I've been running Ubuntu on my laptop for a couple months now and I've been using compiz settings manager. For some reason I can't seem to get the window effects for minimizing, closing, etc. to work. I have followed a few tutorials and nothing seems to make any difference. As far as I can tell, that is the only thing in compiz that is not working. I am running Ubuntu 10.10

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was hoping someone could tell me how to turn off the basic windows effects in compiz but keep it turned on so I can use something like Docky.
The reason is because nautilus takes a few painful seconds to open up with the effects turned on and some times I end up clicking a folder etc a second time thinking it hasn't opened.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 as a guest on virtual box installed on windows 7. I have installed gtk-recordmydesktop(rmd) using synaptic package manager. rmd do not recognize any window when I use the 'extra' visual effects i.e. compiz effects.

When I turn off compiz effects, theme selection works as a charm, but when I turn compiz effects on again, I get back to human-clearlooks. In Appearance Preferences -> Theme I can still see Ambiance is selected, but window controls are from human-clearlooks. Every theme changes only colors, icons, fonts etc, but window controls remain. And remain on the right side of window. Everything works as expected when I turn off compiz effects.
In CompizConfig Settings Manager -> Effects -> Window Decoration Command is specified to /usr/bin/compiz-decorator What can I do to have buttons of the left side? I tried to change in gconf-editor in apps -> metacity -> general -> button_layout to "close,minimize,maximize:menu", but it still has no effect on compiz
I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.
I had a friend load Ubuntu on my PC. Everything work pretty well except i cant use the effects like rain, fire, wobbly window or drag my window into another one of my desktop. My comp has Radeon HD3100 Graphics card in it. Is there any graphics drivers I can dl to make the stuff work.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

Also when i place my mouse on the top right of the screen it brings it to a choosing window type mode where you can pick which window you would like to open, is it possible to get this on the top left of the screen instead? So far so good on the compiz effects but I couldn't figure out the fire effect when you close a window in compiz.

X just freezes whenever I close a window, I have to kill X when that happens. For some reason it doesn't do that in TWM, though.
I am using CentOS5.2 and gnome 2.16, sometimes (not very often) when I open something and close it by clicking the CROSS on the top-right corner. The application crash and I lose all control (no keyboard anymore), I have to reboot the system by reset the machine. What's going on?
Yesterday, when I logon as root and run service setup, after I uncheck a sevice in the list and then start it, I click the CROSS on the top-right corner of the window, it popup a window (in the background) to ask me to save it or not, but then I total lose the control, no mouse, no keyboard. I try to reset the machine many times, but everytime when I repeat the same operation, it crash again. Seems that if I don't close it, everything would be fine!!!!

I was wondering if there is some way to "lock" that window, so that accidental closing of that window is prevented.
I'm on a Sabayon Linux install, and the Sabayon forums and stuff have NO idea what I'm talking about and keep giving me "facepalms"
So in Ubuntu I could enable desktop effects and simply use my metacity themes.
In Sabayon, when I enable Compiz, it changes my window theme manager to Emerald. I want to use metacity, not Emerald. They kept telling me it wasn't possible when I used Compiz effects and Metacity together all the time.
I've been running an emerald theme in compiz for few months now and everything was running fine when a couple days ago VLC started acting weird and playing little static clicks every few seconds. Then the next time I booted up after an initial second of flashing my full desktop the screen blanked off a section on the left and bottom of my screen. When I logged in docky told me it was having trouble with the compositing, but when I scrolled over the spot where my docks are they were there. My arrow can be seen in the black areas as can the start panel when I scroll over it, but aside from that it is black and when I open I window the blackness covers it in that part. None of my compiz effects seem to be working.
I am running a pretty basic motherboard and I know basically nothing about this kind of thing but I looked up the built in integrated video card online : ATI Radeon - HD3000 Graphics, On Board Graphic Max. Memory Share Up to 512 MB. I have an ATI driver installed but when I look at my drivers it says it is installed but not currently in use. When I look at my visual effects page it is on none, so I tried changing it to normal and it says the effects can't be enabled. I am running a dual boot with windows and when I go into windows there doesn't seem to be any problems. I am running a Biostar A760G M2+, an AMD AthlonII x4 and running Ubuntu 10.04.
Still new to Ubuntu, and I've installed it on my laptop tonight (Alienware M11x, Ubuntu 11.04). if I hit F11 then push the mouse off the top of the screen the whole window moves up and I can see minimize/maximixe/close then.
So I was messing around on my laptop this morning and I noticed that my desktop effects were turned off. So i decided to turn them on but as soon as i pressed the "normal" option a pop up opens up and says "searching for drivers" then the screen flickers and finally it tells me "desktop effects cannot be enabled". Also my compizconfig wasn't functioning. for exmaple: I turn on wobble windows and nothing happens. No wobble windows.

First windows lost borders, so I reset X (ctrl+backspace) and since then, effects went to hell.
I've reinstalled nVidia drivers. All went fine, but desktop effect still disappeared.

A friend whom I turned on to Ubuntu with 9.10 recently connected a projector to watch a movie off her laptop. When it was connected, the laptop screen changed and it was clear that desktop effects through compiz were disabled. Thing is, since disconnecting the projector, I cannot get the effects back.If I go into Preferences - Appearance and click to enable Normal or Extra Visual Effects, the same thing happens. I.e. I get a popup saying Searching for hardware driver...and after about 20 seconds, the screen flashes a bit, and says
Desktop effects could not be enabled. Not sure why it's searching for a hardware driver. The computer doesn't require any 3rd party hardware drivers to be enabled - it doesn't have an nVidia card or anything like that.If it makes a difference, she yanked the VGA cord out without setting the display mode back to just her laptop with the FN and F key combo.I've tried:
-Reinstalling compiz
-Tinkering with options under Preferences - Display
-Ensuring that nothing is available under Preferences - Hardware Drivers
I have installed Lucid on my old T61p. And I am using the NVidia driver Nouveau. But I cannot work out how to enable compiz with it. Is it possible to have composite effects with this driver?

When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".
Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.
I havent used Ubuntu in a while, so I get version 10.04.1 and when I get compiz, I am missing lots of compiz effects. Like fire, 3d windows, changing how many side are on dektop cube. The skybox doesnt rotate with the cube, when it should.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a bash script and I'm dropping a file on script launcher shortcut. Everything seems fine, only that after executing the script console window closes, so I can't see if some messages were produced during execution.
As I just recently switched from Windows, this kind of problem is solved there by adding 'pause' command in batch script, on which user has to press key and script will then continue (finish) or by launching through 'cmd /k' which makes console window persistent.
Googling I found about 'sleep' command and more appropriate for me 'read' command, so I did this:
Unfortunately, I can't see any effect of 'read' command as console windows again terminates after execution. Execution is successful BTW. So what's the catch?
KDE tends to freeze momentarily after performing some tasks, like closing a window, pressing a button that should result in an option pane being popped, or simply trying to drag a window around the desktop. It doesn't happen every single time, but it's very persistently. I first noticed that the mouse would freeze sometimes when I do something like close a window and it takes 3~4 seconds for me to get control back, and for the task that I requested (close a window for instance) to be carried out.
During this time, I notice that all of KDE freezes up because my binary clock widget freezes as well. Is this a known problem with KDE? Can somebody give me some advice as to what might be causing this behaviour? I recall having similar problems back when I first tried 11.0, but back then it was so bad that I ended up going with Gnome. Now KDE has me hooked again, except for this one niggling issue. If I can get this resolved, then I think I will finally have an absolutely stable linux desktop.

So I have these three bars that I suppose are some kind of left over fragment of windows I had up the last time I rebooted. Anyhow, whenever I boot now, these three bars show on my desktop, and I cant get rid of them, they dont have the minimize, maximize or close buttons. Yet when I click the, "show desktop" buttom, they then minimize. HOwever, they don't show up on my window list. I've tried restarting my xsession and that didnt work, I've restarted nautilus that didn't work, I cant right click on them, I already tried xkill and force quite and that doesnt work. They're just always there.
