I do regular updation of my system. Today, I have updated my ubuntu system, but after booting I am getting only grub> command prompt. I am not able to see my main login screen.
- I am using 11.04.
- I have ubuntu 10.04 cd.
I was dual-booting Ubuntu 11.04 just fine for about the last week but then ran into some issues and decided to reinstall Ubuntu. Now after the install I get this error: error: nu such device: d38af2a9-740e-4d3c-b267-2a3848e5d319 and it goes into the grub rescue command prompt screen. I have tried to reinstall Ubuntu about 6 times now, complete installs. I have tried changing boot priority multiple times. I installed off a thumb drive and left the thumb drive in after install, took it out after install.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was deleting some space off my C Drive and I believe I may of accidentally deleted Fedora, or some of it! I have a dual boot with Fedora and Windows XP so when I started my desktop up it would load into fedora by default or I could press a key to load XP! (It rhymes!) Now, however, it instantly loads up into "Grub"
And that's it! Run, Or Exit, or anything really, doesn't work! Except Reboot! So I'm a little stuck. It's an old PC and the Windows XP disc is long gone, if I ever had one! I had this thought that perhaps if I reinstall Fedora from a CD it many bring back the old command prompt and let me get back into XP again? Or, is that crazy talk??
Is there any commands I can type in gnu grub to wipe or format my harddrive

I remember having it a while ago before I had to go to windows, and now that I am going back to Linux I would LOVE to have this screen back! I enclosed a screen shot picture. When I type Code: screen -R -DD as usual, I get into screen but there is no command prompt. There is a cursor and I can type commands which work, eg ls. However I don't know which directory I am in, so it makes using it rather hard.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis morning I ran an upgrade which upgraded the kernel from 2.6.35-28 to 2.6.35-30 on my Maverick system. I then departed for a meeting and came back to discover that my system had rebooted itself and only booted into an initramfs prompt.
Rebooting again shows a very brief flashing message of "error: unknown filesystem" alongside a few other errors I cannot read in the 1/4 second the error lasts on screen before the grub prompt. Neither kernel boot nor recovery mode options take me anywhere except to the initramfs prompt. I have searched and found a few threads on similar issues, but they all involve different fixes and suggest causes (such as dual booting on an ntfs drive, which I do not do) such that I am unsure where to go from here.
my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.

with that said i burned fedora 8, 10, and 11 checked the sha1 verified everything was fine i had originally installed fedora 8 on an old pc i had from windows XP without any problems messed with it some, upgraded to 10 again no problems. tired to update 11 got a message about ext3 not found ext4 not found, re installed 10 the loader loads up now i have a blank screen with a cursor it the left hand corner
again i had 10 installed fine prior to all this can any one point me in the right direction to solve this issue or am i way over my head trying to figure this stuff out. i have spent 3 days searching these forums.
i'm just not quite sure what i need to do. oh, i tried to install 8 again and it wouldn't take either. i think the 10 problem has something to do with the graphic driver it's a geforce 7400 nvidia and something to do with the grub, but like i said i get a blinking cursor and not quite sure how to access the grub or command line.

Ok basically, ive been trying distro's by installing them on my linux HD, my favourite is ubuntu, but i wanted to see what else is out there so i tried out OpenSUSE, and with suse i unfortantly came across many problems with grub-legacy, and i solved that eventually by changing my boot hard disk in BIOS to the seagate, and installing grub on that Ive never had a grub issue in the past using ubuntu, only with suse Then i decided to go back to ubuntu because everything just works and i like .deb packages, so i installed 10.10 32Bit
Everything went fine, chose default install options, formatted the Seagate drive, and installed to the seagate, HD changedt the boot drive to the western digital in BIOS ( were ubuntu likes to install grub in the past ) booted fine, installed fine, grub showed fine, booted to linux then i went back to windows for a day of gaming and fun, i just rebooted about 30 minutes ago to play with linux, and i cant access the grub menu my pc goes to the POST screen and then were grub should show, i get a blank screen and the pc just reboots to the POST constantly this problem has never happened with ubuntu, ive had 10.10 before, this is all started after removing opensuse
ive tried F8 and booting from both drives, the seagate i just get a white underline for ages and nothing happens and i cant boot to windows on the WD Im currently on my livecd im using the 11.04 livecd, all my cds arent labelled, so i have no idea which is which, i just chucked one in to get a browser, but i gotta say natty 11.04 IS AWSOME
Have win 7 on one drive and ubuntu on 2nd drive then son goes and deletes partition that Ubi was in ,now cannot access any system all i get is grub rescue on screen and i cannot boot with any thing taking a guess the grub bootloader has died and made a mess of the windows bootloader.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 (using Update Manager) in an attempt to get to 10.04. Installation and upgrade seemed to go OK until reboot. Now I only get a black screen - I don't see the grub menu, I don't even see any way to access the BIOS menu- not even a blinking cursor. I can hear it start and I can see the numlocks key go on. Ctrl-Alt-PrtScrn-B does not reboot (nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace- but I didn't expect that would) Surprisingly Ctrl-Alt-Del does (or at least it sounds like it does) reboot the system. I do have a NVIDIA cards and after reading around I suspect that this is likely the problem but I have no idea what to do now..
Here's what I've attempted:
I figured since I wanted to get to 10.04 anyway and this was so troublesome I could just go do a fresh install with a Live CD or USB to 10.04. However, even with a live CD or USB I still just get a blank screen.
Continually holding down F2 (and other function keys to try to access Bios)
Holding down Shift while booting
Esc while booting
Moving the monitor to the VGA port (as opposed to the NVIDIA card).
Other information...
Previously I had tried to upgrade to 9.10, but ran into problems with it not recognizing my RAID, so I just found it easier to go back to 9.04. (So although this is likely a graphics problem I guess the possibility is that now it doesn't even see my boot drive- although- if that was the case, I'd assume I wouldn't have the same problems from the CD or USB boot.) My ultimate goal is to get this to 10.04, if I could do it with an upgrade instead of a fresh install I'd prefer that, but at this point just getting back to a functioning computer would be ideal. I see many options in other posts for how to get back once you can access a command line- but since I can't even see that, I'm not sure what to do now.
So I wanted to get rid of ubuntu 10.10 on my HP pavilion dv6 laptop as I wanted to make some hd space. Its a dual boot with windows 7. I deleted the ubuntu partition and expanded the windows partition to fill the whole hard drive again. When I restarted my laptop I got the "error: no such partition. Grub rescue>" message.
I tried inserting my ubuntu 10.10 boot cd but whenever I boot from the cd I get the exact same grub rescue error. Is it possible to remedy this situation from the error? I am currently unable to download a windows recovery cd so I'm stuck in the grub rescue page unless its possible to fix this mess from the error prompt.
After certain system-wide changes, like kernels updates, I obtain grub prompt on restart. However, if I put the hard drive into another computer (b), it boots up fine. Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got myself the curious situation where, when I boot the system, I can get grub to start, but it always drops to the prompt.
I can run:configfile /grub/menu.lst
and this brings up the menu with no problems, and from there I can boot the system to either linux or windows. What I don't understand is why it wont go to the menu in the first place?As far as I can tell, grub/Kubuntu got confused when installing, as each of the hd#,# settings in the menu.lst have needed tweaking to let the system boot. (e.g. windows is actually hd0, but the original install had it at hd2. Likewise linux is on hd1, but the menu.lst had it at hd0). I've happily tweaked these to make the system boot, but would appreciate any help in convincing grub to actually load the menu without me having to use the prompt.
I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot

I just went out and bought a 19" flat screen LCD monitor. Plugged it in and it is not working correctly. When I start the computer the bios info will show up on the screen, then it goes to the screen that let's you choose an O/S if you were to dual boot. After clicking "enter" it will show the first line of the boot then it goes off into horizontal colors then goes black. I have search many different posts and googled but nothing is giving me a hint at this.I changed the xorg.conf to match the refresh rates to match the monitor but that did not work, and did not really think it would considering the point this monitor goes out on me. running: 2.6.27.7-smp 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller:

I have 2 hard drives, 1 with Windows 7, and one with Ubuntu.
Before installing Ubuntu I had PCLinuxOS then I got a book on learning Linux that is Ubuntu specific so I formatted it and installed Ubuntu 9.
My problem is:
When I boot up I get a WINDOWS bootloader first that lists:
Windows 7
Ubuntu
Then when I click Ubuntu I get the GRUB bootloader.
I've tried reinstalling Grub. I've also tried SuperGrub but none of the options worked, most returned error 15.
So I want ONLY GRUB to show up when booting. From there I think I can edit the grub file to set a timeout of 3-5 seconds, with Windows 7 as DEFAULT boot (Do I need to type "setactive" under my Windows 7 entry to do this part?)
I tried looking all over but all i can find is people using Grub and not answering the question and i dont want to use Grub as the main one. Once the computer starts it going into Grub then i cacn chose between Ubuntu or Windows 7. I want it so i loads the Windows 7 boot loader first then i can chose Ubuntu or Windows 7. After i chose Ubuntu then it loads Grub.Example:I want to do it like it does it with Wubi but dont want to use Wubi

I have been trying ubantu 9.10 via dual boot (with windows XP) for a while now. Today I decided to wipe out windows and install ubantu only. After I completed the install I get GRUB prompt and I cannot type anything. So I booted from CD again and opened ubantu from disk. ran the boot_info_script as mentioned on other posts here and here is the results
