May 31, 2011Can "wobbly windows" and other desktop effects be utilized, or did that all go away in f15 and gnome 3? i successfully enabled nvidia graphic driver.

Mar 31, 2010I had a friend load Ubuntu on my PC. Everything work pretty well except i cant use the effects like rain, fire, wobbly window or drag my window into another one of my desktop. My comp has Radeon HD3100 Graphics card in it. Is there any graphics drivers I can dl to make the stuff work.

Aug 26, 2010im using the ubuntu distro and when i goto the visual effects tab and click on normal or extra, it says "desktop effects could not be enabled" also, i have Two hdd's, a 100GB that has windows 7 and ubuntu. and a 250GB that has Windows XP. GRUB didnt notice windows xp though, so its not a boot option.

May 11, 2011Just installed 11.4 love the the look and layout moving from ubuntu and windows vista ultimate..Got everything installed ok BUT? Got red x were network interfaces were at. Worked fine on the live cd run, but on the install its red x there?/?? Funny thing is i still have internet access.What do i need to do to set this up right used to debian ways not rpm? May 5, 2010I was tweakng the desktop effects in kubuntu and adjusted the stiffness slidder to max out wabbly windows so I could compare it to more stiffer option. It is only supposed to wobble when the window is moved but as soon as I hit the apply button the window started wobbling all over the place! So fast, that I can barely tell what window it is! It is impossible for me to open any windows without them flickering all over the place. I will not be able to fix this inside KDE.
Does anyone know of a command-line option to turn desktop effects off? Is there a desktop configuration file somewere I can edit w/ nano? I am having to write this on windows7 because I can't use any windows in linux.
Ubuntu :: Natty - Gnome And Wobbly Windows
Jun 7, 2011Upgraded to 11.04, tried Unity for a month but hated it, reverted back to Gnome today, now I have no wobbly windows.
I've enabled WW in CCSM and all the settings are defaulted. I've tried removing all traces of Unity using synaptic, but it just doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I've read a few threads about this, but so far haven't seen a fix other than "it just started working", so any pointers or ideas would be great as it hasn't just started working for me.
Dell Latitude D620 with current nVidia proprietary driver installed.

Jul 9, 2011Not too happy with Ubuntu's venture into 'unity' so intend to give debian a 'test drive'.Re some eye candy, compiz-config settings manager enables numerous attractive settings but it doesn't seem to work on my machine.On Ubuntu wobbly windows and desktop cube works fine but not as it stands with my debian setup.Under Preferences-appearance debian has 3 tabs, Ubuntu has an extra tab which I think may be the key.Is there something extra I need to install on debian to get my 'wobbly windows'.

Sep 15, 2010In order to correct bug #459647 in compiz (as I have done on 2 other PCs) I downloaded, modified, and compiled the source with apt-src and make. Then I installed the produced .deb files with dpkg -i. For whatever reason the new compiz didn't have wobbly windows nor could I switch workspaces. Compiz is running and I do know however that compositing is working as Docky is still functional (and doesn't really work without compositing).
So I uninstalled all of the compiz packages and reinstalled the versions from the official repository. The same issue remained. During this time I have restarted my computer several times with different configurations. I tried to install compiz packages from the [URL]...ubuntu PPA and still the same problems exist. I'm not sure if there are any other problems that I haven't noticed yet. Finally, in an attempt to fully purge my computer of all things compiz and start over, I got the following error:

I'm not sure what "compiz-code" is, but that's the name of the folder that I downloaded the source into. After this command, no packages are removed. I'm currently running Lucid 10.4.1 with all the latest updates. My graphics card is an Intel 945M mobile chipset. I run a similar configuration on 2 other computers with no issues. Has anyone ever seen this? Or have any idea how I can get compiz-code out of my package database. I know the problems I'm encountering aren't high priority, but not having workspaces gets annoying and I have no clue what else is broken with my 'half-broken' compiz.
Fedora :: KDE Crashing After Desktop Effects?
Oct 2, 2009fter I enable the desktop effects on KDE, everytime that I login in to a session,KDE crash.... Im just gettin a black screen.My question is. Can I turn off the desktop effects by editing a file? if so, which file do I need to edit.... and where is the extensive directory tree i can find a the file that holds information about kde crashing "error file or log file" were I can get more info in what is happening with KDE and find out why is crashing.

Aug 17, 2010I've just recently come back to Fedora from OpenSuSE, where all of my compositing worked beautifully before my hard disk took a big dump. Now that I have Fedora 13 installed, I've gone through the ridiculous hassle of eliminating nouveau so that my NVIDIA drivers can do all the work. Everything seems fine except that some of the animations of desktop effects are very slow and choppy. For example, the minimize window animation looks great, but upon un-minimizing, the animation gets choppy and slow. Same with the slide animation for the dialogue windows. Transitions of the desktop cube work just fine. Show windows animation works good on zoom out, but zooming back in is slow and choppy.
I'm quite puzzled here. Originally I used the NVIDIA driver from rpmfusion. I've had troubles before (with OpenSuSE) with the version in the repos, so I tried installing the latest version from the NVIDIA website. No changes though.

Fedora :: Desktop Effects Turned Off?
Nov 20, 2010After I updated to KDE 4.5.3 in Fedora 13 I've had 2 things stop starting up when I boot up. They were working fine before the KDE update.
The first is desktop effects. I turn it on, but once I reboot then desktop effects are disabled again. When I turn them on I get a KWin message that it has been turned off by another application. How can I find out which application that is and why?
The second is Yakuake, which I want to start automatically when I boot up. I don't see where I can set it up to start automatically (and I don't remember how I did it before, or if it was automatic when I installed it).
UPDATE: I just found the autostart configuration and added Yakuake. It worked, now it runs whenever I start.

Now I get the garbled screen every time I enable it on gnome.Google search said to disable the metacity composite manager using gconf-editor but I'm not sure I know how to do it. Jan 2, 2010When trying to set up desktop effects with Compiz I get this message: Accelerated 3D graphics is not available Desktop effects require hardware 3D support.
I have used Fedora 10 last year and the 3D effects worked fine. I have a Nvidia Geforce 6100 video. I also have another hdd on the PC with Mandriva 2010 which I use and the 3D compiz effects work fine. I'm running Omega 12. Isn't it Fedora 12 w/ codecs added? isn't video detection the same?

Jul 21, 2010Has anyone in here had the luck to enable desktop effects with GeForce 7300 sametime installing the proper geforce 7300 drivers on a twinheaded monitors? Twinheaded meaning im on a dual head monitors.Can't seem to have desktop effects working. I was able to install the nvidia drivers vi installing the rpmfusion repo's and installing kmod-nvidia-PAE.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686. Rebooted and it worked, Now when i try System>Prefs>Desktop Effects i get "Accelerated 3D graphics is not available. Desktop effects require hardware 3D support".
