Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.
Am running Ubuntu NBR as the sole OS on my Dell Mini 9. Switched over in March to 9.10 NBR. Everything worked fine.Upgraded to 10.04 when it was released. It's awesome EXCEPT for this busy cursor thing. As soon as I log in, all the time my cursor is the spinning wheel of busyness.... It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations. If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently got a T-Mobile Tap and I've been trying to connect it via USB to my laptop running Lucid. When I open up the icon that shows up on my desktop after connecting it, I can't run the setup files inside. It says: The file '/media/HUAWEI/checksetup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit. When I try to change the permissions from ready only, I get: Sorry, could not change the permissions of"checksetup.exe": Error setting permissions: Read-only file systemCan I tried calling T-Mobile but they said they don't troubleshoot with Linux. They said it's an "older operating system".

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 and the cursor is white on a white background. I tried changing it using the Appearance settings and only the size changed, not the colour.
Can anyone explain why this is happening, and how to change the cursor so that it is visible. Have never had this trouble with any other Linux distro, so it's not hardware.
How can be changed a symlink from the /etc/rc2.d directory.I want tho change the time of start from S20 to S60.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI may have sabotaged my installation beyond repair, but I am nourishing a cautious optimism, as justified below, and would warmly welcome any ideas. Here's the scoop:The harddrive on my Dell Latitude is divided into a number of partitions; I used to run a Windows-Linux dual boot, so I had some EXT3, some NTFS, and some FAT32 partitions, but a few months ago decided to eliminate the windows, and thus converted the ntfs partition into a linux partition. I've been using this newly converted partition for temporary backups; it held no important data. This, at least, was my supposition: yesterday, I decided to change the label on this partition (cosmetic motives), and after cavalierly making the change with GPARTED, I now can't log in.
A few clues about what could be going on:1. The system boots up fine; when I get to the login screen, however, and enter my name and password, I get the following error message: "GDM could not write to your authorization file. This could mean that you are out of disk space or that your home directory could not be opened for writing. in any case, it is not possible to log in. Please contact your system administrator."2. All my files are intact (following some advice I saw posted on the forums, I hit cnt + alt + F1 and was able to log in) and as far as I can tell, I am not out of disk space. This gives me hope that maybe I can restore the system without totally reinstalling Ubuntu. That is about all I know. If anyone has any thoughts as to what might be going on, I would be very happy to hear them.
Desktop PC Dual boot XP/Linux Mint Laptop was Dual boot Vista/Linux Mint.
Changed my Laptop set up from dual boot Vista/Linux Mint 8 to Vista/Ubuntu 9.10.
I have two printers one of which (Canon BJC300) is physically connected to the Desktop PC. The other is netorked through a wireless router. Worked find with Samba/Cups in Linux Mint. Can't get it to work with Ubuntu. (Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu).
Desktop PC Name is "pcname"
Desktop PC Workgroup is "pcworkgroup"
Printer Name is "Canon BJC 3000"
Not really but they'll do for the demo.
Set up printer in Ubuntu smb://pcworkgroup/pcname/Canon BJC 3000
Appears to accept it that but doesn't print. Times out with 'printer unaccessible'.
Where do I need to concentrate my efforts?
Are there some permissions I've overlooked. I haven't altered anything on the Desktop PC.
Yesterday I've installed KDE (kubuntu-desktop) upon Ubuntu to give it a try after a very long time I didn't use KDE. I decided to remove it and go back to GNOME. I removed the KDE packages using this sudo:
[Code]....
The KDE has been removed but some how some of the font changed.
The font settings in the Appearance->Fonts are as they suppose to be (Sans,10...).
I don't know if this is as the result of todays updates for certain. But it's surely likely. See attached:

View 2 Replies View Related(first and formost let me start by saying that im currently using ubuntu 10.10)ok so im not claiming to be a genius or anything but in my infinite wisdom i wanted to change the names that came up in the terminal because it wasnt cool enough . you know xxx@xxxx: /$i went onto google to see if this was possible and saw that all i had to do was input the following commands.... gksu gedit /etc/hosts andgksu gedit /etc/hostnameand change it to the new names. well it worked...sorta. from what i could tell the group name was changed but not the username. so i then went to system---> preferences----->username groupnames (***this order might be typed in wrong since im NOT in ubuntu!!!) and proceeded to change the info there. I went ahead and selected the name and then clicked on the advance setting. From what I remember, I went into the last tab and saw the old username. I went ahead again and changed it to the new name that I wanted. Not sure if this matter but I chose a first and a last name with a space (xxxx xxxx). Any who, it then asked me if I wanted to copy something from one folder to the other....and agian i said sure why not.
After everything copied over, i decided to restart my comp to make sure everything worked accordingly. well that's when all the fun started. as it rebooted i started to get wonderful little messages. they are 1. hostname main process xxx terminated with status 12. Could not update iceauthority file /home/xxxx/.ICEauthority3. there is a problem with the configuration server. (usr/lib/libgconf2-4)gconf-sanity-check2-exited with status 256)4. nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/xxxx/desktop,/home/xxxx/.nautilusit then takes me to a bare original desktop background that ubuntu 10.10 came with wih. i then started to research what could be the problem and found nothing. what i did stumble upon was this...i hit ALT + F2 and typed "gksu nautilus"it brought up a folder. I started clicking away randomly and managed to find all of my files sitting nicely just waiting for my return. Additionally, I somehow randomly saved a blank file on the desktop. I then right clicked it and chose to open it with Mozilla. It opened it up!!!. i then managed to surf as usual like nothing ever happened.so, im not sure where to go from here. ALL my files are still there and im still able to surf the web albeit in a odd manner. so this being my case........CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME GET BACK TO WHERE I USE TO BE?Im knew to Ubuntu (clearly) and have spent days on end getting everything to work just right. I would hate to start everything from scratch
I've made a really critical and simple mistake and now I am trying to recover my computer. I accidentally logged into root and was trying to change permissions for the current directory with "." but instead used a "/" which started changing permissions of everything from / recursively. I quickly realized the mistake I made after it started and aborted the process by pressing ctrl+C. However I know many things are still not right because, even though I tried to reboot and change the permissions back to 0755 from the recovery mode root console. I still get errors when gnome tries to start..Here is the exact error I am getting. "There is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256". I'm pretty sure because of the way I aborted or because of the time the filesystem was running with 644 permissions, some amount of damage was done. Any way to recover it to normal? Or is there a way to recover it from the Ubuntu CD?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am relatively familiar with Ubuntu, but some time last week it updated and now ALT + Tab temporarily minimizes windows to switch between open apps and shows a little window with icons representing the open apps. I much preferred the old way of just switching between them without minimizing and the more graphically appealing (I guess to some) window. I have checked Keyboard Shortcuts and it seems that I no longer have that my original option available, is there another way to select that option, or add it back to the keyboard shortcuts or am I just stuck with it unless I decide to back up to a previous release? Hope this made sense, and I won't be able to try any suggestions until tomorrow so please feel free to throw as many suggestions as you want to me and I will try them all one by one tomorrow morning.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am not sure when this started for me, but I think in a recent update of Firefox. I am running Ubuuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. I am currently running FF 3.5.6. When I click on a link in a page, or refresh the page, the Arrow/Pointer cursor stays the same in place of the normal busy cursor that I am used to. This is more of an annoyance than a real functional issue, as I can't tell if the page is working except to see the tab showing loading, and the status bar in FF. I have searched the forums, and google/linux, but have not found a cause, nor a fix.
I also use Opera and Chrome at times and the busy cursor works there as expected. I also use Thunderbird and it is working there. So, I believe it is only related to FF. My addons are as follows, but I haven't added anything recently, and it was working before.
Extensions:
ColorfulTabs 4.1
Live HTTP Headers 0.15
Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.8
Web Developer 1.1.8

This is driving me up the wall; my mouse cursor disappears whenever I cross from monitor 1 to monitor 2, but returns after moving the mouse around. I've been reading to other posts and tried changing themes etc, but now I have slightly messed up desktop as well - my minimise/restore/close buttons have gone, they only appear when I mouse over where they should be.
There are several things I like about Karmic, but I only migrated to it from Hardy so that the ATI drivers would work correctly for my new HD5770 graphics card, otherwise I would have stayed with Hardy. how I can get the mouse cursor to stay visible all the time?
Installed linux mint in a virtual box (ose).Only problem, can't get the cursor out of the window, thus unabling me to unmount the iso so keeps reinstalling.Does anyone know how to set it so I can get the cursor to move outside the virtual box.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt says in the geany documentation that i can specify multiple cursor positions. But after i define a snippet like that - lets say for example:
Code:
for=for ($i = 0; $i < %cursor%; $i++){ %cursor% }
it only takes me to the first cursor point. A second tab results in a regular tab being inserted into the code..
