Ubuntu :: Changing Icon And Setting User Permissions?

I tried to place a mono icon in usr/icons/etc but I didn't have the permission to do so. I tried to change my user profile to Admin, thinking I could go back to custom, but that hasn't and it isn't allowing me to go back to my previous setting.
Within minutes of being an Admin user I noticed I couldn't even unmount something. I really need to figure out how to change my profile back to default.
After that has been dealt with, I would like some guidance on how to gain root access to put my icon where it needs to be.

I recently got a new external drive and backed all my files up on the new external: movies, music, docs, etc. Now all my files have permission rights to the root only. I was able to change this by open up nautilis from a terminal in root and change the permission on the whole drive to my current user so I can access the files, copy & delete the files. I wanted to change some music file information in Kynamo this morning and was not able to since all the individual files still belong to the root. How can I change this permission issue without having to change each individual file?

I wanna make a small web server for local use , I've installed apache, every thing works fine I'm the root
I wanna protect the folder that contain the htdocs files (www), i don't want any users that not in root group to access (not even read)
I changed the permission of the htdocs folder as next
Owner: www (apache user)
per: creat , delete
group: root
per: creat , delete
other: none
it only works on the main folder that i changed its permissions ! not all sub folders and files ! were my steps right ? and are their anyway to change all folders and files at once ?

im looking at changing the computer systems over to Ubuntu, at a scout campsite im staff at. i have sorted some filtering out with dansguardian.
but how do i limit the powers of users, so remove all the administrative side and most importantly stop a user changing the network proxy setting.
i have used ubuntu before but not for a while, so im a bit of a newbie atm.

How can i grant permission for files to specific user or specific group ??
Updated:
We have 3 groups: "g12" ("u1" and "u2), "g34" and "g56".
"g12" should only read the file.
"g34" should write and read it.
"g56" should have all permissions (rwx).
And others should not access the file at all.

I am currently trying to replace my Windows Server with a CentOS 5.3 box running nfsd for file serving. I have it all up and running however I cant see anyway of securing user access rights to the shares as all you need to access them is just clone the User ID of a user authorized to access the share of any Linux system which seems a bit insecure to me? I was wondering if there was any advice on securing access to server shares in CentOS.

I'm struggling to understand an aspect of mounting and mountpoints with /etc/fstab. There is a large number of sites and threads that make recommendations using things like uid, gid, umask, and other options. These methods, however, which I've used, are file-system specific, useful only for filesystems such as (V)FAT and NTFS that allow them.My current situation is that I am mounting partition /dev/sdb5 in, let's call it /media/myMount. My goals:Mount this partition automatically upon boot using /etc/fstab...The partition should be fully accessible only to a specific user or group.What I've done is create the mount point in /media:
If user michapma were to carry out the mount, I believe it would work; however, I want the mount to happen automatically during boot. So, how can I achieve my user (or group) permission goals for this and any other such partitions using fstab?The manpage for mount has been helpful, but after reading many tutorials and forum threads, the only way I know how to do it is to have the user do the mounting or rely on the file-system specific options.

I'm using ubuntu 9.10. I used the command:
root@aduait-laptop:~# sudo chown -R root:root /media/104B-FF96/Private to set the permissions of Private folder for root but it is giving error:

Finally I managed to install my printer/scanner drivers.The last thing I need to do is to add the following two lines to 40-libsane.rules (which is a read only file):# Brother scanners ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes".How can I change permissions for this file or add these lines without changing permissions?

I have a problem with my external hdd, I mounted it manually and in the mount table it says ive got rw permissions. But when i try to change permissions it says:
chmod: changing permissions of `whatever': read-only filesystem.
This is my mount table:

The problem is whenever we reboot the system the permissions of / dev/lp0 (line printer) is changing. So every time we are changing the / dev/lp0 permissions through root using chmod 777 /dev/lp0
Is there any smooth solution for this? Why the /dev/lp0 permissions are changed with every reboot?

When you install Firefox for example, it also installs it's icons on my machine.
But let's say I want to change the Firefox icon from the default one to this one: [URL]... I would assume that all I need to do is find where the default Firefox icon is stored, delete it (or move it elsewhere), and replace it by the new one. But where does Ubuntu store the default icons for Firefox?

im looking to allow virtualbox raw disk access to /dev/sdb
currently if i
ls -l /dev/sdb
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8,2010-01-04 17:00 /dev/sdb
now if i chmod this to 777 or use chown to change the owner this temporarily works but after a few moments it defaults back to its original permissions.
is there a way i can define the permission? i was thinking fstab but i can't have a mount point?

I use a USB drive to store most of my personal and work files, and I use it both at home and at work (two different machines, both running Ubuntu). The drive is encrypted, and is accessed using TrueCrypt (the entire drive is encrypted as a device rather than an encrypted file on the device). The TrueCrypt device is formatted as ext3/ext4.
I have a problem with certain file permissions being changed to read-only (rw-r--r--) after mounting the drive. This happens after I have used it on one computer, and then I mount it on the other. Even though I have been setting write permissions to all (chmod -R a+rw *) to get around this problem, when I mount on the other machine the write access is gone. I don't want to keep manually changing permissions; I would like the file permissions to stay as I set them.I'm using the same version of TrueCrypt at work and at home. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 at work, and 9.10 at home.I do have different usernames on these computers, and I suspect that is the problem (but don't see why this would change file permissions for all users).

I installed Ubuntu from the alternate cd a few days ago to save space and resources on a very old laptop. (install command line, then add what I wanted) But I have struck an interesting problem with file permissions. Various programs like synaptic, leafpad, pcman, Banshee, all require I enter the root password to execute them (or sudo command from terminal). I want to change synaptic from root ownership to sudo and leafpad etc to execute without using the sudo command in terminal. I could get comments on the commands before I execute them in terminal and if I am introducing a security problem, as I am still learning bash. $ sudo chown sudo:sudo synaptic
I would still be asked for my sudo password before being able to open synaptic? As in standard Ubuntu instead of root password.$ sudo chmod 777 leafpad pcman Banshee All users could open these programs from the menu? I have my admin account and a general account which I use for everyday things like surfing the net and listening to music.

I have two computers (one at work, one laptop) that I use daily. Both are running Ubuntu 10.04. I frequently use a usb stick to transfer files from one to the other. Somehow, every time I do this, all files get turned into executables (as if I did a chmod a+x on them...)
This happens every time I use the usb stick. I've reformatted the stick, but still this problem persists... anyone have any ideas on what is going on? It is really getting annoying to have to zip up folders so this doesn't happen...

I know how to install icons but i do not want to do it that way because almost all of the icons pack out there are incomplete leaving some of my programs with no icons if i install it.
Now i want to use ubuntu icon but i just want to change the icons of the folders only. Can anybody direct me to the folder where the default ubuntu "Humanity" icons are stored?
I only want to replace the humanity folder with the new folder icon which i found.

i have been trying to change the menu logo icon with the ubuntutweak option.. after i load the 24x24 png image the panel reloads but the image doesnt change... how do i change it? now the menu icon doesnt open the menu at first click, i have to click on it a couple of times and then it opens

I created a custom launcher for 2 wine programs on my desktop and dragged them to my launcher to add them. They were both using the default cup of wine icon.The first one kept this icon, the second one changed to the default custom launcher icon for gnome. I have since changed them to the games real icons but they aren't changing in the launcher even after removing and re-adding it to the launcher.So 2 things are happening here, it seems the launcher is unable to use the same icon multiple times, and the launcher is "remembering" the icon's somewhere separatly from what the custom launcher is saying the icon should be.

Is there a way to have a directory automatically change the permissions of a file that is written to it? I have a program which saves files to a directory, and gives those files read-only permissions to members in the group. This is a problem, because other users of my computer need to be able to edit these files. The directory itself has rw permissions for group members.
I guess what I am looking for is a way for the directory permissions to "override" the permissions the program is trying to save the files as. For example, if the directory has "rw" permissions for the group, then any file saved to it will automatically get the same permissions, regardless of what the program writing the file is trying to do.

We have a development server not accessible to the public used for testing which was setup for us. When attempting to have my PHP scripts upload an image to a folder, I have to CHMOD the folder to 777. Ideally, when a folder is created it has permissions set to 755 - I want to be able to upload to them. Is there a way to change permissions to allow the PHP scripts that run to be able to write to a folder? I know it has something to do with owner or group, but I don't know where to start.

i have this problem and i may need professional help; it appears smb4k made my /etc/sudoers file writable (according to log), hence, any sudo command will coerce this error:
Code: ubuntu@ubuntu~$ sudo any sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440 sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting i wanted to boot into recovery console and chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers, but it's a live system - it doesn't have a recovery mode. I often run "gulp", a networking utility, to capture data from an instrument on "eth1". By default gulp must be run as root to have access to the ethernet port, and when I'm the only one running it, that's fine. But I need to let several other users to capture data and don't want to give them all sudo permissions for both gulp, and more importantly, 'chmod'. Is there anyway to change the permissions of eth1 to allow all users to open it and avoid sudo entirely? This is on a Red Hat/Fedora machine.

I've compiled my own code as root (long story why) anyway I now need to switch this to a normal user to compile. So I did a simple copy/paste (using gnome/debian lenny) to my home/user. I then logged in as used to see the folders with a padlock and permissions for root only. So I logged back in as root, change permissions to the used, check they were all ok, logged back in as user, and it still says owner root, even thought when I log in as root it shows user as owner.

Recently updated to 10.10 Wondering if it's possible to change the start icon on the gnome panel? In the past I have been able to accomplish this by navigating to the theme's icon folder (usr/share/icons), replacing it with my new icon, updating the cache and restarting gnome. That method doesn't seem to be working however.

I recently got an old computer to use as a server and I have a whole list of things I want to do on it, but I'm having difficulties.When I installed the server, I installed AMP, FTP, Samba, CUPS, and some other items. I made a user account called 'nessdan' which (currently!) is in these groups:
www-data adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin sambashare admin
The www-data group was added because I wanted to FTP my site files into '/var/www/' . Okay, that ended up working out for me. This is where things got sticky. I installed PHPMyAdmin and the files went to '/usr/share/phpmyadmin/' . I wanted to install a new theme so I downloaded it onto my Laptop, then logged in via FTP but couldn't transfer files into there! It turns out the folder was owned by 'root' and was in the group 'root'. The only thing I could come up with was to change that folders permissions so the owner was 'nessdan' and the group 'admin'. I was going to do that to the entire /usr/share/ folder but I didn't know whether or not I should be changing the permissions in the first place.
But the the trend continues! I have my print server setup and working but I wanted the server to hold the Windows drivers, so I went to '/var/lib/samba/' to do some work but noticed that a lot of the files' permissions were locked down to read only and the owner and group were 'root' . I ended up doing a 'chmod 775' and changing the owner and group to 'nessdan' and 'admin', respectively. Well I transfered over the files but now the service nmbd isn't working. The good news is, I expected to mess something up along the way and had already planned on reinstalling Ubuntu Server 10.10. I've only had the server for 4 days now and I knew from the beginning I'd be wiping it clean. I want to know how to set this thing up proper and the biggest problem is getting access into folders so I can FTP into them.When I do wipe my PC clean and start anew, how should I go about the changes that I did before (PHPMyAdmin, Samba Driver Folder)?

I have a shared folder set up that allows all users on the computer to have access to all the music on the computer. In the folder with all the music the group 'music' has permission to add and delete files and all users are members of 'music'. This should allow all users to have complete access to these files, however, when I add files to the folder they retain their original permissions and do not take on the permissions of the folder. I could change the permissions of the files to reflect the folder every time I add a cd. But that is annoying. What I am wondering is if there is any way to make files automatically reflect the permissions on the folder they are moved into.
