Ubuntu :: Changed Name And Wont Load?
May 5, 2011
(first and formost let me start by saying that im currently using ubuntu 10.10)ok so im not claiming to be a genius or anything but in my infinite wisdom i wanted to change the names that came up in the terminal because it wasnt cool enough . you know xxx@xxxx: /$i went onto google to see if this was possible and saw that all i had to do was input the following commands.... gksu gedit /etc/hosts andgksu gedit /etc/hostnameand change it to the new names. well it worked...sorta. from what i could tell the group name was changed but not the username. so i then went to system---> preferences----->username groupnames (***this order might be typed in wrong since im NOT in ubuntu!!!) and proceeded to change the info there. I went ahead and selected the name and then clicked on the advance setting. From what I remember, I went into the last tab and saw the old username. I went ahead again and changed it to the new name that I wanted. Not sure if this matter but I chose a first and a last name with a space (xxxx xxxx). Any who, it then asked me if I wanted to copy something from one folder to the other....and agian i said sure why not.
After everything copied over, i decided to restart my comp to make sure everything worked accordingly. well that's when all the fun started. as it rebooted i started to get wonderful little messages. they are 1. hostname main process xxx terminated with status 12. Could not update iceauthority file /home/xxxx/.ICEauthority3. there is a problem with the configuration server. (usr/lib/libgconf2-4)gconf-sanity-check2-exited with status 256)4. nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/xxxx/desktop,/home/xxxx/.nautilusit then takes me to a bare original desktop background that ubuntu 10.10 came with wih. i then started to research what could be the problem and found nothing. what i did stumble upon was this...i hit ALT + F2 and typed "gksu nautilus"it brought up a folder. I started clicking away randomly and managed to find all of my files sitting nicely just waiting for my return. Additionally, I somehow randomly saved a blank file on the desktop. I then right clicked it and chose to open it with Mozilla. It opened it up!!!. i then managed to surf as usual like nothing ever happened.so, im not sure where to go from here. ALL my files are still there and im still able to surf the web albeit in a odd manner. so this being my case........CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME GET BACK TO WHERE I USE TO BE?Im knew to Ubuntu (clearly) and have spent days on end getting everything to work just right. I would hate to start everything from scratch

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox, epiphany, opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows. Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success. The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.
Here are my specs:
I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:
[Code]...
What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

I noticed my Firefox loading rather slow (took around 5 - 7 seconds to load and navigate pages, even google, and it would sometimes become unresponsive), I thought it may have been a addon problem, so I opened up a new Firefox profile with no addons but the browser crashed upon loading the certain page I was trying to view, and I figured I'd look into it later and use Chromium for a while (I'll be open, I was trying to watch an pron tube site, and when your, you know, you don't really feel like stopping to go technical and try to fix it or whatever), but Chromium said that the flash player wasn't installed. I thought it was kinda odd, but then again I didn't want to go technical and thought maybe since mozilla firefoxs engine loaded the flash, I'd use Mozilla Seamonkey which uses the same gecko engine. The flash wasn't working either on there.
I tried looking up to see if there was a 64bit deb package for flash, but they didn't have it, and I seen someone mention that doing the 'apt-get upgrade' upgrades it, so I did that, and it also said it installed some extra packages when doing it, but I figured it was just that getlibs grabbing the extra dependencies and went along with installing them (after all there shouldnt be much to lose since its from the repository, right?)
I restarted the computer to give the updates a chance to take effect (it didn't mention to restart, but I thought I'd go ahead and do it anyways to ensure it updated okay).
This is where the booting problem comes in: When my laptop restarted, the loading was going across very slowly (I have ubuntu studio installed through regular ubuntu, so it was showing the text filling up), normally it would just fill a little bit of the first "U" in "Ubuntu Studio" and then be done quickly, but now it goes slowly all the way, and when it fills "Ubuntu Studio", it stills stays there, it doesn't load on.
I pressed the down button to see the terminal and it says this:
Code:
I have no clue what to do now, and I wanted to ask for help before I go trying myself editing the command line boot process.

I reinstalled fedora the other day, and it's been working just fine, apart from the internet. It shows that I have a full connection with the wireless network, but it's really difficult to actually load a page. 80% of the time it just fails and shows "Page Load Error". It's really frustrating because it is connected to the internet. In fact, the icon in the address bar even loads from the site I try to access, but websites just will not load.
I've tested my wireless internet with another laptop which is running vista, and it works perfectly on that. Also, I'm running Fedora 10 on an Acer Extensa laptop.

I want to load grub2 from grub4dos.I want to load directly the grub2 core. I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes). So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. But I think I have to edit --set-root
What I dont know is how.
In hdd 0,7 (sda8) I have Ubuntu 10.10 and /boot/grub/core.img is in sda8 (hd0.7)
I tried this way:
Code:
title grub2
find --set-root /boot/grub/core.img
kernel /boot/grub/core.img

I dual boot XP and FC14 and have 2 routers. I can connect and ping one of these routers when I'm in FC and I have an IP address I just can't load any websites. When I connect to the other router (my main router) it works fine. When I boot into XP and connect to the problem router I can load pages fine. It's only when I'm on FC14 and connect to the problem router that I can't load pages even though I have an IP and can ping around.

I recently got a T-Mobile Tap and I've been trying to connect it via USB to my laptop running Lucid. When I open up the icon that shows up on my desktop after connecting it, I can't run the setup files inside. It says: The file '/media/HUAWEI/checksetup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit. When I try to change the permissions from ready only, I get: Sorry, could not change the permissions of"checksetup.exe": Error setting permissions: Read-only file systemCan I tried calling T-Mobile but they said they don't troubleshoot with Linux. They said it's an "older operating system".

I may have sabotaged my installation beyond repair, but I am nourishing a cautious optimism, as justified below, and would warmly welcome any ideas. Here's the scoop:The harddrive on my Dell Latitude is divided into a number of partitions; I used to run a Windows-Linux dual boot, so I had some EXT3, some NTFS, and some FAT32 partitions, but a few months ago decided to eliminate the windows, and thus converted the ntfs partition into a linux partition. I've been using this newly converted partition for temporary backups; it held no important data. This, at least, was my supposition: yesterday, I decided to change the label on this partition (cosmetic motives), and after cavalierly making the change with GPARTED, I now can't log in.
A few clues about what could be going on:1. The system boots up fine; when I get to the login screen, however, and enter my name and password, I get the following error message: "GDM could not write to your authorization file. This could mean that you are out of disk space or that your home directory could not be opened for writing. in any case, it is not possible to log in. Please contact your system administrator."2. All my files are intact (following some advice I saw posted on the forums, I hit cnt + alt + F1 and was able to log in) and as far as I can tell, I am not out of disk space. This gives me hope that maybe I can restore the system without totally reinstalling Ubuntu. That is about all I know. If anyone has any thoughts as to what might be going on, I would be very happy to hear them.

Desktop PC Dual boot XP/Linux Mint Laptop was Dual boot Vista/Linux Mint.
Changed my Laptop set up from dual boot Vista/Linux Mint 8 to Vista/Ubuntu 9.10.
I have two printers one of which (Canon BJC300) is physically connected to the Desktop PC. The other is netorked through a wireless router. Worked find with Samba/Cups in Linux Mint. Can't get it to work with Ubuntu. (Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu).
Desktop PC Name is "pcname"
Desktop PC Workgroup is "pcworkgroup"
Printer Name is "Canon BJC 3000"
Not really but they'll do for the demo.
Set up printer in Ubuntu smb://pcworkgroup/pcname/Canon BJC 3000
Appears to accept it that but doesn't print. Times out with 'printer unaccessible'.
Where do I need to concentrate my efforts?
Are there some permissions I've overlooked. I haven't altered anything on the Desktop PC.

Yesterday I've installed KDE (kubuntu-desktop) upon Ubuntu to give it a try after a very long time I didn't use KDE. I decided to remove it and go back to GNOME. I removed the KDE packages using this sudo:
[Code]....
The KDE has been removed but some how some of the font changed.
The font settings in the Appearance->Fonts are as they suppose to be (Sans,10...).

Using thunderbird for email, as several users of this computer have individual preferences. Worked in 10.10 and previous. Upgraded to 11.04 this morning, had to install from CD due to my mistake. Changed computer name too. No worries, have done this before. Added new account to Thunderbird. Copied over mail folders too. Application is good to go. However, when checking email now get reply from server that password is invalid. Checked all account settings within T-Bird but cannot locate password setttings for this server/account. Appears to use something called STARTTLS. How to access this store of passwords?

I've made a really critical and simple mistake and now I am trying to recover my computer. I accidentally logged into root and was trying to change permissions for the current directory with "." but instead used a "/" which started changing permissions of everything from / recursively. I quickly realized the mistake I made after it started and aborted the process by pressing ctrl+C. However I know many things are still not right because, even though I tried to reboot and change the permissions back to 0755 from the recovery mode root console. I still get errors when gnome tries to start..Here is the exact error I am getting. "There is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256". I'm pretty sure because of the way I aborted or because of the time the filesystem was running with 644 permissions, some amount of damage was done. Any way to recover it to normal? Or is there a way to recover it from the Ubuntu CD?

I am relatively familiar with Ubuntu, but some time last week it updated and now ALT + Tab temporarily minimizes windows to switch between open apps and shows a little window with icons representing the open apps. I much preferred the old way of just switching between them without minimizing and the more graphically appealing (I guess to some) window. I have checked Keyboard Shortcuts and it seems that I no longer have that my original option available, is there another way to select that option, or add it back to the keyboard shortcuts or am I just stuck with it unless I decide to back up to a previous release? Hope this made sense, and I won't be able to try any suggestions until tomorrow so please feel free to throw as many suggestions as you want to me and I will try them all one by one tomorrow morning.

I have been learning about Ubuntu since 8.10. I have my two computers running dual boot (W7 + 8.04 & Vista + 9.10).
Sorry if this is a noob question, but I have noticed that each time there's a new kernel (now I have 2.6.31.16-generic), the grub OS selection screen adds 2 lines:
- One for the new kernel
- One for the new kernel - recovery mode
So, since I installed Karmic (2.6.31.14) Ubuntu Update has added 4 rows and shows code...
What is the rationale behinf this?
Why would I want to boot using the previous kernel versions?
In my laptop, it's GRUB 2. How can I eliminate the unused options?
