Nov 13, 2010
I'm on Lucid Lynx 10.4 and Gnome. I have a specific partition for my document, which is in the following folder /media/Documents I don't know why a new folder /media/Documents_ has been created, and my files are in this one. Now, files' permissions are the following :
Code:
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 2010-11-13 08:05 Documents
drwxrwxrwx 9 root root 20480 2010-11-13 11:04 Documents_

recently I downloaded warzone 2100. It was downloaded in tar.gz format. I searched for the way to install it and I am not able to install it. I unzipped the folder and then changed my directory to the unzipped folder. After that I used ./configure. After doing this, when I write make, it gives error and says no make file found. What can I do to solve this problem.

So I had this folder containing two open office text documents, I hibernated my computer a few times while I was working on one, then when I came back I couldn't save it because apparently it was open by someone else so I exited out and tried to open it again, but the folder it was stored in turned into a picture of a white safe with a play icon on the top right corner, and when I open it, it is just the picture.

I'm running Natty with the ambience theme. For some reason, my folder appearance has changed without me doing anything. See its present state here.
How do I get it back to the default setting?

When I freshly installed Kubuntu all was just fine.I was curious about how the netbook environment would look even though I am on a Desktop. So I tried it out and everything went fine.I switched back to the Desktop environment and noticed that the widget on my desktop, which normally shows the items of my desktop folder, changed into an icon I have to click first before I can see the content.I rather have it as if was when I installed Kubuntu.

I accidentally changed etc., folder ownership, and now my computer doesn't even start up. I tried starting up in failsafe mode and changing the ownership from the root console, but somehow I wasn't allowed to do that. Then I loaded kubuntu from a live disk and I changed etc ownership to root. I thought that would clear up the mess, but apparently live disk's root is not equivalent to system's: when I try to start up the computer I get a message saying the filesystem is readonly. I'm not too concerned, because I have a complete backup, but I'd rather avoid the time of re-installing all my software again.

Anyone know of an app that can auto sort my download folder. The problem is I use torrents and do not want applications stuck with movies, stuck with music. Is there an application that looks at the file extension and moves files accordingly? I know windows has Digital janitor but I do not believe it is supported in linux.

In older versions of ubuntu I could use tab to autocomplete folder names multiple times in one command in a terminal, for example:
Code:
tar -cvf myapp.tar --exclude='/var/www/f[TAB]older-name/cache/*' --exclude='/var/www/f[TAB]older-name/sessions/*' /var/www/f[TAB]older-name
Now only the first tab works, is there any way to get this behavior back?

The solution may to my problem may exist elsewhere, but I had trouble searching/finding it.I just bought a new external drive. The drive is formatted as ext4. I use it mainly in esata mode. Whenever I connect it, it mounts to /media/[UUID], where "[UUID]" is the UUID of the drive. I want it to be located at /media/backup when it is inserted, not in relation the UUID. I have tried putting a new line in my fstab (mount by UUID to folder) to mount the drive. It mounts correctly if the drive is connected to the computer and turned on during startup, but if the drive is off/not connected during startup Ubuntu barks at me. (I press 's' to skip mounting the drive) Is there a way to make external/removable drives mount to a certain location other than /media/[UUID] when they are inserted? I want the drive to mount to the folder while the computer is running, not only during startup.

I work for a school district. We are running in a Windows environment with a Windows domain. It was asked of me if I could get an Ubuntu system on our domain and running without issue, as we would like to tinker with the idea of slowly introducing Ubuntu systems to the network.I have a test system here. I added it to the domain using Likewise-Open. I have Samba installed, etc. Here's the next curve ball that I need answered. All user documents are stored in their individual shares on the same Windows server. In Windows, we use re-directed My Documents, so their My Documents actually points to \serverusersob_dole instead of C:/Documents and Settings/Bob Dole/My Documents.
How can we do this in Ubuntu? I don't care if it re-maps the home directory or creates a folder on the desktop that is linked. Either way, I want to log in to ANY Ubuntu system and blam - I have a link to \windowsserverusersmy_share. I want any user on the domain to be able to do that to any Ubuntu system and have a link to THEIR folder on the Windows server.

I use Debian Squeeze on my laptop, and in my office we have a WinXP box where we store all our documents and stuff. When I'm in the office, I can directly mount my directory to edit documents, and at home/wherever I can use VPN to connect to the box so it's no problem again.
However: I'd like to know if there is a way to set up a directory on my laptop, that I can use even when offline, and then when I'm connected to the office computer, it automatically syncs with it.

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

I recently installed 32bit maverick and wanted to make it login automatically. I tried enabling auto login from Admin > Login but that didnt work and I was still prompted for my password. Then I went to Users & Groups and changed the password option to Do Not ask for password at login now after I reboot, the user list is shown (only 1 user) and it doesnt ask for password after I click on my username.
However, then it gives a few errors (as i vaguely recall):
1. cannot load .ICE directory in my home directory
2. some error 256 about a gconf-sanity-2 file
3. nautilus cannot load my home directory etc
and then it gets stuck without loading anything (blank wallpaper). i ve tried navigating to my home directory using Alt F2, gksudo nautilus and my home dir contents are encrypted by the ecryptfs (there is a readme.txt file and a shortcut). i have tried to decrypt but it doesnt work... i ve also tried to start/stop gdm, and startx but nothing works. if i stop gdm, then the prompt doesnt recognize my password and keeps on rejecting the commands i enter... I think this has something to do with the home dir not being decrypted due to the dont ask for paswd option... how can i disable the dont ask for pwd without the gui (i can access my / by booting through an external usb).

I would like to exec a script whenever a user mount a device. The device could be an internal device (for example a partition on a second hard disk) or a removable one (for example a usb hard disk). The script must have sudo capabilities even if the user is not included in the admin group. Is it possible?
The specific question:
I would like to add acl option to a device whenever it is mounted.
I tried fstab but it's changing the behaviour of nautilus see:
[URL]... so I would like to create a script with the command
Code:
sudo mount -o remount,acl /media/data
and auto execute it any time data is mounted.

I code primarily in jQuery/JavaScript, and I'm looking for a text editor for Linux that has auto-indent and auto-outdent (seems to be tough to find that). Any suggestions? I've checked Gedit, Cream, vim, Bluefish.None of them seem to have this feature.

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.
Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

I press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet). Here are my problems:
1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.
And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?

I recently installed a server with Software RAID. I tested by powering it down, unplugging one drive and powering it up. Magically, it worked!I found out later that I have to manually add individual devices like md1 to sda2 md2 to sda4. I got all of them added and rebuilt but my question is: Is there a way to make it so that if I "removed" a drive and put it back, the system will senses the new drive and rebuilds based on some internal table?

I'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)
Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

I have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same). With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above. But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu, which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder. Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place

When I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.
