I have just managed to get my wireless working with Ubuntu Server 10.04. However, I was wandering if anyone knows how to change the auto connection settings? I would either like to tell it which network to connect to (at the moment it automatically connects to the wrong one) or disable automatic connection.

I'm new to Ubuntu so bear with me. I installed 9.10 from a CD and it looks fine and works OK wired. However, my wireless keeps picking up a connection at home via my Linksys router that is not mine and I can't get around it, blacklist it or delete it. No matter what I do it keeps showing back up as an AutoConnection. It is the same type of router as mine but the security is different (I use WPA-Personal and the offender is WEP). How can I permanently blockdisableetc the extra connection? I can't get on my home network until the bad autoconnection is gone. More info: I use an IBM R40 into which I installed a Toshiba mini-PC wireless card. I know it works as I have used it to connect to other wireless networks other than my own. I prefer to leave my router configured as it is due to other users at home and the configs I use for them. I read about WICD if that is a possibility, but actually connecting wirelessly is not the issue.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 my Dell Inspiron 5100 with LAN adapter Edimax Ew-7711utn. It was working fine under 11.2, without using Network Manager. The old RT2870 driver was loaded and wpa_supplicant started at boot time. But it does not connect any more automatically with 11.3. The nl80211 almost universal driver seems to be missing, wpa_supplicant is not launched during the boot process, and no connection to the AP is therefore made. I have tried quickly NetworkManager but it is of no help in this case. There is still a long way to go to make it a reliable clever tool. So, back to the ifup method, I can only connect manually with this small script :

It works, but I am not happy at all to have to run this bad script, and would like to understand the origin of this regression, and why is nl80211 not found.
My computer takes a while to connect to my Linksys N router.
It used to connect in a snap of your finger automatically.
Now it does not.
Yes I have tried manual configuration, and double checking the password, ssid, protocols, and security type.
WPA2 personal is the security type.
There are maybe 4 different ways I know how to connect. The most annoying thing is when this box pops up saying to type in a password for the network connection.. and keeps popping up even when everything is right.
All I need is a reliable, easy, and automatic program to connect me to the internet, maybe even before I log into my system.
Linux Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition is my system. Brilliant system.
I've been wondering about how I can change settings on the notifications that show on the screen when a wireless connection is established, when I get new mail, etc. They look a lot like growl notifications from OSX, but clicking on them doesn't show me anything. I have a windows 7 desktop that is connected to the internet via wireless. The desktop then has an ethernet connection which is shared to the ubuntu server. The network looks like this.
Modem > Router > Desktop > Switch > Ubuntu Server My problem here is that there appears to be no connection from the server to the desktop. The server cannot connect to the internet.
When i ifconfig the ubuntu machine shows.eth0 link encap:Ethernetinet address: 192.168.137.2 Bcast:192.168.137.255 Mask 255.255.255.0 However on the windows desktop (the machine sharing the internet) these are the details for the connection to ubuntu server.ip 169.254.170.50 mask 255.255.255.0
is this a dhcp problem? is my server configured wrong?
connect to the Internet through my newly bought USB adapter, and it works just fine now... But - after boot I can't connect to the Internet before i open a terminal and type
either: sudo modprobe ndiswrapper - from the ndiswrapper-1.56 folder
or: sudo iwlist wlan0 scan - from the root
Both commands are some I learned during installation of the USB device - I don't know if any other commands would work;
It would be nice if my device connected automatically - is this possible?
I am running Debian Squeeze on my net book ( ASUS 1000PE ) with an Atheros wireless nic. It has been running fine for months automatically connecting during boot to my hidden network but all of a sudden no dice.
If I use the Gnome network manager and "connect to a hidden network" and I am all set but when I am at the command prompt ( which is how I have it set to boot to) it is a few more steps. How can I get it to automatically load. I did not have any scripts set up before so I assume it is a service I need to turn back on that was turned off in error.
I have configured a RaLink wireless card to connecto to an 802.1x network. I connect by selecting the network, and the i give the credentials(username/password). How do i configure Debian to automatically connect to this network when a session begins?

The main reason for this is because i havent got a monitor connected if for whatever reason the server restarts its hanging at the login screen and i cant login via vnc to the desktop. The furthest ive got is for it to say at the login screen next to the name (user logged in). Any Ideas on how to resolve this? or if it is possible?

I have been using VirtualBox for really long time, and personally I like it a lot, specially the screen resolution auto change to fit the window size. Lately I have moved to qemu/kvm for the sole reason to learn kvm, I have been missing different things from VirtualBox, but Am trying to stuck with It for now as I said just to learn It. Now to my question, Is there a way to get an automatic screen resolution change to fit the window size of the VM like what I get in VirtualBox?

View 14 Replies View RelatedA friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

I have a problem while rebooting my 9.10 server when I have SAN partition mounted. The message is something about the swap that can not be cleaned during the process. All works if I unmount the partitions before shutting down or rebooting.So I though to create a bash script that unmounts the parts during runlevel 0 and 6.I've created a simple script like this in /etc/init.d:

First off I'm running a headless Ubuntu server 10.10 box.I have a single folder on a ntfs drive that I wish to copy somewhere else on the same HD. I'd like this to automatically happen about once a week or so. It would be even better if it would tarball the copy also..but this isn't a 100% necessary.
Something like "XFOLDER" would be copied to "/backup/XFOLDER1.tar" then next time "/backup/XFOLDER2.tar" and so on.
For one project I use a web hosting service. I wanted the entire site to be https, so I bought a service from them in which they automatically install a trusted cert so people can access the site through https protocol. Since http is still available, though, I need to do automatic rewrites or something to change http into https requests. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to change the behavior of Network Manager, so that it will only automatically connect to certain wireless networks which I specify, and not automatically connect to others I may have previously used. For example, there are a lot of wifi networks called "linksys", and I don't want the program to automatically try to connect to whichever one it finds.If someone can tell me in which file(s) the list of these connections is stored, I might be able to write a script which will edit that list on startup.

I am using Fluxbox as a window manager, and sometimes not using X at all, so I need to be able to be connected to some pre-selected wireless networks without the assistance of Network Manager.
I remember I used to be able to do this in Debian by editing /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, but it seems it has been moved. wpasupplicant is installed on this system however, I tried to do an apt-get install and it said that it was already installed.
While I was installing Debian (testing), it asked for an external source for my wireless card firmware. As I didn't have a flash drive handy, I had to skip this step and do the setup through a wired network connection.
After the initial install. I manually installed the ipw2200 firmware (I have an Intel Pro/Set Wireless 2200bg card). It looks like this worked because I was getting a missing firmware error when I was booting up previously, and it went away after I did this. I be able to check with modprobe? I'm a bit rusty with this.
I checked my /etc/network/interfaces file and it does not look like my wireless card is in there, I see the loopback and the wired card eth0.
This is my ideal setup:
1. Attempt connecting to wired network (if present)
2. Attempt connecting to wireless networks in this order:
a. Home (WPA protected, hidden SSID)
b. Work (WEP protected)
c. Library (Open, No security)

I am running an Ubuntu Server on a VirtualBox VM running on my windows machine. So I've created a self-signed certificate using the following tutorial: [URL]
From this tutorial I'm left with 3 files:

server.crt
Then I found this very similar tutorial that has an extra bit on installing the certificates in apache: [URL] So I followed it's instructions which boil down to this:

So I'm thinking this should work now. However in Chrome I get: SSL connection error Unable to make a secure connection to the server. This may be a problem with the server, or it may be requiring a client authentication certificate that you don't have. Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): SSL protocol error. IE8 gives me a typical "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" Note that [URL] fails while [URL] works fine, so it's definitely something in my ssl setup I'm thinking.
My problem is exactly the same as [URL]
but I am stuck at the last hurdle
