my USER directory without editing the /etc/export file. How can I export my directory?2 - On the client, I've root privileges and I installed the nfs client with the command "apt-get install nfs-common portmap", but when I execute the command showmount I've the error:

showmount -e SERVER_IPclnt_create: RPC: Program not registeredMaybe this problem is related to question 1, but I think that this error message is not so clear to understand what's happening. How can I get more detailed information about the error message? Also, does anyone know what's happening?3 - Since I don't have root privileges on the server to export my directory, and if there's no other way around to solve question 1, should I use other form of sharing a directory between PC's?

Ubuntu Servers :: Sync Directory To Remote Nfs Share?

Jul 21, 2011

I have a folder on my workstation and I currently have an identical copy on my nas mounted via ifs (I'll be using this as my backup). The folder contains many virtual machines that are usually powered off. I like to think of the copy on my nas as a backup. The benefit of having two copies of my vms is that if I boot up too many on my workstation and the drive starts to cause a bottle neck I can simply boot the vms from the nas instead. (gigabit ethernet)

I would like changes I make to my local copy to be reflected on the nas.

I want this to happen In the background, I.e. If I turn off my machine it shouldnt cause a problem, the next time I boot up it just re checks the files and continues syncing the 2 directories.

What is the best tool for the job? Rsync?

I've never really used it before so a few pointers to get me going would be great, or obviously other recommendations if there are any.

Ubuntu Security :: Trojan Virus Keeps Coming In Share Directory?

Sep 27, 2010

After some time i always see a trojan virus in my ubuntu machines shared folder. It is an exe detected by ClamAv as Trojan.Autokit-77 I thought i was getting it from some windows machine on the network but that isn't the case. I deleted the virus and removed my computer from the network and still the virus comes back. My computer however, is still connected to the internet through an independent mobile broadband usb stick.

So where is the virus coming from and why is it going to my shared folder. I thought ubuntu would not allow the virus to do something like this without me giving it permission. I am running 10.4.

Ubuntu Networking :: Active Directory Samba Share Permission?

Feb 24, 2011

I'm having a problem with Active Directory and Share permissions that I cant seem to figure out. I used likewise-open to join my ubuntu server to a windows 2008 domain. Everything seems to be working fine. The problem is, the only way I can access the shares is if I CHMOD 777 the share directory. If I CHMOD 770, the Domain owner or Domain group member of the directory cant access the directory. Also, when creating a folder within the share, I need to set the directory mask as 777 in order to enter those sub folders.

Heres the share section from my smb.conf

Code:
[public]
comment = Ubuntu File Server Share
path = /srv/samba/public
browseable = yes

Software :: Download Some Images From A Website - Single Column Of Links To The Images?

Jul 26, 2010

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).

Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.

My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

Server :: Group Share Directory Permissions

Jul 8, 2010

On our fileserver, we primary use samba to share files to our users, but a few users have to use ssh/sftp to access the file server. In samba we have the shares setup so that permissions are forced to be the correct group owner and group read/write. The problem is those few who access via ssh/sftp. There files do not have the correct permissions. These people are not the most computer savvy, I'm dealing with biologist here. Is there some way to fix this or will I just have to setup a cron job to go through and set permissions periodically?
