View 1 RepliesI can ping certain websites, such as Adobe.com, but I cannot access them via http (i.e. through firefox or yum). Some websites work through http, like Google, while others don't. The ones that don't are always the same.
What really hurts here is I cannot yum to all repos i'd like to. Since the same sites cannot be accessed through firefox, I imagine there is some underlying problem with my system's HTTP setup.
My windows machine on the same network works fine. I have had this problem since I installed Fedora 10 about 4 months ago. I'd rather not reinstall as nothing really seems broken (aside from this http issue), my system is completely up to date.
If I use a public proxy website I can get to the sites I can't connect to directly. I've followed a FAQ from mozilla for Firefox that hasn't helped, but I don't think its a Firefox issue since yum suffers as well. I also followed the fedora FAQ and I have been using OpenDNS servers.
I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection
Im having trouble using my wireless usb dongle. I've installed the software and connected to the web, but i can only access a number of websites.
I can access ....., and watch vids and perform searches on google, bing, yahoo and the like. However when i try and access a site that i have searched for it takes me to the internet providers homescreen and tells me to activate my account or top up my account.
I know i have enough GB left as i recently activated my account and i'm able to use the wireless stick on another computer without any problems on all websites. So this leads me to believe that there is maybe a problem with my browser or security settings, but im not sure what to do.

after googling around,i find the 'tips' did not work at all, e.g.
i typed "insmod ipv6",but the shell responded "no such file or directory". What should i do ,was it so hard ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedStrangest thing...yesterday my 11.04 box lost the ability to access anything external. I can ssh to the box from outside my network, and all other boxes on my network are fine, but this one box can't hit anything external. If I attempt to ping a site it's doing the same resolution, but no packets are delivered.
Up until yesterday it was running fine, and I didn't make any changes to my home network or install any updates. Totally stumped.
Edit: this is a wired connection with a static internal IP.

Some sites (particularly https) take very long time to load . Sometimes I get "Page is taking a long time to load . Reload the page later" message.
Now , this is happening for some http webpages also.
This is not a problem with browser.
I have firefox , chrome , chromium and konqueror installed.
Also I can access all these sites properly from windows so it is not problem with my internet connection either.

I cannot install software using "yum" but I can with the GUI program "Add/Remove Software".
For example, I tried:

However, what's puzzling is that I could install some certain packages although I still see the same kind of error messages.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIn the past week or so I've noticed some weird network behaviour. I find accessing some sites such as Amazon, Paypal, and Bigstockphoto really slow. Sometimes the page will not load at all. Other sites are fine. The problem sites are not a problem for others on my LAN at home. When I try to open the problem sites, I can see in Firestarter blocked connections coming from 2.1(8/9).xxx.xxx on various ports such as 36007. This only happens for the problem sites. I attached a typical output from firestarter.
This happens with Firfeox or Chrome. Using Ubuntu 10.10
In ubuntu 10.04 LTS I am currently unable to access the location http://192.168.1.1 I have accessed it earlier. This is necessary for modem configuration. I am at a loss why this is inaccessible at present. Can anybody please advise what to do? I am configuring firewall but I doubt if that has anything to do with my problem. Or in case this may be due to faulty firewall configuration, please indicate denial of possible service/program which may cause this. Also ping 192.168.1.1 reports 100% packet loss.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking about some ways to limit access to my web-server. It runs Nginx and php in FCGI. The server contains a large amount of information. The data is freely available and no authentication is required but other companies might like to mirror it and use on their own servers.
The requests could be limited on different levels: IP, TCP, HTTP (by nginx) or by the php application. I found some solutions (like Nginx's limit_req_zone directive), but they do not solve the second part of the problem: there's no way to define a whitelist of clients who are allowed to use the data.
I thought about an intellectual firewall that would limit the requests on IP basis, but I'm yet to find such device. Another way was to hack some scripts that would parse the log file every minute and modify the iptables to ban suspicious IPs. It would take days and I doubt this system will survive, say, 1000 requests per second.
Perhaps, some HTTP proxy, like Squid, could do this?
I already installed apache 2 & php 5 .. but I don't know where I create .php pages so I can access them using http://localhost

Effectively I need to redirect a custom string from our http response into the apache access logs. When a user navigates to our site they receive a "dye" number that is associated with them. This number follows them to whatever cluster they are directed too. The string is formatted as such, com-company-dye: d0a2#6dfce. I need that that header dye to appear in the access logs so we can use that dye number as a key for troubleshooting issues though out our various monitoring systems.

My server is installed on a guest OS on vmware. It really bugs me because I can't access it from the host OS's browser even though there is no discrepancy between /etc/hosts, /etc/sysconfig/network, httpd.conf files. Issuing ifconfig command also returns the same IP. I have also enabled netwroking in the vmware settings. And I can ping the guest OS's IP from the host.

I've got two routers, 10.0.0.0/23 and 192.168.2.0/24, which are joined by a Linux box with interfaces eth0 (10.0.0.2) and ra0 (192.168.2.2). I've got masquerading for ra0, and a route to 192.168.2.0/24 on 10.0.0.0's router. I CAN ping hosts on 192.168.2.0 from 10.0.0.0 just fine, but I CANNOT access web pages.Strangely, If I enable masquerading on eth0, and add a route to 192.168.2.0s router to 10.0.0.0, I can ping AND access web pages from 192.168.2.0Here is my current iptables

Problems with launching data files of the nas and saving to them is a kde problem. The dot desktop files have to contain access rights for smb/http etc and even when given these it still will not work. I have mainly concentrated on getting the VLC video player to work as it is capable of playing from just about any source, comes with codecs etc etc. Amazing package really.
Pure K apps such as kwrite at least work fine. I tried setting up samba but to no avail.
As dropping a file into VLC's focus didn't do anything I created a vlc desktop icon and dragged the nas file onto that. It plays and a kde error message pops up from plasma shell - can't find file!
I enable kde automount. The content of that when it starts is disturbing. It shows my system disks a detachable and not attached! No need to worry though. I selected mount on log in and attachment where the server was shown. VLC still wouldn't work.
Next I enable NFS file transfers on the NAS. This has allowed me to use open with directly onto an avi file on the nas. I can also click launch them. Remaining problem is opening files on the nas from within VLC. Up pops the kde message "you can only select local files". The file manager here seems to be an instance of dolphin. This suggest that there is going to be a problem saving files to the nas as well. Looks to be the case. VLC can convert formats and all sorts of things. If I select a file locally and try and convert it and save to the nas up pops the "you can only select local files" as soon as I select ok having set the path and file name.
Strange thing is that working transfers seem to be using CIF even though it took an NFS enable to get it partly working via KDE's automount. Dolphin only allows a CIF set up which has a distinct advantage as a direct ip address can be entered. The automount has introduced a very very long delay before kde is up and running following a log in. Samba is even worse in this respect and both seem to lack a method of direct ip input which means they have to find the server.
One other aspect. As far as NFS is concerned from a very recent post elsewhere nautilus works. Pass on CIF. And of course it's all instantaneous and ok on windows even on vista. Enabling the TV protocol on the nas has confused Vista as it only wants to connect like that and needs drivers. Might also be down to having NFS enabled though. MS might not like that.
I have filed all of this on bugzilla if anyone would like to vote - bug number 695648. Seems to me that the CIFs route should be the default for ease with many users on home networks. I'm also sure that the problem is basically KDE preventing aps from accessing the nas.
I need to install a program by using the address http://255.255.255.255. However, when I type this address in my browser, I get the following error: "Failed to connect. Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 255.255.255.255. Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection." Is there an easy way to put this site into the air?

This machine has a tightened security policy with the httpd_unified turned off, this requires explicit labeling of all files. If a file is a cgi script it needs to be labeled with httpd_TYPE_script_exec_t in order to be executed. If it is read-only content, it needs to be labeled httpd_TYPE_content_t, it is writable content. it needs to be labeled httpd_TYPE_script_rw_t or httpd_TYPE_script_ra_t. You can use the chcon command to change these contexts. Please refer to the man page "man httpd_selinux" or FAQ [URL] "TYPE" refers to one of "sys", "user" or "staff" or potentially other script types.
