Ubuntu :: Cannot Read In The 1/4 Second The Error Lasts On Screen Before The Grub Prompt

Jul 14, 2011

This morning I ran an upgrade which upgraded the kernel from 2.6.35-28 to 2.6.35-30 on my Maverick system. I then departed for a meeting and came back to discover that my system had rebooted itself and only booted into an initramfs prompt.

Rebooting again shows a very brief flashing message of "error: unknown filesystem" alongside a few other errors I cannot read in the 1/4 second the error lasts on screen before the grub prompt. Neither kernel boot nor recovery mode options take me anywhere except to the initramfs prompt. I have searched and found a few threads on similar issues, but they all involve different fixes and suggest causes (such as dual booting on an ntfs drive, which I do not do) such that I am unsure where to go from here.

Ubuntu Installation :: (initramfs) Prompt After Alternate CD 9.10 With RAID - Grub Loading: Biosdisk Read Error

Jan 13, 2010

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a nvidia board which, based on the forums I have perused, is a FAKERaid chipset. Originally I tried to install according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto to no avail. I gave up and am resorting to breaking down my raid setup (thus losing my Windows XP installation) and using Linux's software raid (which seems to be the recommended method) with the Alternate CD install.

I went in to the bios and completely disabled my board's RAID function. I then followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/SoftwareRAID , except it popped up with a window advising me "one or more serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices?" which that page didn't mention. I believe I selected "Yes". Setting up the partitions I made (from beginning of disk to end of disk) a RAID1 200MB /boot partition, a RAID0 / partition (90GB?), free space not set up in RAID (approx 20GB for each SATA drive to later install Windows on [if that's even possible]) & then the SWAP partition 2GB at the end of one of the disks (is it OK that this one wasn't in RAID?).

The installation completed, as far as I can tell, without a hitch. Except also of note: my network card doesn't work in the installer (gives an error message about unable to configure dhcp) so i'm not connected to the internet. Then I restart and the following appears: grub loading: error: biosdisk read error. Followed by what appears to be the Ubuntu loading splash (just a small white shape in the middle of the screen), and then:

I have tried to reinstall Ubuntu about 6 times now, complete installs. I have tried changing boot priority multiple times. I installed off a thumb drive and left the thumb drive in after install, took it out after install.

Is there any way I can make it last longer?

Software :: GRUB Read Error After Upgrade To Grub2?

Mar 19, 2010

I have a Debian Lenny box with two hard drives in it (no dual boot; /home and /var are on the second drive). This machine was working fine until earlier this week when I ran an upgrade and restarted it. I think during this upgrade Grub got upgraded to Grub2, and now when I try to reboot I just get this:

Code:

GRUB Read Error

Hitting Enter yields Operating System Not found. This is it, I can't get into the grub screen to enter the boot command or anything. I booted the machine into the rescue environment on the Install CD, and was able to mount all the file systems and chroot in. I tried reinstalling grub2, but this did not help. I ran fsck on my /boot file system, but it appears fine. The boot partition is also marked with a bootable flag in fdisk. I did try to downgrade back to grub1.5 which, while it didn't given an error did hang shortly after it loaded.

Fedora :: Can't Dual Booting With Grub (legacy) - Black Screen Grub Error 27

Jul 31, 2011

is it ever possible to do dual booting with grub(legacy) ever at all!. it is possible provided i take some pain, here is the link of that post [URL] i was coward and weak i didn't try that out then. but i did try it out. now so if u haven't seen the post .... I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)

so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)

completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27

Fedora :: GRUB Error 18 - Couldn't Read Configuration File

Apr 5, 2010

I'm playing with Fedora 12 and can't get GRUB to work. To boot, I've been using GRUB4DOS. While that works fine, I'd like to figure out what's wrong with regular GRUB 0.97. After the initial installation, GRUB came up on reboot, but it was broken -- it couldn't read the config file apparently, and no commands would work correctly. So I attempted to reinstall grub via the grub prompt. No matter what I do, or which hard disk I install GRUB on, I get "Error 18". I tried using the "grub-install" command as well as the prompt, and that did the same thing.

My system here is an ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO mo/bo. I've got four hard drives. Two 1TB SATA drives and a couple of PATA drives (300 and 500GB) on a Si608 controller card. Using the BIOS "BBS" boot menu, I can boot NTLDR and BOOTMGR off active partitions on any of the drives (with proper Boot.ini modifications to handle the change in drive order). GRUB4DOS works as well, and will boot Fedora 12 correctly off any of them (with proper menu.lst ministrations). But GRUB 0.97 that comes with Fedora just refuses to do anything other than say "Error 18".

Server :: GRUB Read Error After Adding SATA Drives?

Apr 2, 2010

I installed debian 5.0.4 server on a PC that has both IDE and SATA controllers. I used an IDE HD to install the OS. The input device was a USB DVD unit. The IDE drive showed as /dev/hda and the 4 SATA HDs showed as /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3 and /dev/sda4. After the OS was installed the reboot started which brought up an error: GRUB GRUB Read Error

I then disconnected the SATA HDs and rebooted successfully. So no PROBLEMS with just the IDE drive connected, grub works fine. If I reconnect the SATA HDs though grub fails with:

GRUB GRUB Read Error

The problem originated when the installation got to the GRUB implementation. Here the installer engine asked me If I wanted GRUB to be installed on the MBR, to which I said YES. The installer had listed the IDE drive (/dev/hda) before the SATA drives (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd). After the installation finished and the machine was restarted, BIOS looked at the SATA drives first could not find the grub stages and it displayed an "Read Error".

After realising what was happening I looked at the BIOS settings to see if the HD booting sequence could be altered. The BIOS did indeed list the 4 SATA drives first and the IDE HD last. BUT it would not let me alter the booting sequence. So I was stuck with what the BIOS doing. So I decided I take the IDE drive out and create a 20G partition on the first SATA to accommodate the OS. So now everything works OK.

Ubuntu :: Remove Grub 2 At Grub Rescue Prompt?

Jan 15, 2011

So I wanted to get rid of ubuntu 10.10 on my HP pavilion dv6 laptop as I wanted to make some hd space. Its a dual boot with windows 7. I deleted the ubuntu partition and expanded the windows partition to fill the whole hard drive again. When I restarted my laptop I got the "error: no such partition. Grub rescue>" message.

I tried inserting my ubuntu 10.10 boot cd but whenever I boot from the cd I get the exact same grub rescue error. Is it possible to remedy this situation from the error? I am currently unable to download a windows recovery cd so I'm stuck in the grub rescue page unless its possible to fix this mess from the error prompt.

Ubuntu :: Grub Prompt Appears After Update-grub?

However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?

Software :: Grub Drops To Grub Prompt On Boot / But Can Use Commands To Find Menu

Jun 5, 2009

I've got myself the curious situation where, when I boot the system, I can get grub to start, but it always drops to the prompt.

I can run:configfile /grub/menu.lst

and this brings up the menu with no problems, and from there I can boot the system to either linux or windows. What I don't understand is why it wont go to the menu in the first place? As far as I can tell, grub/Kubuntu got confused when installing, as each of the hd#,# settings in the menu.lst have needed tweaking to let the system boot. (e.g. windows is actually hd0, but the original install had it at hd2. Likewise linux is on hd1, but the menu.lst had it at hd0). I've happily tweaked these to make the system boot, but would appreciate any help in convincing grub to actually load the menu without me having to use the prompt.

CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?

Mar 21, 2011

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.

When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img

Programming :: Cannot Prompt User In While-read

I'm facing a problem in a - at least I though it would be - simple BASH script. I use 'awk' to find matching lines in a file, and then use while-read to modify each line matching the expr casted in awk. It looks like this:

Code:

function foo() {
awk '$NF~/^./{print $NF}' FILE.TXT|while read line; do
bla bla bla ...

[code]....

However, each time the execution hits the 'read choice' line, it doesn't prompt - as well as pause the excution - the user for a choice: it just passes it. This problem just happens inside the while loop.

Debian Installation :: "GRUB Read Error Operating System Not Found" In Old Hardware

Apr 1, 2011

I am trying to install debian 6.0.1a in an old COMPAQ 1255 (amd-k6, 160 MB ram, 4.3 Gbyte AT33.33 MB/s Cyl 6568 Heads 6 bytes per sector 512 HardDisk). I am using the netinstall CD_ROM , I just want the base system (the last option in the list you are presented) I got installed debian 5.0.8 , base package plus fluxbox plus a light browser plus a light pdfviewer, and I got really surprised what an useful system I got from such and old hardware.

With 6.0.1a everything goes well during the install process, the net is recognized, also the disk, formatting an partitions are created, apt-get configured, repositories contacted, etc. I only select base system (may be I am confused with the name, it is the last option in the list), and I select the install using the whole hard disk (i also tryed the install using a separated home partition but I had the same problem). I am installing the system in spanish, using latinamerican keyboard layout.

the installer then asks to take away the CD-ROM, I do, I reboot and then I got "GRUB Read Error Operating System not found". Just before the message, the machine search the floppy. If I press a key, I got the same behaviour, noise in the floppy, error message.

I can boot the CD_ROM in rescue mode, and I can select /dev/hda1 and get a console. i can do ls and cd and navigate the tree. It looks like everything is there, the /etc, the /home, all of the directories. if I do fdisk /dev/hda i got a warning because dos compatible mode is deprecated with option p of fdisk i got:

15 heads, 63 sectors/track 8944 cylinders. (different of the specifications?)
device boot Id system
/dev/hda1 * 83 Linux

[code].....

i can do less grub.cfg, and I got lot of information. I think this part could be relevant to the problem

insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid

After restart: the GRUB screen hangs at "Loading stage 1.5" for ages before issuing Error 25. Try a restart. Same thing. And again. Fedora Installation :: Boot Prompt Information Read Automatically From Isolinux.cfg Without User Intervention?

Oct 4, 2009

building an install cd or dvd media that will automatically install the Linux software on a client pc.
