Ubuntu :: Firefox Window Not Drag Able With "File" Bar
May 11, 2010
I'm using the Default Lucid Ambiance theme. What I noticed, and am quite delighted by this fact, is that windows are draggable not only by their titlebar, but the whole area which is black (which means the "File, Edit, etc." menu is draggable as well) I noticed this behavior in all apps (ex. Synaptic, Evolution) except Firefox. If I want to drag its window, I have to click directly on the titlebar, which is the top half of the black area. I find it confusing.

I'm trying to manipulate the existing windows from within a python script similar to the BASH wmctrl. I've got the basics down with PyWnck, but I need to be able to tell when a window is actively being dragged (or just when the title bar is being clicked). I doubt this is a wnck function. direction of the right python package?

Yesterday I adjusted the position of the windows controls back to what it was before, by using the configuration editor to set apps / metacity / general / button layout to "menu:minimize, maximize, close". At the time everything seemed good, the buttons moved, and it all worked. This morning I rebooted back into Lucid Lynx Ubuntu 64 bit, and now I find there are no controls on the windows, and I cannot even click and drag them, or double click the title bar to maximize! I checked, and the string I altered is still the same. I can still move windows with Alt-F7 and the mouse, and can resize by dragging out the bottom right corner.

Since I installed Lucid I have found that when I drag a window to the top of the screen in KDE, unless I do so very carefully and gently, it maximises and fills the screen. How do I stop this pointless and annoying behaviour?

How would you make a window drag'n'drop? I have hidden the title bar using:
Code: self.window.set_decorated(False)
But I still want this window to be moveable, by clicking and dragging anywhere within the window. I would rather just use pyGTK, but Xlib is fine with me as well.

Is there a way to disable window drag from within the window? I mean, I want the window to be movable only from the title bar. But now even if you drag the window from the content, the drag action is fired.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome 2.30.2 desktop environment. When I drag a window it only shows the outline of the window while doing that. How can I change the settings so that not just the outline but the whole window still shows while I'm dragging it.
Also feel free to give me any tips on making my desktop look cool

Since I have upgraded to to 10.10, I've noticed that I can no longer drag programs to another desktop. Somehow this setting must have been disabled. How does one reactive this setting? (I'm guessing its Compiz related...)

I am trying to stop my left click from moving the window. This is not Meta + Left click but just simple Left click in the area marked with blue. It happens if I Left click drag on the Titlebar as well. I have tried setting 'Nothing' for Meta + Left click setting shown in the image but the behaviour continues.
Is this a bug or can I stop this somehow ?

I'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've been messing around with customizing my desktop/UI over the past week or so and I must have messed something up. After I got sick of how slow Wallpapoz was to change backgrounds between workspaces (I'm using GNOME) I turned on the Wallpaper plugin in Compiz and turned off the nautilus desktop. That worked great for the backgrounds but now whenever I try to drag windows around the cursor shudders and shakes and the wondows won't move smoothly. I eventually get them to where I want them to go but it's very annoying.
So far, I have re-enabled the nautilus desktop and reinstalled nautilus with synaptic, neither of which did anything.

I'm an old-school dinosaur, and I'd like to understand how drag and drop works on the X window system under Linux. Is it build into the X protocol? Is it a function of the window manager? Do applications have to be aware of drag and drop? Is it both the applications and the window manager?I'm looking for a general technical understanding. If I have specific questions about how to modify an app to support drag and drop, I'll ask them over on Stackoverflow.

On Windows, I can drop file on batch script file, then dropped file is accepted as script parameter and script is automatically executed. Trying the same in Nautilus it seems like not possible. Is there some other way of using this approach in Debian?I hope it's clear what I'm after - I don't want to write Nautilus scripts as workaround and want to avoid: - opening terminal - cd to bash script - type script name andmeter file then executeinstead I would like already mentioned, drop filename expected as parameter to bash script, and then script to execute automatically.

I have an 500GB Iomega external drive connected to my iMac and used for the Mac Time Machine back-ups. I want to put a small partition on there that I can use to back-up my Ubuntu files which are on my laptop. I thought that I would be able to just copy the entire Home file on Ubuntu to this drive be drag and drop but this does not work. I get a notice to inform me that I do not have permission to create file there. I can however move files in the other direction (from the external drive to Ubuntu on the laptop. I assume this is because the external drive was formatted for Mac and I hope the problem will be solved if I could format a part of the drive in ext4 to accommodate the linux files.

My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.

After upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).
I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.
I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.

I like to alias my firefox commands so I can open up mutiple pages at once. This works great. firefox [URL]
But if I have firefox already up and running it will open as tabs of the firefox I already have running. How can I open the multiple pages in a new window in this case?
- Using -no-remote could work, but I would have to make a whole different firefox profile for each set of pages, not really a solution. - Also tried setting it to a particular display and it opened as a tab again. ie. firefox [URL] -display=":0.0"

For the last year I was using the version of Firefox that came with 32-bit Karmic Koala. Recently I installed 64-bit Maverick. Meerkat, so I'm now using Firefox 3.6.10. Previously, when first opening Firefox, the window aligned to the left edge of the screen. Now it is centered. The window dimensions are correctly retained between sessions, but not the position. Can I get it to open at the left again?
