I have read that it is possible to give different backgrounds to different desktops in KDE 4.3, but I have yet to find how to do it. Is it really possible and if so, how do I do it?

Difficult to describe, but basically the desktop background image has a slightly smaller copy of itself (roughly 70% of the original) overlayed in the upper-left hand corner, like a picture-in-picture type of effect. This occurs on both the login screen,d the wallpaper I have set under my account. It seems to be isolated to ONLY the wallpaper, and not affecting any icons or functionality of anything else that I've noticed. Logging out and rebooting have no effect on the issue.

I've installed 11.2 on a DELL Lattitude D610 lpatop.
Works - almost - perfectly.
A question: how can I change the background for an individual desktop ?
I've been Googl'ing it, but get different options for difference sub-versions.
Any time things appear to be going better, you have overlooked something.

With the installation of 11.4, my video driver changed over to the nouveau driver from the proprietary nVidia driver. Now I get a grid of vertical lines following my curser in both KDE and Gnome, a similar grid over icons and as background fill in KDE. In KDE the grid lines appear over icons within application windows. Is anyone else seeing these? Or, not seeing them while using the nVidia driver?
OS: openSuse 11.4
CPU: AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz (Socket A)
GPU: nVidia Geforce 7300 GT

i just installed opensuse 11.3 (after being on Mint for couple of years) and really impressed with stability compared to latest Mint 9/Ubuntu10.04.the only issue I have now is I can't turn on desktop effects neither in KDE nor in Gnome.In gnome i can't change compiz seetings at all - the windows freezes after i try to click on 'Enable desktop effects', and that's it. It worked fairly well in ubuntu though.

This is the second new install of 10.4 on the same machine with the same issue. After boot, as soon as user logs into the desktop, sys mon shows cpu at 100 percent and a steady climb in ram usage. several processes are spawned continuously until all ram is consumed and then moves on to use scratch space.
Using top, the process count moves into over a thousand total processes. Some investigation using top, ps, and digging into the /proc folder shows a ppid of 1 If the machine is booted to shell, top shows 120 processes and is stable. Some of the processes running repetitively are the gnome toolbar, nautilus, and I wish I was clear headed enough to write the others down before I left work. I can certainly get a more complete list in the morning.
I have swapped out ram, and the processor with no success. I have also tried apt-get purge ubuntu-desktop then installing with apt, this did not resolve it. As mentioned at the top of the post, this is the second install with these symptoms. The first install started showing the issue about 10 hours after first boot. On this second install, all was working fine for a couple days before this started in.

I just updated to 11.04, and noticed in the "Background" tab of the appearance app, that there was what looked like a default option to cycle a set of backgrounds. However, when I selected it, the only background that appeared was the first one in the series, and it never cycled.
1) Is cycling backgrounds possible?
2) If so, can I create my own series of them?

Running gnome under Ubuntu Lucid
$ env | grep TERM
TERM=xterm
COLORTERM=gnome-terminal
I had to edit both my .muttrc and my vim colorscheme to change the background color from black to none in order to get a proper black background (or, more accurately, to retain the terminal's default black background). Setting it to black resulted in a dark grey background. This only happens with gnome-terminal; konsole, xterm and rxvt are fine.

I understand the pictures are in usr/share/backgrounds. When you select a picture from the internet to be your desktop background (as I have) where does the physical picture go? It does not go into usr/share/backgrounds - where is it?

I have been having issues with my desktop background pictures overlapping.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a 2008 2.2ghz white macbook and outputting to a 27" LG monitor through the mini-dvi output. This issue occurred when I was running 10.04 as well.
I've tried editing xrandr:
Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 286mm x 179mm
1280x800 59.9 +
1024x768 60.0*

I switched our main fileserver to new hardware running RHEL 4 Update 8 yesterday. Post the switch my users are finding that the text in the boxes on taskbars at the bottom of their desktop screens no longer truncates but spills over onto that of other boxes, making them extremely hard to decipher.
All our desktops are RHEL 4.8 too. Also, I'm only able to select PNGs as desktop wallpaper - JPEG backgrounds just appear as plain white when selected(!) Has anyone seen this before and knows of a fix?

Running Jessie (with a low-pinned Debian-based repositories added to my sources.list (e.g. Kali, kxstudio) for those packages not currently available on Debian (like the Kali menu of security tools). Running on a HP 15-r189nd (Energy Star) laptop.
First question: How do I get GDM3 to add root as an option during login? I can type the root user name in. I don't need it to show the root user in the user list (would actually prefer to need to type it in), but I do want to be able to start an X session as root, since some of the Kali tools (e.g. nmap) needs root to function fully. If I type in root and try to start, it just takes me back to the GDM3 login.
Second question: When I want to select my Desktop Enviroment/Window Manager in GDM3, the list appears below the little gear so I can only see half of the list (xfce not visible to select). How do I change the GDM3 appearance/settings that will change the position of the DE list?
Third question: How do I get multiple X sessions running simultaneously? What I have been able to do, while logged in as myuser and running X on tty7, is to log into a tty[1-6] as root, and then startx -- :1, but this somehow skips my default desktop manager (GDM3) and boot straight into LXDE (with no menus!). In /etc/X11/default-diplay-manager I have: /usr/sbin/gdm3 ? How do I get startx -- :1 to start a desktop manager?
Fourth question: When I did the above startx -- :1 as root, it would start the X session in the same tty (e.g. tty2) where I was logged in as root running the startx command. It used to be (in older Linux versions) that startx -- :1 would start an X session on tty8 (and the default would be :0 on tty7). Is this the (new) way things are supposed to work? Or is there something wrong with my setup?
Question 5: Once I have started an LXDE session as root, how do I get it to show the full application menu that my regular user can see? Can I just copy the config files over? Which ones? Or is there a better way?
Question 6: Gnome used to start fine. Then I ran Gnome on Wayland once, and now regular Gnome (on X?) no longer runs, but give me a "Oops! Something went wrong" error and Alt-F4 just takes me back to GDM3. Classic Gnome and Gnome on Wayland still runs OK. Should I log a bug report?

Alright, my boss has discovered an odd issue with KDE4.4 on his laptop. He downloaded a Superman wallpaper for desktop 3 (he has four desktops) using the "Get new wallpapers" functionality, and he downloaded one to his Pictures directory inside his home directory and set it as the background for desktop 1. Now if he logs off and back on, everything is fine, but if he reboots both wallpapers are lost. If he goes into the desktop settings, the wallpapers are there and selected, but they won't show up unless he clicks OK again

I use Debian Squeeze and I have the following desktop environment installed: fluxbox, lxde, openbox and icewm. I make login in text mode and I start X using startx command manually in terminal. When I do that, fluxbox is loaded, because my ~/.xinitrc is configured this way:
#!/bin/sh
# fix dbus problem
eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
# start session
exec startfluxbox
[Code]...
And "%session" is the variable value (fluxbox/lxde/openbox/icewm) chosen during the graphical login. This script works with Slim, but I want to login in a non-graphical mode. Could I use this script somehow to do a non-graphical login using startx? Is there some way that I could run startx with some parameter that it would pass the "%session" value to .xinitrc?

I just installed Debian 8 and ran vnc4server. I want to get Gnome on a client computer so I read some threads on the internet telling me to edit the ~/.vnc/xstartup file, which I did. Unfortunately I've tried multiple edits of this file and I cannot get it to work properly. Any working script of what it should look like for the latest stable version of Debian?

I am running maverick 10.10 with ATI drivers and two monitors. When I boot up both monitors are enabled and in multidisplay mode, showing the login widget and background, but when I log in the second monitor gets disabled and I have to use the ATI control panel to reconfigure to multidisplay. Not a major issue but rather annoying. This also happened with 10.04 LTS BTW. I was hoping for better behaviour in 10.10.
Is there a way to persist the ati control panel configuration across reboot +relogin ? Why would gnome desktop startup disable multidisplay ( and where might that be configured ) ?
I can't see anything obvious in /etc/gdm for this. xorg.conf lists both monitors enabled.

After upgrading the distribution from 10.1 to 11.3 I was not able to start the GNome-Desktop. The first error message I received was "maximum number of x display failures reached". I figured out that there was a problem with the ATI Display driver. I guess I fixed this one now, since I do get a Login-Screen.
But after login, I only have a completely empty Desktop (no Icons, no Taskbar, etc.). Also Keyboard-Shortcuts don't work. I tried it with different user-logins, but always the same result. Then I found information regarding gconftool-2 and the recursive -unset switch. Tried this one for /apps/panel and /apps/nautilus. But still no Desktop. Below is some information from .xsession-errors, which I don't know how to resolve.

I have updated Opensuse 11.3 to 11.4. I have also updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers. Now, when Gnome desktop starts it freezes: it draws all the shortcuts on the desktop but I cannot use my wired mouse to click anything as if the desktop has freezed. The cursor shows that something is loading. I cannot also use Ctl + F2 to start xterm... But I can use Ctl + Alt + F12, so the keyboard is working.

opensuse v11.2 The Gnome help describes how to install fonts: copy the font files to </usr/share/fonts>. I have some Type1 fonts with PFB, PFM, AFM and sometimes INF face files. The only ones I see in the <Type1> directory are AFM and PFA. Which font files does Gnome actually require? Is a PFA needed? Are the font files moved/deleted from </usr/share/fonts/> after installation? Is there a more obvious way to install fonts in Gnome?

What I try is to execute Linux programs from Windows. What I do:
- I run an X Sever in Windows (Xmin).
- I connect to Linux server using putty.
- Stablish DISPLAY to Windows X Server.
- Run Linux application.
Really, what I do for simplifying the work is create, in a shared folder, Windows direct access to do this work. Ex: I create a link called "tora - Run Oracle Administration Tool.lnk".
When users want to run Tora in Windows, they don't have to install it. Just press the link and it runs a .cmd which does the previous operations. So users can run konsole, LibreOffice, tora, ... and all Linux programs as if they where installed in Windows Clients. And as the Linux and Windows computers are joined to Active Directory, each users access has its own configuration for each program.
Thus, they can try this programs without having to install them.
So as I can run all Linux programs... Why not allowing to run a remote desktop (I know I can do it with Vnc, Xrdp, NX, ...) If user run "konsole", a Linux konsole is open in Windows client. And then he can open X programs (I don't create links for all Linux programs, so the can run the konsole link and run any program). After displaying konsole, if I type "konqueror", konqueror is opened in Windows client.
If type kdesktop, desktop of kde is open, but the menu bar, tool bar doesn't appear...
Here is an image: [URL]
I detail it:
- My client is a Windows 7.
- Open a konsole in a remote linux (titled shell-konsole)
- Run kdesktop command.
- A new window titled "KDE Desktop" is opened.
But no menu or application bar is opened. An it doesn't takes my configuration (my configuration is Spanish).
How can I add menu and application bar to that desktop?
