I've been wondering about how I can change settings on the notifications that show on the screen when a wireless connection is established, when I get new mail, etc. They look a lot like growl notifications from OSX, but clicking on them doesn't show me anything. View 4 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 11.04, wireless adapter BCM4312.The connection works for a while, for a random length of time from a few minutes to a few hours, then stops working. The laptop says it's connected, and the router says it's connected, but the browser can't find any Web pages, it can't find the router, and there is no response to pings from the router or any other device on the local network or on the Internet. "Host unreachable." When I try to ping to the laptop from another one, it times out.If I shut down the computer and try again a few hours later, it works fine again for a while, then after a while it stops working again.
In case it's relevant, sometimes when I restart networking from the command line, it says "ignoring unknown interface eth1=eth1," even though ifconfig -a lists eth1 as up with an ip address. eth1 is the wireless adapter. Another laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 connects to the same router with no problems.Using a fixed IP address doesn't change anything.
I have those notifications bubbles that appear right and top of my Screen.
Besides being RIDICULOUSLY big, i don't need them

After cleaning up my son's Vista desktop and backing it up, I installed 11.04 alongside Vista.
Issue #1:
Using the Ubuntu Requirements Guide, which says a minimum of 5GB is needed, I went ahead and allocated 15GB, to be safe and allow for future growth. But when it boots, I get this message:
This Computer has only 244.6 MB of disk space remaining
Ubuntu confirms that the installation took up 13+GB of space. Why is this, and how do I correct it? I would be fine with deleting the partition and starting over, but do not want to damage his Vista installation.
I don't understand why these space requirements aren't explained better or even consistent between different official Ubuntu sources. Here's one for 11.04 that specifies that "You must have at least 44MB of memory and 500MB of hard disk space to perform a normal installation." Now, 'normal installation' implies to me that everything is installed, so I don't get it.
Issue #2:
When I turn on the computer or reboot, I get this floating box:

This does not disappear until it has booted Ubuntu, so I do not get any menu to choose between Ubuntu and Vista. Why is this and what's the fix?
Issue #3:
When I plug in his USB Wireless device, the device does not light up, there is no popup box in Ubuntu, and the device does not show up in the Wireless Settings box. How do I get Ubuntu to see this device (or any newly plugged in device) so that it can look for the appropriate driver?
I have problem in making connection to my vpn server I can make connection from windows xp to that but can not open any website and I can not ping 172.16.10.1 when connection established.

I use pidgin for IRC regularly and am wondering if there is a way for it to show notifications when others talk?
I have "others talk in chat" selected for the sound notifications, but I'd really like it to use the visual notifications (the notification applet?), like it does when I'm chatting with someone over IM. Is that possible?

I have a wired internet connection which works fine with my windows 7. When I switch to Ubuntu, when internet cable is plugged, the top right corner, network manager shows connection is established, but when I open firefox I cannot access internet. I tried searching on forums, but I could not make it work. If I type ifconfig command in terminal attached is the output I get, I dont know what is the problem. I want to use Ubuntu than Windows
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got this Acer Revo 3610 nettop about a week ago. I got it to use as an htpc, and decide to do an install of xbmc live on it. I have everything set up the way I want it at this point, but I'm stuck on trying to configure the wireless.
I'm not sure where I should start troubleshooting this thing, but something about this seems off to me.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.
I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.

View 7 Replies View RelatedCurrently I use openSUSE but the 6 months release cycle is starting to bug me a bit so yesterday I have tried Debian Testing daily snapshot created on 20-11-2010, using KDE desktop (I am a KDE fun). All goes well until I try to make a pppoe using KDE's module network manager.
I created the pppoe connection with user and password but I got 2 problems:
- After I have created the connection it doesn't appear along with "Auto eth0" above the button manage connections.
- The pppoe connection is not established (both password and username are correct).
I know that I could use pppoeconf or ceni for that matter, but I am new to debian as I where new to openSUSE 4 years ago and I am still learning, so please don't tell to use them I just want to know if there's a way to use network manager from kde 4.4.5 to establish a pppoe connection (you could name it the GUI way, no worries I like using the console as well). Under openSUSE I have a program called qinternet that helps me with pppoe connection is there something similar under Debian?
I can not change System-->Administration--> Login Screen Settings. I'm not permitted to change. Not even if I run 'sudo gdmsetup' in terminal I have permisson to change.

When I go to change the Visual Effects settings from Normal to either of the other 2 choices, the screen goes black and nothing happens. Could this be a driver issue? Should I buy a video card instead of using on-board and if so, which ones work the best with Ubuntu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.04 with working wlan. I had to restart router & wap. It doesn't seem to ever retry to connect. I know my router & wap are good, I have wireless working on other laptop (running Puppy) I had to go into 'edit connections' in drop down and use 'wireless' tab then edit 'wireless connection 1' and hit 'apply' is there a better way to do this? also, no connections show up with command 'iwconfig' edit: with ifconfig, eth1 si showing data my ip address and packets sent & rcvd. I think I'll try do duplicate this event and use 'ifconfig eth1 down' and then up again to see if it reconnects.
View 1 Replies View Relatedmy netbook shares it's wireless connection to my desktop. i've done this through the gui (edit connections > eth0 > ipv4 settings > shared to others) and it has worked for the last i don't know how many months.recently it had become a bit touchy with regards to how it was set up. it didn't work unless the netbook was already booted and wired in at the time of booting the desktop.now however it's gotten even worse and all i get when i connect them together is

I'm trying to get wireless working in F10. Using pci wireless card with Atheros chipset. To be sure, I tested this hardware with a PCLinuxOS Live CD. Connects to AP perfectly.
Hardware drivers seem all OK in F10, and ifconfig shows wlan0 as expected. When I use the Wireless-Assistant 0.5.7 there's no connection.
Actually, the AP logs show numerous connections and disconnections.

I'm running Slackware64 13.1. When I change the bright of my screen, xfce power manager show a info bar. But now it disappear, when I run xfce4-power-manager from a terminal I get this info:

Running 11.4 and a wifi link to lan, I set up an NFS share with NAS exactly as I had with 11.3.I am now locked out of my system as when I try and boot, the boot process stalls waiting for NFS.Of course there is no wifi link at this stage in the boot process so I am stuffed.There must have been something in the shutting down process which stopped this in 11.3? I have tried safe mode boot but still no luck. Please could somebody help me get past this so I can boot up and then delete the NFS share until there is a fix?How can I look at the boot log, assuming I can ever boot the system again? In addition to the line showing the above NFS problem, there is another long error message which I want to post here for advice. There used to be a log access button somewhere, I thought in Yast but can't see it now.

I allowed all the connection from my provider gateway after that hit. It did not work. I installed a new OS ubuntu 10.04 tls. and assigned the IP address but still I cant acess the internet. For example if I get an IM, how can I adjust the way the IM box in the task bar acts? I put a new theme in I really like, but my IMs and other windows that would normally flash to show they need attention now do nothing, so I don't know when I get an IM or anything. Is there any way I can tweak that?
